The next week sped by in a blur of dead sleep and chatting with the UA teachers.
All Might, Midnight, Aizawa and Mr. Principle visited you every day, you were slowly beginning to get to know each of them. All Might would sometimes pop in two or even three times a day to check in on you.
Most times when you were awake you didn't see Shiro or Gray, they were working hard on their physical therapy. They didn't have your enhanced healing ability that had you eating up the hospital's cafeteria.
Doctor Shuzenji placed you on strict bed rest while you healed from the multiple injuries which littered your skin. You laid against the stiff pillow; your eyes closed as you relaxed alone inside your hospital room. It had been years since you got the luxury of a bed to sleep in.
"I can't believe those two turned down the offer!" A nurse gossiped walking into your room, you decided to remain appearing asleep. It made their jobs easier, plus you didn't have the energy to spark up conversation just yet today.
"I know!" Another gasped looking at the monitor which held your vitals.
"If I got that kind of offer, I would be all over it!" One nurse laughed, "To turn down offers from UA High School!? Insane!"
"I can't blame the two guys-" The other one said, "-they lived through hell, why on earth would they want to jump into hero work?"
"But still-!" The other scoffed, "-they turned down acceptance into the entire school, at least get yourself a free education!"
"I don't know." The nurse shrugged, "I understand their point of view."
"I don't-" The two nurses said leaving the room, "-they are getting ready to leave, without even saying anything to their friend-"
Your eyes snapped open as you sat up, turning to the two empty beds. Shiro and Gray were...leaving...now!?
Pain erupted in your torso, legs and arms as you pride yourself off the bed, the cold floor stung you through the hospital socks. You sucked in a deep breath trying to steady your pounding heart, scrambling out of the room you had no idea where to go.
You assumed the front of the entrance, and those were the signs you followed. Staff members turned and stared with confusion leaking onto their faces seeing you wandering around the halls.
You found the front doors quickly.
"M-Miss-!?" A security guard stood from his desk, you pushed open the glass door, the pressure stung your arms but you bit through the pain.
The warm air blew over your face, you froze for a moment feeling the fresh air and bright sun rays gracing your skin. Your baggy white hospital top and pants blew with the wind as you moved forward, the guard still calling your name quickly talking on his walkie talkie, not having a clue what to do.
"Shiro-!" You called to see your two friends, dressed in clean street clothes, loading into a black car. "-Gray!"
The two boys turned spotting you limp in your yellow hospital socks towards them.
"Hey kid-" Shiro called, closing the trunk of the car. "-good to see you up and about."
"What the hell!?" You said, punching him in the arm as hard as you possibly could.
"Ow-" Shiro rubbed his arm, "-that almost hurt!"
"Where are you two going!?" You snapped, "Why weren't you going to tell me!?"
"Uh-" Gray turned to Shiro, "-well...uh...there's not an easy way to say this." Shiro breathed.
"They found family." Gray stepped in seeing Shiro's hesitation.
"Family?"
"The police looked into my family tree-" Shiro muttered, kicking a nearby rock. "-my aunt is still alive, I spoke to her on the phone yesterday and she about broke into tears finding out I was still alive."
"Wha-" You gasped, "-that's amazing!"
"Yeah." Shiro laughed lightly, rubbing the back of his neck. "She wants me to come stay with her while I finish my recovery. There is a hospital close by that will accept me as a patient so I can continue therapy..."
"I am so happy for you!" You walked into his arm, hugging him.
"That Naomasa is something else-" Gray laughed, "-he found my elder brother who turns out survived the attack on my family!"
"S-Seriously!?" You jumped feeling excitement ignite through you. "He survived!?"
"Yeah!" Gray's eyes lit up, "He demanded I come and live with him, he has a wife now and she can't wait to meet me."
"I can't believe this." You smiled, thrilled for your friends, "But why weren't you going to tell me?"
"We uh..." The two boys glanced at each other, "...we know you don't have any family-"
"I have you guys." You waved to them.
"-of course! It's just..."
"We don't want you to come with either of us." Gray bluntly cut around the bush, your face dropped as your heart sank.
"Wh-"
"Don't-!" Gray snapped seeing the pain in your face, "-of course we love you, how could we not? Our lives have forever been entangled together, and I want to see you I just...I wanna recover and not constantly see a reminder of Shadow Jack around every corner."
"I remind you of-"
"You and Shiro." Gray corrected, "I just need time to breathe and figure out what I want to do with my life. I want to spend time with family and be normal for a bit, you know? Try and recover from our damaged pasts."
"Yeah-" You nodded, refusing to make eye contact with either of them. "-you want to be with only family while you recover and not have a walking reminder of the horror we were dragged through our entire lives. I get it." You said, tingling sensations burned the bottom of your heart as you turned your head walking away.
"(y/n)-" Shiro stepped forward, "-it's not like we don't look at you as family it's just-"
"Good luck guys." You called, "I hope you find what you're looking for."
"(y/n)!"
You fought back the sensation from behind your eyes, you haven't cried in years you weren't about to start now.
Shiro and Gray were gone now, you were all alone.
No family to lean on while your wounds healed creating scars that would forever stain your skin. No place to turn to call home...you felt exposed and all the cracks in your heart stung from the feeling of rejection by the only two people you thought you had in your life.
You looked up from the sidewalk, your body was tired and wanted to sleep. You stopped dead in your tracks seeing the UA teacher's standing yards away from you, their emotions clearly written on their faces: pity.
You swallowed the lump of emotion in your throat as you walked over to them.
"(y/n)-" Midnight went to say,
"What are you guys doing here?" You wondered, it was a weekday, which meant they should be at school.
"Why don't we head back to your room?" Mr. Principle suggested, "Breakfast should be served soon."
You nodded, slowly following the UA teachers.
You glanced over your shoulder seeing the black car was long gone.
Shiro and Gray were on their own paths now, a path that didn't include each other. For so long it had always been you three, when one couldn't go on the others always used their strength to pull you all to the finish line, how could they turn their backs so easily on your bond?
Once back inside your hospital room and in your bed with your breakfast tray before you, the teachers decided to speak.
"So-" All Might cleared his throat, "-we know you must be feeling a lot of-"
"Did you know?" You quickly wondered.
"Yes." Mr. Principle said, "We knew Gray and Shiro were leaving today, but we truly thought they were going to speak with you. That is why we delayed in coming here, so the three of you could have time for your goodbyes."
"I know it seems like your friends just turned their back on you-" Aizawa said, "-but those two are just as lost as you are. Now I don't know why they thought going separate ways was the right idea. Maybe they wanted to see if they could grow as people on their own without the other two. Becoming your own person is a journey you must take alone."
"Yes." Mr. Principle agreed, "But sadly (y/n) we need an answer now."
"Answer?" You turned from your scrambled eggs and bacon.
"I know this is the worst time we could possibly put this pressure on you, but the school board has demanded to know what your decision is-" Mr. Principle explained. "-will you join UA's Hero Course, Class 1-A?"
