Chapter 13 - The Preparation

The boys had taken off keen to attempt the rescue, but Zero had other ideas and told the boys to slow down and plan this out.

"Christopher shouldn't be in any danger, we need to plan rescue out and you will need some equipment that is suited for infiltration and rescue" Zero communicated via their mind link. "you will also need some way to communicate with him as it's unlikely he is like his mother."

After they had calmed down and forced themselves to slow down, the boys entered their usual mediation pose. They needed to gain some inspiration from the voice of the universe if they were to complete their current ideas.

Lisa was curious, she had been informed by Zero that they need to design some new technology before attempting the rescue, but didn't know why they were meditating. "what are they doing? shouldn't they be researching or something?"

"They are researching in their own way, it's one of their advantages but I can't say much else." Zero wasn't sure what to do with Lisa. He was not supposed to interact with humans and was currently in breach of his orders.

The Watcher just couldn't say no when Infy asked if she could return with them. Infy idea's had merit but there was no way he could explain this current situation if he got caught.

The twin's current ideas took inspiration from the animal kingdom. Active camouflage for their suit and ship using a similar system to an octopus. They designed climbing gloves and boots that used millions of retractable claws, similar to gecko feet.

They also copied moths eyes to create a non-reflective invisibly shield that used curved glass to hide objects behind them. They would need this to hide Christopher once he was rescued.

The new infiltration suit also had the exoskeleton removed and more nanogel added to increase its acoustic damping. They also integrated an advanced communication and hacking suite into the suit but that was designed by Zero.

These ideas were good in theory but they had struggled with the real-world physics and engineering of the new suits. Lisa had also become involved in the effort to refine the suit. She rapidly assimilated the knowledge thanks to her well-rounded experience when it came to science. The boys had explained some of the more nuanced physics to her and she was able to solve many of the problems.

The Aethon wasn't going to be useful for this particular mission. Not only did they know what it looked like it. It also wasn't capable of carrying more than 1 person. For this mission, the twins would develop a new ship The Eous. It had to be stealthy, quick and able to carry multiple passengers.

The FCAD would not be a good engine for this ship as the heat generated would be able to be detected. They had opted to use a nano-particle field emitter thruster. In simplistic terms, this engine would use an electrically conductive fuel which when charged with electricity could be expelled to create thrust. Using the voice of the universe they had discovered some interesting proprieties of electrical fields that they could use to create a more efficient fuel. This had decreased the overall maximum speed of the ship but increase its stealth capabilities.

The Eous shape also took inspiration from the animal kingdom as it was shaped similar to a squid, each tentacle would be home to a merge pod and with the pilot merge pod in the centre, it allowed for the ship to carry 9 people. Each of the tentacles could be released from the main body and act as escape pods if the need arises.

This design feature made the passengers vulnerable to external attack and made it so the ship relied heavily on its stealth operations to get in and out undetected.

With the designs finalised it was time to build them. The twins had requested from zero if they could use the materialiser just this once. Surprisingly they were allowed, so after 3 days of planning and 3 days of testing. They were finally ready to rescue Lisa's son. This time the boys had to take a longer path to mars and the new ship was only capable of doing 0.10c (the speed of light) so the trip would take a further 4 days.

Lisa wanted to come, she had to do something to rescue her son. Even if it wasn't her fault she was still responsible for his wellbeing. The boys had tried to talk her out of it but she was being quite insistent. Eventually, Zero had step in and convinced her even if she went she would be stuck in a merge pod for the whole trip.

Zero offered up a solution, she could monitor the situation in real-time from their current location using a version of the holographic communication system. That way she could offer the boys advice and help solve any problems that would arise. Lisa reluctantly agreed to the idea.
