I jolted upright, or I would have if I wasn't chained down. I looked around me. Above, damp bricks shining in the moonlight coming through the single small window, which was barred. I was lying on a damp, hard stone "bed"(it was just a stone slat slightly above the floor.)
"So, you're finally awake."
I looked in the direction of the voice. The door to my cell had opened, and a guard was inside.
"So you're the one who killed the general."
"W-what? No! I swear, I didn't do i-"
"Then why were you next to the body?"
What body? What's he talking about? And then I remembered. 'Life Drain'. The words Prometheus said while in my body. Is that what it did?
"Talk. How did you do it? There were no marks on the body, and there was no drink to poison."
Because I didn't know what to say, I kept my mouth shut. Then, I said,
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
The soldier began to undo my chains.
"I suppose it doesn't matter. Sorenacles, by the order of Pericles, you are to be executed at noon tomorrow."
He placed some stale bread and two cups of water on the floor.
"If you would rather die now, I poisoned the left cup. It's your choice."
He left and locked the door. Tomorrow came, and I didn't drink the poison. Noon was fast approaching, and I was dreading every one of my last moments. The door opened, and another soldier walked in.
"Sorenacles of Athens, Pericles has come to the decision that you shall be questioned in a sort of trial. There, your fate shall be decided."
I breathed a sigh of relief, but my survival was not guaranteed yet.
Having no choice left, I decided to try one of the powers bestowed upon me.
"Guiding flame!"
I looked around the room. One of the bricks was emanating a red glow. I decided to investigate it. It was loose. I pulled the brick free from the wall, and a few more bricks fell. I removed these bricks and peered out. I was free! I had escaped!
No. It can't be that easy, they would take measures to prevent an escape like this. I looked down. A sheer drop.
