Thunder grumbled over in the east. A breeze, the first he'd felt since the start of this tumultuous week, stirred some debris in the road where about an hour ago, protesters filled. 

After a strategy meeting with the police chief, his team, and a few elected officers, Albert had joined Kyla on the sidewalk outside the morgue. He found himself sharing a bottle of chardonnay with her, which was wedged between his hip and hers, as each person focused on their thoughts.

His life, he decided as he took another long swallow, had certainly taken some interesting twists and turns over the last few days. First, the wolf attack, then the knife in a coffin, next the missing bodies and now topping the list was his near accident.
