Chapter 14 - Rookie

Let's hope this works. We got to stop this before it becomes a massacre. Three poor innocent kids down, how many to go?

Getting into the car Chief drives us to the café on the other side of town. Confusion plastering itself on my face.

"Chief?" Stepping out, I begrudgingly follow. "Chief what are we doing here? Shouldn't we be back at the station?" I question with a wave back towards the car.

"Just come sit a second Rookie." He commands his voice giving no sign of patience as we step into the little semi-empty café. Most Patrons sit on the other side of the room, mumbles and soft laughter being cut off just as soon as we step in. Giving everyone a curt nod Chief leads me to a nearby booth, pulling himself into the seat I do the same on the other side.

"Chief what are we doing?"

"Just stop for a second Rookie. Let me tell you some things."

Nodding a waitress about in her early twenties walks over to us a pen and multi-colored notepad in her sharp nailed grip.

"What can I do you for Henderson?" She asks with a soft smile.

"Jack's Pie please and get one for the rookie too."

Giving us a nod, she turns and walks back behind the counter. Whispering to the cook before taking up some glass and plates.

"This pie was named after my baby sisters' husband. Best damn detective on the force." He finally says leaning back against the plush well worn leather seats. "All because the idiot was able to stop a drug ring ran by the old boss's wife under the basement. At that time never really knew the guy. Fresh face and all." He continues, looking up over the booth to the open windows showing the scattered shower.

"Why now are you explaining this Chief?"

"Because I want you to understand that sometimes you can't have a normal life and this job. Especially in this town, this town has got its ghost like any other. My sister knew it… yet life just kept going."

Confused I look from the waitress to where the Chiefs eyes are now trailing the wall of pictures above the booth. Stopping he reaches over and plucks one off the wall.

"Whatever the hell is going on… it got to do with something that idiot was doing before they disappeared." Laying the picture down, I can see a young man and woman holding a small bundle.

"I've lived here since I was about ten sir, I know their story. But do you really think what happened to them can be connected?" I question as the waitress comes over with two apple pies, a dollop of whipped cream on the top.

"I can only guess from what he had told me years ago. Memory may be a bit foggy, but I can't be mistaken. Something has come back to our little town for revenge, and the two men that are doing this are trying to help it." He sighs, taking a bit of the pie as I lean back against the booth.

"Is this the reason you didn't go straight to the station? You wanted to bombard me with all this?" For a good few minutes Chief doesn't say anything at all, just sits enjoying his pie before looking me in the eye.

"The reason I'm telling you this besides going to the station immediately is because- " Leaning forward he whispers across the booth. "I don't know what eyes are watching us. Got to make it seem like we haven't figured it out yet." He whispers quickly leaning back and laughing a bit, playing off our conversation as he takes another bite of the pie.

An hour or so passes as we sit there, him chatting about random things as I try to wrap my head around what he had told me. Finally, he gets up beckoning me to follow leaving the picture laying face down on the table. Paying for the pies and getting mine boxed we step out into the pouring rain.

"Let's head back to the station I need you to speak to Alice for me." Quirking a brow, we get into the car. With that weird command we drive back to the station a sudden chill wrapping around us.
