Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 - Rare Find

The plastic bag swished around my legs while I walked home, finally concluding that taking a taxi wasn't worth the money at all. New York was well lit (in certain parts) but I wouldn't have recommended anyone else to do this. It was a stupid thing to do and-

Suddenly, a huge bolt of lightning surged from the sky, crashing against who-knows-what a block ahead of me. Wow, that was so sudden... and it isn't even raining. This isn't right, the air is so humid so lightning without rain would be almost impossible to achieve.

Who am I to judge the Earth's decision to show its anger? I'm just going to keep on walking until I reach my apartment. That was a sight to behold, it happened to fast as well! As I walked around to the next block, I saw a bunch of people gathering around what looked like a fried light post. It had been completely destroyed, the red heated metal bending like spaghetti in warm water.

Why did this have to happen right around the corner to my apartment? Now, every New Yorker will be passing by to witness this phenomenon like it was some sort of prophecy.

People, as attention-hungry as they were, were immediately taking photos all the while I noticed something on the ground. Was that... blood? I followed the trail into an alleyway and suddenly, I clutched my chest in fear. What if someone got struck by that lightning?

"Hello?" I called out into the alleyway, and then heard the shift of a tin can on the floor. I walked inside, cautiously treading amongst the overflowing trash. Then, I saw it.

A beautiful beast of an animal, panting desperately while being surrounded with blood. The red liquid had created a trail of breadcrumbs for me to find this majestic creature and suddenly, I realised what had happened. He was what got struck with lightning.

I rushed over, kneeling down, wondering if the poor animal was dead. However, all I saw was a stab wound to the abdomen. This poor creature... it needs help and fast! The humid air around me made my nose itch and while I was desperate to help this animal, I knew that there was only one solution.

Any vet in New York would be closed. I'd know, since I took a volunteer job there as a 'way to prove my character' just after I was kicked out of care. I also was taught how to suture up wounds like this. You'd be surprised how many abused animals we got in by the daily.

I looked around and discovered a small, wooden cart which was full of cardboard boxes just laying there, waiting to be used. Emptying its contents, I eventually picked up the huge dog and popped the animal inside of it. Grabbing the handle, I rolled out, running desperately towards my apartment.

In my building, animals aren't allowed, but I know that Francine, my landlady, will be watching her 6 o'clock show right now, so I'll be able to sneak in no problem.

It was so hard to pull the wagon, especially in the snow, but I persevered and was determined to get this animal in a clean environment. This poor animal has been abandoned and abused. Perhaps most people would have walked away. I would have normally walked away, yet... somehow, I resonated with this dog.

I was abandoned and hurt, emotionally instead of physically. Perhaps I want to save this animal because no one was there to save me.
