Sitting at home, scanner reports ringing slow through my CB radio as the storm outside raged on.
"Elizabeth go to bed already!" Came my younger brother's voice from upstairs. Shaking my head, I yell back and return my attention back to the radio. On nights like this the radio always seems to give me scattered reports. Something to just listen to as the time flies by. That is before a distorted familiar voice rang through the crackle of static.
"Fucking late Rookie…"
"Chief?" I question aloud leaning into the radio to try and catch anything else before a distorted chuckle jutted forth.
"A little to late…", "Why the hell are they going towards the courthouse?" Came another voice clearer then the first. But not familiar at all, confused I get up and grab my radio from my shelf and radio in.
"Hey Chief, you on the radio?"
Waiting for what felt like forever he doesn't respond making a chill run down my spine. Either the weather is blocking the single or something else internally, I truly don't want to believe the alternative. After another few minutes, I grab my coat and tighten my holster to my side before making my way up the stairs.
"Hey! I'll be right back!" I yell through the house as I walk to the front door, stopping when my older brothers head pops out from the kitchen a tired look on his face.
"Where you think you're going?"
"Out. I'll be right back." I repeat, opening the door and stepping out into the pouring rain. My brothers voice echoing behind me.
"Be safe!" Humming I pull up my hood and take a jog towards the courthouse, which only takes me about forty-five minutes give or take as I lean forward a bit on my knees to catch my breath. Stopping in front of the jewelry store my heart leaps out of my chest as Chief's cruiser tailgates a dark hearse causing it to hit the barriers on the road a few yards away from me. Through the rain I can vaguely hear Chief's voice.
"What in the hell?" Rushing over to the scene my palm against the strap of my holster. Getting closer my eye's land on the back of Alice who is leaned over Marie who is breathing heavily. "What is going on?!" I say as soon as I get in front of them.
"Something with Olive. T-This game is getting to her head…" Alice finally says, as Marie shakes her head.
"Whatever is going on its more then a game…" Marie mumbles before Chief's voice rings out.
"PUT YOUR HANDS UP!!"
Removing my gun from the holster I cautiously round the hearse and make my way towards the stairs, shock hitting me when I see one of those cloaked bastards stab him in the side. Lifting my gun, I take my shoot hitting the man in front of me who falls back letting Olive go who I didn't see.
"GET YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR!!"
"Fucking late Rookie…" My heart stutters a bit as the words hit me. Shaking my head, I step around the men and keep my gun trained on them as I bend down to check on Chief.
"Sorry Chief…"
He chuckles, as I help him sit up. Looking back over to the two men, one has the other gathered up in his arms slowly backing up.
"Stay where you are!" I yell once more as something like sand starts to gather around them. "What the fuck…" I curse as the sand slowly covers them, taking another shot the bullet seems to just get absorbed by it before both where gone.
"We need to get back to the bodies in the morgue now." Helping Chief stand up, he leans haphazardly against me as we make our way back to the cruiser. Alice stands, taking long strides to us to take up Chief's other side.
"Why do we got to see the bodies for?"
"I think I know what game those two are playing."
With that we get Chief into the backseat along with Marie and Olive on either side, Alice in the driver seat and me in the passenger seat.
"Weren't the first two victims supposed to be the king and queen of this year's senior prom?"
"Yeah, but what does that have to do with this?"
"This thing is playing a very messed up game of chess…"
"But why start with the king and queen, aren't they supposed to die last. More the king then anything?" Marie questions.
"Something is missing." Olive finally says leaned against Chief's shoulder, who at this point as holding his still bleeding side.
Reaching the station in record time, we pile out and into the building as the storm rages on. Getting Chief to sit at one of the desks, Alice is quick to gather up a first aid kit and some other utensils from the morgue.
"Go look at the bodies again see if something has changed." The question was more directed towards me but before I could move Olive is already making her way with Marie close on her tail.
"Hey! You two stop right there." I shout after them, as they enter the double doors. "Where do you two think you're going?"
"Where helping…" Olive barks back surprising me a bit before continuing through the doors. Shaking my head, I follow close behind.
"And what are we looking for anyway?" I mumble as we step into the morgue, Marie is quick to locate the bodies, pulling them from cold storage. "How? - "
"My dad runs the old sanctuary on the other side of town near the abandoned mills." She is quick to respond before pulling on some gloves to examine.
"Well, let's get this started…" Olive announces pulling a pair of gloves on and handing a pair to me.
"I still have no idea what we are looking for."
"Neither do I…" Marie admits as she undoes the zipper of one of the bags to reveal Henry Dawson. His dead cold eyes surprisingly open staring up towards the ceiling, taking a shaky breath we start our search. For something what I still have no idea.
