Chapter 10 - Seeking Shelter in a Dilapidated Temple

"Hello, I'm a passerby who is in search of some people I know. I hope to seek shelter here for a night to avoid the cold winds.

Qin Yiling tightened her grip on her suitcase slightly and was immediately on her guard.

In the darkness, the three tall men were immediately relieved to hear that it was a woman's voice. They were almost scared to death but thankfully it wasn't any bandits or robbers.

"Come in quickly."

Hearing that, Qin Yiling walked forward with her suitcase. As soon as she had both feet through the doorway, she instantly felt countless eyes on her.

She even heard the sound of someone gasping, seemingly astonished?

Why? Was her appearance too eye-catching? Or did she look too strange?

That couldn't be it. She was so sweet and lovely, a solid killer beauty–ever since she was young, people seemed to like her easily no matter where she went. In her grandmother's words, she looked lovable, obedient, pleasant, and harmless. Wherever she went, people always had the impression that she was simply like a good-natured little lamb.

But in reality, what kind of person was she? Everyone in the Qin family could only shrug speechlessly!

Qin Yiling smiled sweetly and greeted everyone in the room.

"Hello everyone, sorry to intrude."

In between greetings, she also noted the situation inside the house.

It turned out that this was a derelict temple of the village god and it had probably been in ruins for a long time. No wonder, since it was built in this desolate place.

There were about ten people or so sitting in the room. There were men, women, young and old. Groups of two to three people occupied a spot each.

After a brief scope, it seemed that among these people, only the three men who had appeared at the entrance looked capable of attacking . The rest of them looked frail, weak and clearly like simple farmers.

These people looked similar to the woman she had seen in the grass–sallow and emaciated, and dressed in shabby clothes. Everyone looked to be in a state of utter exhaustion, as if they had been busy traveling for a long time. She could even see traces of wariness, astonishment, and envy in their eyes.

Upon her observations, she immediately understood why everyone had been looking at her with such fervent gazes.

Everyone was disheveled and dirty, yet she looked fresh and clean.

Everyone wore tattered clothes, yet she looked neat and presentable.

Everyone looked thin and sallow, yet she looked to be in the pink of health.

Despite her efforts to dress plainly and keep a low profile, when compared to them, she still stuck out like a sore thumb.

Once again, Qin Yiling lamented to herself: "Just what kind of world is this?"

After exchanging greetings, she did not have the mood to chit-chat with them, so she chose a small corner far from the others to settle into. After all, this run-down temple was not private property and was open to anyone for temporary use. Surely, there was no need for her to seek their permission, right?

Everything of use in the temple had already been taken up by the others, so upon seeing all the dust on the floor, Qin Yiling could only lay a handkerchief down and sit on it.

After having walked for more than an hour, and even digging a pit to bury a person, she was indeed a little tired. She wasn't picky about her resting place; it was fine as long as it provided protection from the cold winds and something to lean on behind her.

She had wanted to lay a piece of clothing on the ground as a makeshift bed, but when she recalled the way everyone had been looking at her, she immediately dismissed that idea.

She had better not invite resentment and hostility.
