Chereads / I'll become the hero / Chapter 2 - At my lowest

Chapter 2 - At my lowest

My life as a hunter wasn't that memorable, training is just mean to survive and not something to put my all into.

I'm not that talented in fighting either. so me putting almost no effort in a field where I have no talent,.is stupid

Bad thing is, I realize all this when I reach the age of thirty and was now a Frontline hunter in a squad name 'Serene'

I can't change the past so I invested in the future,

Try to grow.

Every swing of my sword is full of life that if it have a mouth It would speak 'I want to change'

My ideal was brutally crashed six years later when I reach the end of my life just before the world could end.

And what's the last thing I could remember? it's a man that change the course of the battle, we didn't win but he was memorable, like a true hero

Charging ahead on a unwinnable battle , when all are frightened, giving a light of hope that's what heroes do right?

I woke up to the sound of chattering, I open my eyes and saw the door of the room open.

I stand up, my bare feet can feel how cold and rough the floor is.

Walking out of the room I was greeted by people, all talking and greeting each other

As soon as I walk out a counter saying 29/30 at the top of the room changed to 30/30

The door of the room I was in closed and so did the room next to it, hundreds of identical rooms all closed up.

The sound of metal echoed in the open hall.

The counter turned to an image of Eva

"Good morning, today will mark your training on how to become a hunter, hooray," She said plainly

"As a start"

Multiple paper cards rain down and Eva said

"Answer what's written on those cards, it's not a competition, you can copy the Answer of the one next to you and no one would care"

Her image shifted back to the counter saying 30/30, I grabbed a paper dancing in my view.

Circle with what you are comfortable using, or wanted to use (only one)

Sword

Spear

Bow

Ax

dagger

...

hundred of weapons was listed on that small paper, how I was able to read any of them come as a surprise

I pondered for a moment until pens rained down just like how the questioner did, I grab a pen but hesitated to answer

I used swordsmanship but years of training didn't make me improve on it, maybe I don't have talent in that field

But I can't say anything about the weapon I haven't tried before, maybe my progress with a different weapon be slower compared to swordsmanship.

Moment of hesitation a guy in a suit appeared before us

"If you have chosen your weapon, it's time to practice it," He said before turning his back on us while people on my side started to follow him.

Multiple people stood up and followed him leaving me with three other people.

"agggh, no point in hesitating" I circle the 'sword' and followed them at the very back

We go outside, the warm sunlight hit my skin,

the hot sensation on my barefoot.

The fresh air.

"Now let's give you a tour," He said taking a glance at his back

He guided us into this place.

the cafeteria, multiple classes, a place to get a mission, it's like a school.

When the tour ended we were forced to disband and go to the classes according to the weapon we circled

"Hello," A guy said

"Your name?" Another guy asked.

Three of us walk together, going in the same direction so they must have picked the sword.

"Its Allen"

After saying my name, one of them introduced himself

"I'm Kevin"

He pointed at the other guy

"And he's Dev"

I look at them and said "Nice to meet you, two"

"Nice to meet you too" The two have their voice synchronized

"..."

"..."

after that was an awkward silence until reaching the room that have a sword logo on top.

"Here are the Newcomers"

A fast light rushed toward us and I saw that familiar face

A muscular figure covered with lashes white hair and a long broad sword strap to his back.

He's that guy who single handedly-

"Name is Drew so call me Drew," He said reaching his hand at us

I reach for a handshake but as soon as he clasped my hand I heard a crackle.

He rills me closer and asked

"What happened to your arm?"

"Eaten by a monster" I answered truthfully.

"Don't worry you only need one arm to use a sword" He said letting go of me and going for the two at my side, laughing herestericly waving his hand like he saw a long-lost friend.

As he talk with the two, I greeted the six students that were here earlier than us three

"Okay let's start, grab your weapon," Drew said pointing at the blades laid on the wooden table.

There are a long swords, short, rapiers, and a lot of swords with different designs and shapes of the blade.

They all searched for their weapon, swinging it, inspecting the blade,

I tried to arrange my glasses but I can't touch them their gone, then if they are.

I look at the man that will teach us before looking at the set of swords.

"How can I see?" I asked, all this was supposed to be blurry without my glasses.

But then I realize it, I go back to looking at the weapon knowing that someone put contact lenses on my eye.

I feel dumb

I pick a rapier the reason was that it's the lightest.

I have just a single-arm, I have both in my past life, but the future changed thanks to this, I saw Eva survive so she must have killed the monster.

And no massacre would occur, that happened so sacrificing an arm is not that big of a deal.

I took a deep breath and swing the rapier. I feel my bone getting stretched and my muscles heating up.

A clear sign of not exercising regularly.

"let's start the lesson"

He teach us how to use the weapon we took one by one,

He made us swing them, and copy what he was doing, and the lesson ended, for me that is, I was forced to sit down trying to catch my breath

The others are still standing and are being taught swordsmanship.

While I couldn't even stand up, I was seriously weak. so weak, that I can't keep up with Newcomers like me.

Noon came and everyone was dismissed, all of them left while I struggle to stand up and follow them.

"What a weak body" Drew said, he grabbed my hand helping me to stand up

"You might be put in the Frontline if you don't change," He said,

And I couldn't speak back, what he's saying is not an insult but what would happen in the future, I really would become just that.

I look at him and I saw a ray of sunlight, I saw him kill a giant on his own, so he must know something.

"How can I get strong?" I asked and he smiled like he was waiting just for me to ask that.

"First you need to eat"

"Eat?"

"Yes, meat vegetable fish, eat a lot of it!" He said before holding the rapier I have which looks like a toothpick in his hand.

"This doesn't suit you, you must have taken this considering your physique," He said searching the blade he put it carefully on the table near the others

He grabbed a long sword and said

"Use this instead, might be a little heavy but it suits you"

I grabbed it out of his hand and it feels like gravity changed, I let go of the sword and it falls to the ground my hand was pale red.

"Ouch"

"Second is swing that sword six hundred times a day"

"..."

I couldn't even lift it,

I shook my head and said

"Thank you"

"Your my student," He said leaving the room, so I was left alone.

I stared at the sword he picked for me and begin to lift it up

"uff"

It was heavy but I can lift it for a short amount of time which I did to put it with the other blades on the table.

After that, I left to go to the cafeteria but before I can go out, Kevin and Dev entered the place, they bought a plastic bottle filled with water and a bowl of porridge

"You okay?" Kevin asked While Dev handed me the porridge

I look at them Sat down on the floor and said "Thanks"

They smile at each other before Dev said

"So did you know where will head to?"

I said my mouth full, looking up at their faces.

"We can just ask the others, I'm sure they'll go here after their done eating"

"What if they don't?" Kevin asked and we all look at each other.

I gulped the porridge leaving the bowl empty, grab the water bottle on my side, and said

"le-

"Let's wait at the cafeteria," Dev said what I was about to say.

I nodded and we three all go to the cafeteria.

In a large room filled with chatter, groups are formed by the weapon they want to learn.

The table which has a banner picture of a sword was at the very end.

Kevin pointed at the banner, "it's here" he ran while dev and I followed from behind.

When we got there, we saw people laughing with each other, almost half of them have that physique most men dreamed of.

"Stop!" One of them shouted and they all stop laughing and focused on the three of us.

"Who?" The man asked.

Dev pushed Kevin to the front, Kevin glared at the two of us before talking

"We're part of the sword," He said not sure of what he was saying.

"Oh, are you guys, Newcomers," One of the men on the back table said looking at the three of us with a smile.

He pull his blade and said "Look!,-

"Stop your scaring them," the guy at the front said and the man close his blade.

"Are you here for the next lesson?" The guy asked and Kevin nodded.

Kevin was a short guy with a surprisingly buff body a characteristic you will likely see in dwarfs.

"Then you should hurry, the lesson room is locked when the class starts so you won't be able to get inside" The guy stated

He pointed at a banner of, book and quill where no chair was occupied.

"Just find that banner"

He bowed and said his thank you, running while I and Dev follow from behind

"do we need to run?" I asked as I was getting out of breath.

"We might get late," Kevin said and Dev replied.

"We don't even know where the class will be held?"

Kevin stopped so did me and dev,

"Hah, how about we separate," I said and Kevin replied

"Bad Idea"

" Time is short we should just take a gamble," Dev said.

"So separate or not?" I asked and Kevin said 'no' while Dev agreed with me.

"When one of us finds the classroom we meet here," Dev said, Kevin hesitated but a decision was already made while I nodded. so we take our path.

The tour didn't mention the next class, where did the two of them even get this information? I pondered running to the west.

Kevin take the east.

While Dev took north.

I was running wildly talking to people in sight asking for direction but they always say the same words.

'Find the book and quill'

I try to search my memory but I can't remember anything about this happening.

As I ran through the long halls I passed fewer and fewer people.

And arrived at the giant door a book was on its top, there's also a timer of

45 seconds, slowly getting lower.

I can't find a quill in the sign so I hesitate to enter

Tap

I heard a footstep and at a path on a different direction is where I saw Dev covered in sweat

"got here"
