Chapter 33 - Poison

After the others left the house, Lucette stayed inside her room till the next morning. She didn't want to take a step outside the door.

Opening her eyes, she wanted to check on the alpha. The doctor said that his condition was stable last night.

Lucette sighed. She couldn't imagine the outcome of what she did. If he woke up and wanted to punish her… Lucette shivered at the thought.

She wished the alpha would forget what happened yesterday.

Walking to the opposite room, and standing outside. Her chest thumped in her chest. Lucette unlocked the door and peeked. The alpha slept in his bed. His chest went up and down. 'He is breathing.' She calmed herself because he didn't die.

She tiptoed to the bed. When he closed his eyes, he seemed nothing close to the scary and angry man she knew.

Turning to leave, a hand garbed hers.

"Why are you here?" he asked, and she met his gloomy face.

"I came to check on you?" she answered. As if he didn't believe her, he tightened his grip on her hand. She hissed in pain. "Let go." her hand was going to break.

"What did you do to me?" he asked.

Lucette tried to free her hand, but he didn't let go. "I did nothing. We were fighting and then I just bit your n—" She didn't dare to continue. "It's the first time I did something like that. I don't know why you passed out," Lucette explained.

"You don't know?" he said with eyes filled with mockery, and then he freed her.

Lucette took two steps backwards. "I am telling the truth. When thirst took over vampires—" she tried to explain.

"OUT," he shouted, and she jumped from fright.

Lucette stared at the man and then hurried out. She was at fault for thinking about his safety while he did nothing but shout at her.

'Rude man! How can he treat me like that?' She rubbed her hand.

Back to the opposite room.

Orson stood up, rubbing his sore neck. Thinking about last night, he frowned.

'A daring vampire!'

Orson mind-linked the pack's healer to come and meet him. He walked to the living room.

"Good morning Alpha, how are you feeling?" he asked.

"Frustrated," Orson said, twitching his lips and the healer chuckled.

"What's the result Jack?" he asked, leaning on the couch.

"Poison of course," he replied, taking a seat opposite him. "I could do nothing with my healing ability. It is good that your body was strong enough to fight it with the help of the new antidote. The symptoms lessened, but you need to be under observation these days."

Orson frowned. Jack had healing traits that overcame everyone else so being unable to handle his situation meant one thing. The poison was far above the norm.

If not for him being an alpha and his healing process was higher, he would have died at the hands of that vampire.

Jack said, snapping him out of his thoughts, "I took a sample of your blood to the lab to examine it. The result came out—"

Orson shifted his gaze to Jack. "Continue," he said.

"The strange substance in your blood had the same effect as a wolfbane but I am sure its result was beyond a mere wolfbane. The researchers need more tests to confirm its effects," he said.

Thinking about that vampire, anger rose in his chest. If she was the one poisoning him, then when did she do that?

He fainted after she bit his neck! He still felt the tightness in his chest and his inability to breathe. His neck stung as a reminder.

Orson touched his neck, and then he cursed, "F***"

He should punish her later.

"Anything else?" Orson said, noticing that Jack was still sitting there.

Jack coughed. "Besides the wolfbanes, there are other toxins. It's wonderful how this poison is complicated. Alpha, tell me exactly what did you encounter before you fainted last night," he said.

Meanwhile, Jack didn't believe the new Luna's word because of the attack. She evaded looking at Jordan's eyes, telling the story. Besides, He found no wounds on the alpha's body except a little redness in his neck.

"Alpha, Did she..." Jack said, and he glared at him.

Orson signed and explained to him what happened last night.

"Our great alpha lost a duel with a tiny vampiress and got bit," Jack said, chuckling.

Orson's face turned ashen. The mere thought of what happened to him made him feel an intense rage, so hearing the mocking from the healer enraged him more.

Jack fixed his posture and returned to his seriousness. "I understand why the poison has weak concentration. I think the poison was transmitted to you with the bite."

"How is that possible?" Orson asked.

"It is, but we should ask to know," Jack said.

The doorbell rang. "The beta has come to check," Jack said, stood up and went to open the door.

Orson stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window facing the backyard. 'Everything got mixed up since she came here.'

"Alpha," Jordan's voice made him out of his trance. "Are you okay?" he asked.

Orson looked at him and nodded. "Did my news spread?" Orson asked.

"No," Jordan answered.

"Alpha, can you tell us who did it?" Jordan said, looking at him with anticipation. "The Luna told us she found you unconscious."

What a lame excuse! If what Jack said was true, then she would poison him.

Orson looked down and said, "I will take care of the matter."

He still needed to talk to her, and then decide what he would do.

Jordan frowned. "Alpha, your safety is our priority. We need to know, to prepare ourselves and know what we are facing."

"I know what I am doing," Orson said.

"But—"

"Jordan, don't worry. Everything is under our alpha's control. No one beside him can solve the matter." Jack interrupted his beta and smirked at him.

Orson glared and sent him a glare. A childish behaviour from someone who's about his age!

"Jordan, send Penelope to the Silver Key Pack to attend the yearly business conference as our representing manager," he ordered, making his healer's smirk turn into a frown.

"You can't do that. I promised Penelope that I would take her on a trip on our marriage anniversary. I already booked the flight!"

Orson ignored Jack's rambling and walked to the stairs.

Now, I need to deal with the problem upstairs.
