Sitting at my desk, listening to the slow music with Alice leaned back in the other chair my phone blares loudly in my pocket. Making her jump as I pull it out, seeing the caller ID I answer it immediately.
"What is wrong Elinor?"
"I think that girls gotten herself into trouble. I'm about to see if I can tail them but I don't know what's going on!" The panic dripping from her voice is undeniable as I reach over and turn the record player off.
"Okay, okay, try to get on their tails. I'll be out there as soon as I can. Keep your phone in the passenger seat on speaker and keep me up to date." Elinor agrees as I grab my keys from the doorway, Alice close behind as we reach my cruiser. "You can't come with me Alice."
"And who is going to stop me? You?" She snaps getting into the passenger seat as I get into the driver's side. Shaking my head, as I rev the engine and drive away from the police station. Listening to Elinor's directions I catch up to the hearse in no time. Turning my lights Marie keeps the petal going.
Cursing I get up beside them, rolling down the window I yell as loud as I could.
"Pull over Marie! Whatever is going on I can help!" Seeing Olive in the passenger seat, my eyes land on the book in her hands. "Fuck!" I curse aloud slowing down a bit to get behind them.
"What is it Andrew?"
"I thought I told Elinor to take all those books away from her. Girl shouldn't be meddling in this." With that I get against the corner of the hearse and push it. Making it tailspin into a nearby roadblock closest to the courthouse. Getting out, I see Olive rush passed the roadblock and towards the front entrance.
Rushing after her, Alice checks on Marie who sits knees bent against the side of the hearse.
Tackling Olive as she climbs the step, I wrap my arms around her.
"What in the hell do you think your doing?!" I yell holding her tight as the rain drenches us.
"I saw the fucker who did it!! I know what he is! We got to stop this before its finished!!"
Confused, I let her go only to grip her wrist as she tries to climb the stairs once more.
"Kid you got me all kinds of confused. Now, start from the beginning." Holding her wrist, she lets out an agitated groan before turning to face me the book tight in her pale hand.
"Can't you tell? This thing, these murders are some game. He's playing it here in our town as the chess board and us as the pieces. We all have a role and he's in there watching it all!" She yells almost looking as crazed as her father before he vanished.
Out of the corner of my eye I see something move from behind the front pilers, pulling her back a new confusion takes up her face.
"COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP!" I yell into the darkness, as a demented laughter peels back.
A short lanky man steps out from behind the piler with a dark hoodie covering his upper features, all that I could see was the twisted smile on his face. Something straight out of horror movie.
"PUT YOUR HANDS UP!" I command once more placing my hand over my pistol as the man slowly drags his feet down the concrete stairs. Stopping about a good ten steps up he stops chuckling. Tilting his head as a dog would confuse before Olive's wrist was torn from my hands.
Turning my head, another man sporting the identical attire holds a knife to Olive's throat a softer smile upon his face as he speaks.
"We must finish the game. We are tired of playing."
"Not my problem hand over the girl!" Cursing in my mind I can't think of any other alternative as the other man above me starts to laugh once more. Before another word could fall something sharp penetrates my side, making me gasp before it was pulled out and a sharp kick knocked me to my feet.
"Uncle!" Olive tries to pull away only stopping when the knife is pushed closer to her throat.
A shot rings out from above, as the man's grip quickly leaves Olive's arm, and he crumples to the floor. The other making an almost inhuman screech before diving down to grab the other.
"GET YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR!!" Looking behind Olive I can barely make out the blurred shape before the voice clicked.
"Fucking late Rookie…"
