Chapter 1 - The hunter who wanted to change

(Author's Note: Volume 0 is an optional volume which will bring you more information about the universe)

150 years ago a meteor descended upon this world, transforming and destroying continents around it.

However, due to the technological advancements, humans achieved, they manage to damage the meteor enough to not destroy the planet.

But 50 years later, the meteor started emitting a strange light opening a portal to another world.

However, it seems the other side expected this and made immediate contact with the residents of this world.

After a long discussion with the leaders of both worlds, it was discovered that they were partly responsible for the meteor appearing in their home.

Negotiations broke down and the war was declared upon them.

Currently, the people of this land called it 'The Meteor's Invasion', and not long after the war started, the other world residents was found out to be using something like 'Magic'

And soon became an endurance war, this land's residents had technology far greater than them giving them an advantage when it comes to war however the otherworld had far more residents in it, many of them not even of the same race.

Both sides were terribly exhausted, for the people of this land, their natural resources were dwindling and it started affecting its people and surroundings and for the other world's residents, half of the total population were already killed in battle.

So both sides made a peace treaty, in return for the war to stop, the land of this world must be taught 'Magic' and the other worlds must be taught about their technology.

Although everything was not shared, including weapons of war, both world's scholars manage to discover everything else with time.

For humans, their magic was divided into two categories, 'Economic' and 'War' magic.

Economic magic was magic that cannot harm humans such as healing and transmutation.

Healing magic heals any wound based on how much mana was invested in it.

And Transmutation magic, a magic that not only helped the revitalization of the economy but also improved the surroundings of the world, turned anything that had 'Value' however you needed a great amount of knowledge about every single element of an item to transmute it into another item which you also needed to know their elements about down to its atoms.

'War' was the opposite, it can be used to harm any living being such as humans and mana beasts using fire or ice magic.

And due to the mana beasts' existence, other than jobs that specialize in one type of magic, hunters were a new job created specifically for hunting mana beasts, and 'The Guild' was founded to support them.

The Guild was an organization needed for the current economy to survive.

The hunters will extract the monster's soul then their soul will be turned into numerical values by the transmutators which will then be turned into various resources.

And one of those hunters is also our protagonist, Hugo Auclair.

JUNE 24. 3567

I wake up after 7:00 AM and left my home early to visit my grandfather at the hospital and as always, doted on every single thing about me however today was different, he talking more about my job as a hunter.

I assume he wanted to talk to me more about my job since both of us were also hunters and our job was the only thing we had common however I was wrong

"Hugo, what do you wish to do from now on?"

"What?"

"Your dreams or objectives in life"

"I..."

"As I thought, you haven't thought about it"

"Tell me Hugo why do you still work as a hunter when you're not doing it for the thrill or to improve your swordsmanship.

"..."

"Although you were interested in the art of the blade, as you grew up, I noticed that you were slowly losing purpose"

"So tell me why are you still doing this?"

"....Although I loved being a hunter at first but I saw no purpose meeting stronger opponents and dying in the process"

"I wanted to experience so many more things but it will come with a risk of me dying and I was not ready to face such a thing"

"Then risk it you dumbass"

"Weren't you the one doting on my well being and here you are tel-"

"Then which would you rather, someone who lived long but was stuck on a repetitive loop or someone who lived short but managed to experience everything from happiness, sadness, and fear"

"Hugo, You know I'm going to die sooner or later and you'll be alone after that, your family never supported you with such ambition meaning you have no one to go to, so as my last wish, please find purpose in your life"

"If you cannot find any purpose in here then go to the other side"

"This is!"

A rectangular card full of writing was given to me.

"Yes, it's the permit to go to the other world, become a wanderer and find purpose in that world"

"I'll...think about it"

"Don't think about it Hugo, Do it while you're still young"

"Remember Hugo, you can never learn the true value of life until you can no longer return from it..."

*beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep*

On JUNE 24. 3567 Hugo's grandfather passed peacefully.

While I was standing there looking at his body, I couldn't help but think about his words carefully

'Remember Hugo, you can never learn the true value of life until you can no longer return from it'

At the midnight I wore the usual clothes that I used to hunt and made my way to the meteor site or as we call it 'Portal to the other side

As I get closer to the portal, the guards which guard the area spot me and ask if I have a permit and gave the one my grandfather gave me.

He was shocked to find that I had one on me and called his superiors to inspect it personally and was shocked to find that it was real.

After letting me passed he called out

"Hey kid, be careful in there, there is more mana concentrated on that world meaning the mana beast is far stronger"

"I know but that's why going"

And I started walking again and went into the portal.

"Hey boss, are you sure we should have let him go there?"

"Just from a glance, you can tell that he's a warrior who has lost purpose in life but resolved himself to change that fact"

"Only fate can decide whether he can do it or die trying"
