Chapter 14 - Static Shock Ch. 14

Not surprisingly, Nick found that the men punctured all of his tires, and even broke the windows. "At least they didn't key it," he said, trying to look on the bright side. Nick went and grabbed what he could from his truck, besides his filled gas canister and chips, there wasn't much stuff worth salvaging. "Need help?" Kasey asked, "no I think I'm done here," Nick replied, taking his jerrycan and a bag of BBQ flavored potato chips. He stopped for a moment and considered taking Jerry's unfinished EMP with, but decided against it. "Mary said that there's a first aid kit back at the garage with Donald's cars," Kasey said, once the two of them began walking back to the house. "Good, Jerry'll live another day," Nick replied, looking down at the ashy ground and charred remains of his friend's home.

He noticed something shining in the rubble, he dropped the stuff in his hands and sifted through the debris to see what the item was. "What is it?" Kasey asked, "I don't know, but it got my attention," Nick replied, not stopping with his rummaging. He grabbed something that didn't felt like the rest of the ruins, and pulled it up. It was a framed picture of Jerry and his parents in front of the farm's entrance. The frame was burnt, and the glass was covered in ash, but Nick knew what he was looking at. He looked over to Jerry, who was still searching, "hey, Jerry, you might want to see this," Nick said, waving the framed picture in the air. Jerry stopped what he was doing and walked over to see what Nick was trying to show him. When he realized what was in Nick's hand, he slowed down, and had a somber look on his face. Nick handed it to him and said, "doesn't seem like there's much else to scavenge here dude." Jerry sighed, and said, "you're probably right, my mom and dad are in the garage right now, I'll go tell them that we should go," "need help?" Kasey asked, concerned for Jerry. "Yes, please and thanks," he replied. Kasey helped Jerry to the garage and Nick followed them from behind, carrying his stuff again.

When they entered the shed, Mary was nursing Donald with an ice pack and some bandages. "How are you holding up dad?" Jerry asked, sitting beside him, waiting to get patched up next. "Well, I don't think I'll be able to drive for a while," Donald said, with a sigh. "I'm willing to drive if it's all right with you sir," Nick offered. "You have my permission, just don't go crazy," Donald replied, wincing as Mary finished up putting bandages around his head. "Thanks honey," he said. "So which car are we taking this time around, pops?" Jerry asked, as his mother began to patch him up. There was three other cars, one of them was an antique race car, and only had enough room for two people, the other two were more recent models, one was a big black truck and the other was a minivan, with a sky-blue paint job that looked recent. "How much stuff are we going to be carrying?" Donald asked, deciding between the truck or the minivan. "Not much, but considering we're running away from psychos and aliens now, I think we're gonna be on the road a lot, and that we're gonna have to scavenge a lot for supplies," Nick answered. "The truck then," Donald said, standing up, and getting the keys to the truck. He handed them over to Nick and asked, "where are we gonna go?" Nick thought for a couple of seconds and said, "where's the nearest town?"

Once Mary was done fixing Jerry up, everyone loaded up supplies in the truck, had one last look at the farm, and drove off.
