Chapter 1 - Entering Massage Falls, Maine

I looked outside the window and frowned. The town was so... boring. White or yellow houses were the only things there. I looked at my mom and she just smiled and said, "Don't look at me like that, Lucille. Maybe you'll love the town, just like I did." I didn't know how anyone as fantastic as my mother could fall in love with such a boring and drab town like Massage Falls, Maine. And as we drive around and I'm looking all over the place, I see absolutely no one. It is a cold winter day and pretty close to Christmas, so that's not unexpected. But as we got closer to the town center, we still saw no one. My mother and I looked at each other with confused faces because we thought we would see at least one person by now. We reached the edge of town and pulled into a white house. What a surprise it was white. I opened my door and got out. It was a cute two-story house with lots of windows and a cool balcony on the wall. My mom got out of the car and looked at me and said, "Well, Lucy. Here we are." I looked at mom and frowned because that was an old childhood nickname that I had always hated. She just stood there and smiled.

"Why are we even here mom? This place is so boring. There are probably about 30 kids in my grade."

"We are here because I choose for us to be here. Now go inside and choose a room or else I will choose one first. You are going to be a senior in high school. Pull yourself together please."

With that, she walked back to the car and I stood there speechless. My mom had never yelled or anything at me.

After Mom so brutally yelled at me, I decided to head inside, seeing as I wish to never be yelled at by her again. This house has two floors and the first floor is the kitchen, living room and dining room, plus one of the two bedrooms. One of the three bathrooms is also on the first floor. The rest of the house is up on the second floor. I decide on the one bedroom on the first floor and put my backpack and other things from the car into the room. Perfect, I think. Just enough room for all of my books and other things.

I go back outside and find my mother already unloading the car of her things. (I already bought my stuff inside). I hug her and say I'm sorry for earlier and she says that too. Then she says, "Want to go inside and see what restaurants are around town?"

I say, "Yes. I am starving. Let's go!" We run inside to our sparse kitchen (everything, from our beds to our dishes, is on the moving truck that will arrive tomorrow). Mom opens up her phone and asks Siri, "What restaurants are around Massage Falls, Maine?"

Siri replies with, "Hmm, I don't know that one."

So Mom asks again. "Hey Siri, what restaurants are around Massage Falls, Maine?"

Siri then replies with, "Are around what town?"

So Mom says, "Massage Falls, Maine."

Siri goes, "That isn't a town." And turns off.
