Chapter 2 - I HAVE A SYSTEM?! BUT I HAVE TO CHARGE MY PHONE!

The image of my girlfriend jumping from the truck and getting pulled by the soldiers was the last sight I remembered. Since a zombie bit me earlier, I had no other choice but to sacrifice myself for the better good.

And when my girlfriend turned around, I went to the opposite side. I seized the chance and bashed the metallic bar against this mob of undead. If it were not for me, my partner would not have made it to the rescue truck.

She kept shouting my name, but I already resigned my life from these zombies. I let my body get gnawed and tore apart, feeding myself to these flesh-eaters.

"I told you not to look back, babe….," I mumbled, before diving at the horde of zombies.

My girlfriend wanted to leap from the truck and rescue me. She kept pleading with the soldiers and doctors about saving my life. However, when those people noticed the bite marks covering my skin, they averted their gaze and continued driving the road.

The military trucks left me behind, knowing that I would transform into one of them or become food for the zombies. They did not even bother killing off the zombies, as they used me as a decoy to save themselves. But those armed people took out the undead, blocking their view since they needed to race forward.

But instead of venting my anger at the rescuers, I curved up a smile and watched them leave the place. The only thing that mattered to me the most was my girlfriend's safety. I did not care if those soldiers did not plan on saving my dying body.

As long as the rescuers could give a safer place for my girlfriend to live, everything should be okay…...

Those infected cannibals first took away my arms and legs with brute force. My muscles gushed upwards, with blood drenching the entire vicinity. But the zombies celebrated my body and continued devouring it like a thanksgiving turkey offered in the shelter.

After amputating my limbs, they went for my neck and took away my life. My heart finally stopped beating, with my brain screaming at me to rest. But despite my nonfunctional organs, I remained awake inside my head.

"Is this what they call remembering the life I had after dying?" I croaked, and gave up resisting my inevitable death.

The image of my girlfriend sitting on my lap became the most honourable memory inside my head. There were tons of funny experiences I could have remembered, but…. the intercourse part…. it would have been magical.

But, no. These zombies took away my chance as I remained untouched for the rest of my life. And now that I died from the hands of these bastards, I lost my opportunity! I wanted to get laid, but now I died!

However, my life did not end right there. I did not know if it was a curse or a blessing. But my body came back alive, with all my knowledge attached inside my head.

My fingers twitched as they touched the cold ground, with my legs shaking as if it had a seizure. Countless cracking sounds echoed from my body as I tried feeling and stretching my arms. It was as if I became a stiff puppet that did not have the freedom to move at all.

I finally opened my eyes and witnessed the world around me. The place remained the same as I had not moved at all.

As I glanced at my side, corpses of zombies welcomed my eyes. Each of them had broken skulls, which came from my bashing attacks. And when I turned behind, a mountain of dead bodies addressed me, with their heads or chest pierced with bullet holes.

"Those zombies were the ones blocking the military trucks…." I murmured, while tilting my head. My head made a snapping sound, but I assumed it was just my bones cracking.

There was nobody here besides the double dead zombies and me. It was as if the horde I fought before was just a fragment of my imagination.

However, all of those doubts proved me wrong when an illuminating object caught my eye. When I reached my hand for the glowing article, I jerked backwards from fright. I couldn't believe my eyes, that my arms morphed into something else.

It was not something a normal human being should have…. And when I tried checking for it again, it was the same necrotic limb that the zombies had.

"What the fuck?!" I exclaimed, while hurriedly shaking off those green mucus-secreting from my hand.

But no matter how hard I jiggled my hands, the blackened spots and infectious liquid never came off my arm.

It was not just my arms who had these problems. The lower part of my body, chest, and everything had the same conditions as my arms. And when I tried pinching myself from the unscratched skin, no pain got sent from my nerves. It was as if someone forcefully placed anaesthesia inside my body, which made me numb from feeling anything at all.

I did not know if I was already dead or became a zombie, just like the carcasses surrounding me. And if there was a possibility that I became a living infected, why would I still have my memories intact inside my brain?

Scientifically, if the zombies ate my organs, I would not function properly. And if those undead beings ripped my neck apart and crushed my spine, I would not have been standing on this ground right now.

However, no one dared to answer my question, since most people had already evacuated from this city. But for now, I needed to find something and learn about my situation.

If I could still think and function as a normal being, those doctors could work on a cure based on me. All I had to do was to find a person and explain my circumstances.

As I turned around, I picked the illuminating object on the ground and studied it. Much to my surprise, it was my cellular phone I had when all this shit happened. I opened my gadget and found a new text message sent from my girlfriend.

"Thank god! Are you safe?!" I cried, while sliding the phone open.

I encountered a slight difficulty managing the touch screen. Since I had flabby arms that belonged to a zombie, my strength was incomparable to my human muscles. Because my cells continued dying at each passing second, I could not control the nerves inside my body.

I would get the hang of it, eventually. But right now, that was not my utmost priority.

[Babe, I hope you're alright…. you promised to be with me, okay? I will wait for you here… The military truck is going somewhere around….]

Just before I finished reading the text message, the screen blacked out while it revealed the phone's brand. My gadget died because of its insufficient battery, which came biting back at me.

"DAMN IT!" I screamed, but my hoarse voice did not to let me.

Since the zombies had ruptured my vocal cords, saying anything became nearly impossible for me.

But that did not matter right now. I needed to go to the city and charge my phone for an outlet. I glanced at the city with monumental smoke coming from different places. The zooming cars I recognized before stopped moving, hinting that the people failed to escape the city. There were also tiny figures walking around the roads. But because of my zombie sense, my eyes did not magnify those darkened shapes.

I went inside my car again and grabbed the charger resting on its surface. It belonged to my girlfriend, which became a sentimental value for me to keep with me. It was the only thing I had to remember inside my head.

Wasting no more time, I finally trod the empty road towards the city. I couldn't start the engine of my wheels since the zombies already damaged it. They destroyed the engine, which made the gas leak out from the automobile. There was nothing I could do but to walk around a few miles to arrive in Tokyo, Japan.

Being a zombie both had its perks and disadvantages. I did not need to breathe or feel exhausted to need a break. Every time I dragged my feet forward, my muscles would just heed my instructions. And even though I stomped my feet using my entire force, my nerves never complained about it.

As soon as I reached half the distance from the city, a group of zombies welcomed my sight. Three of them devoured the already dead human resting on the ground. When the undead's eyes met with mine, they all glared in my direction.

My mouth let out a watery sensation, with my mind filled with indecent thoughts of cannibalism. If my stomach could only growl for food, it would have probably done so. These thoughts clouded inside my head, forcing me to think like a zombie and not a human.

I waved my hand and tried communicating with the zombies. Since my memories remained intact inside my head, I could only guess that the same condition would apply to other undead beings.

However, that thought proved me wrong.

"Hi! Do you know any working car I could borrow?" I asked, while slowly walking towards the zombies. "Even a motorcycle would do! I would even take a skateboard if you found one!"

"Grargh."

Those were the words that fled outside the monsters eating their fill. Instead of greeting me with the same enthusiasm, the three zombies got up from the human and headed towards me. All of them had narrowed eyes and crunching teeth, ready to attack me if necessary.

"Oh, shit! They must have thought I was coming for their food!" I screamed, and took a step back from the scene. "Sorry, fellas! I am not here to take your food! I eat meat and fish, not humans!"

Despite my remarks, the zombies continued marching towards me. Since it had come to this, I changed course and ran forward, at the zombies' side. I did not want to return to where I (technically) died, since it would lead me further away from the city.

If there was one thing I needed to do first, it was getting a functional outlet and charge my phone. But just when I reached near the city streets, a box screen occluded my vision.
