I looked down. A sheer drop.
I looked left, then right. Below me were sharp rocks jutting out of the ocean, I had no chance of making it to a safe landing. To my left, a flat wall. It had some foot holds, but they stopped after a few meters. To my right, no foot holds at all. Up. That's were I looked next. There was a thin strip of bricks jutting out. I had surveyed enough to know this was an isolated prison, using a cliff to deter escape attempts, but they wanted it to look somewhat nice from the outside. Fools. I could use the ledge to shimmy across and make it away from the cliff and to the land. One wrong move would mean certain death, but I doubt I'll be judged mercifully, so it was either certain death, or a chance at survival. The choice was clear.
I decided to use it to head left. I could use the foot holds to get used to holding onto the ledge. And so, I started to make my way across. I had made it around a meter across before my hand first slipped.
"SHIT!" I shouted. Thankfully, I was able to hold on with just one hand. I put my other hand back on and continued across. Once I made it to where the foot holds stopped, I did something I never should've done. I looked down. My fear took over and I froze up. My hands started sweating profusely, and I could feel my hands start to slip. I couldn't stop now. I would have to keep going otherwise my hands would slip, and I would fall. Surely someone would've noticed I'm gone by now.Hopefully they think I decided to throw myself off the cliff, which would give me a head start as a fugitive. If they don't think that and I turned back, well, it wouldn't be pretty.
I had nearly made it round. Then, a crow landed on the ledge. It began to edge towards my fingers.
"Shoo!" I shouted. It edged closer. Then, it started to peck my fingers.
"GAAAHHH!" I screamed in pain. My agony seemed to startle it, and it flew off. Then I realised the blood and sweat were causing my hands to slip a lot. I was less than two meters away from making it to land. Then I slipped and fell.
