Chapter 6 - Ollivander Wand Shop

Rune's mother held a few items now as they exited Eeylops Owl Emporium. On Rune's arm perched a Great Horned owl with blue eyes and white colored feathers. Admittedly, it was the first owl Rune spotted when we walked into the store. He wanted a dog but dogs weren't allowed so he had to buy a pet. The owl simply caught his eye with his beauty.

They were told that he was a particularly silent and patient bird, as well as a loyal one. That information made Rune want him more-- and so they got him. Egan, the name Rune gave to his owl, cooed out into the afternoon as it climbed up to his shoulder and rested there instead. This allowed him to drop his arm and let it rest on his side instead. "The last thing I need is... a wand."

"I think I saw a wand shop earlier-- Ollivander's was the name." As his mother said, the shop's sign appeared up ahead as they rounded the corner.

They all came to a stop in front of the store. "Here, let me take your owl and we'll wait right out here." Rune stared up at his mother for a moment.

Usually, they all went in together, so going in alone spiked a tad bit of anxiety within him. But... he did see why. They both had full arms-- it would be more of a burden if they went inside with it all.

He looked up at Egan and carefully reached up to him.

All he had to do was gently graze him talons before he climbed onto his hand with ease and remained still. Rune's movements were careful as he reached his hand up to his mother's shoulder. When close enough, Egan spread his beautiful wings and flew up towards his mother. The woman tried her best not to jump in surprise at the sudden flight, but kept still well enough for the owl to settle down. She released a slightly winded chuckle and smiled towards her daughter. Rune smiled back at her, taking a deep breath before turning towards the shop and walking in.

There was no bell to greet Rune into the shop like some of the others did. This one was empty, just like the first shop he had gone into. This time, the walls and shelves didn't hold clothing. This one held small boxes, one to each cubby. Rune approached the counter, peering over and around it. "Uh... Hello?" He called into the silence.

It remained silent for another moment-- and he was about to call out again-- until a man on a rolling floor to ceiling ladder came into view from somewhere down the hall and from the left. The sudden appearance made Rune jump.

"There you are! About time you showed up." The elder man, Ollivander perhaps, spoke with a grin before climbing down the ladder.

Rune expressed confusion, much like he had done with Quirrell earlier that afternoon. And just like Quirrell did, he answered Rune unspoken question. "I've heard a thing or two about you around here. Saw you pass the shop a few times as well. It's hard not to tell a new witch or wizard when you see one. If you may, what is your name, young man." Ollivander stood on the other side of the counter now with his eyes focused on Rune.

"Azriel Rune Black, sir." Rune spoke his name politely. His quick and easy observations were rather foreign to Rune.

It made him a tad bit nervous, and yet at the same time, Rune couldn't help but be interested in this man. HE appeared to be rather wise, in his eyes. Like he knew so much more than the average person. It made Rune want to know more as well. However, there is only so much Rune can do right now and at his current age.

"Black... fascinating..." Ollivander spoke in slight awe, recognition was written all over his face.

Without another word, however, he turned around and began looking through the main shelves to find a wand suitable for Rune. He mumbled to himself as he walked along the wooden frame of the cubbies. When he stopped, his finger slid up till he stopped at one particular cubby. He reached in and pulled out a thin, long box. Ollivander opened it as he walked back, holding it up for Rune to see. "Let's try this one first..." He passed it over to Rune from over the counter, "Vine wood, unicorn hair core, eight inches..."

Runw took it with furrowed brows, "Mr. Ollivander-- what's the purpose of you describing the wand's properties to me?" Rune looked from the wand and to him as Rune waited for an answer.

"You see, the properties of the wand help to determine how the wand will react to you." Ollivander said this as if it was the most obvious thing.

Well, to him, it most likely was. I've never handled wands before, after all. "Go ahead and give it a wave," Ollivander urged.

Rune pressed his lips into a thin line and looked back to the wand. With a curt nod, he waved it once to the left.

Everything currently on the counter flew off in the direction he had waved the wand. Books, papers, an ink and quill set, and various other things hit the ground with a loud clatter. His eyes widened and he quickly passed the wand back to Ollivander.

"S-Sorry! I'm sorry-" Rune had turned to begin picking it up when the man's laughter interrupted him.

"No, no! Don't apologize! It's all apart of the process. It'll be an easy clean up, so don't worry. This just wasn't the right wand for you," He explained as he placed the wand back into its box and closed the lid to it. Ollivander went back to where he had pulled the box from to return it to its proper place before turning back to head down another isle.

"Hmm... I wonder..." He spoke as if he was deep in thought as he pulled another box from a different shelf.

This one was a bit longer, which proved to be holding a longer wand as he removed it from its box. He returned to the other side of the counter Rune stood at and passed it to him as he had done before. "Here. Try this one. Its ah..." He paused to get a better look at the wand before continuing to speak, "Yes, it's England Oak wood, with a dragon heart-string core-- eleven inches."

Rune reached up to take the wand as he concluded his observation. He looked at it a bit nervously before waving the wand like he had did before.

The reaction was positively different this time. A ball of light came from the tip of the wand before it detached itself and flew towards the mess that was previously made. Flying around in a circular motion, the mess flew up into the air with the ball of light and slid back into their rightful place.

As it did so, Rune watched in awe.

His eyes followed the light as it settled the items down and returned to the tip of his wand before fading out into the nothingness. When he looked back up and away from his wand, he was met with the kind smile of Ollivander, "Amazing...!"
