After a fitful night of sleep, I woke up at 6:30 the next morning so I wouldn't be late for school. I ate, said goodbye to my mother and started to walk since it was only a five minute walk from my house to the high school and we don't have a second car yet. I arrived around 7:30. No one else was there yet because school starts at 8 but I didn't want to be late on my first day. I sat down and pulled out my phone. I opened up Instagram and saw I had tons of messages from my friends back in Vermont. They all said about the same thing. "Have a nice first day of school. I miss you tons! Love you!" I replied to all, saying I missed them too, and before I knew it, it was 7:55 and people were starting to arrive. I stood up and looked around at all of them. That was the moment I knew that this town was not normal. They all had those pointed ears, like the ones you read about in a fantasy novel. They had ears like Henry did yesterday. And like his mother did too.
Henry approaches me as soon as he arrives. "Hey. Lucille right?" He questions. "Yeah I am." I reply.
"Cool. I can show you around if you want and help you get your schedule?"
"That would be awesome, seeing as I know nothing or no one around here. Thanks so much!" I say with a lot of enthusiasm. I internally scream because my voice sounded so excited and we just stand there for a minute in awkward silence. Then, the doors to the school swing open, but no one is in the doorway. It's like it were... magic. I look at Henry, but it looks like to him, this is an every day occurrence. He smiles at me when he catches me looking at him and motions towards the door, a silent meaning of, do you want to go in now? I nod and he starts to move forward and then stops and motions for me to go ahead. He and I walk next to each other, through the big group of about 240 people. That would be about 40 per grade and I make a mental note to tell mom that. I don't know how I calculated how many people were there. I just have always been good at math as a kid, even though I hate it.
Henry leads me to the main office, which can't even be considered an office. It's huge! There are floor-to-ceiling windows, which I never noticed from the outside. I walk up to a large desk and ring the hand bell that's there. A lady comes right away, looking me up and down and utters, "Lucille Aestra right?" in a voice so quiet I have to strain to hear her. "Yes." I respond, not sure what else to say. I don't know how she already knew who I was, nor did I care because the moment she handed over my schedule, I bolted out of the front office that was bigger than my room and into the throng of people. Henry, of course followed me and managed to stay on my tail, even though there were quite a few people all around us. All of the people were moving at such a high rate of speed.
