Chapter 18 - Static Shock Ch. 18

They found a lot less stuff in this town compared to the others, notably so, since it seemed to be small and it looked like many others had passed through it, likely going to the same destination as Nick and the others. Still, they stayed the night in an inn that was trashed and deserted just like every other one they stayed in before. In the morning, they packed what they could and drove to the camp they hoped was still there when they arrived. "You think the saucer might've gone to the camp?" Kasey asked Nick, once everyone seemed to be asleep. "I don't know, I'm assuming they knew about the heat sensing thing, so depending on the layout of the camp, there's a possibility that the ship didn't notice them either, but we'll find out soon enough, " he said. "That seems rather bleak don't you think?" Kasey said. "Heh yeah, but I suppose there is a silver lining here, those guys are healed up and ready for more action if need be," Nick replied, pointing at Jerry, Mary, and Donald. "Well, I suppose that was more realistic," Kasey said, looking out through her side window, seeing the scenery. They continued to talk with each other throughout most of the trip, killing time with each other.

"I think you should wake the others up soon, pretty sure there's only five miles left to go," Nick said to Kasey. "Alright," she replied, before shortly waking the others up. Everyone was wide awake when they finally arrived at the camp, it was in a very thick forest, with a gravel road leading into it. "Are you guys ready for the moment of truth?" Nick asked all the others. "Yuppers," Jerry said, Mary and Donald nodded, and Kasey said, "yes sir." "Here we go," Nick said, driving into the forest and to the entrance of the camp.

Fortunately, it looked like the camp was still being used by people, at the front entrance to the camp there were two armed guards, they had automatics, with pistols as side arms. One moved up to the truck, and signaled for the group to get out of the car, and they complied. "Were you followed?" The man asked, waving at the other guard, who then used a walkie talkie to communicate with someone. "I'm pretty confident that we were not being stalked by anyone or anything," Nick answered. The man narrowed his eyes at him, and then proceeded, "do you have supplies?" "Yes we do, food, gas, water-" "guns?" the guard interrupted Nick. He hesitantly replied, "yes, but only pistols," "how about ammunition?" "A couple boxes of ammo, most of it is miscellaneous." "I'm gonna give you two options, one, you keep your guns and ammo, but we keep the truck until you want to leave, and second, you can keep the truck but we confiscate the ammo and guns," the guard said. "Could you give us a minute?" "Take your time." Nick turned back to the others, "what do you guys think?" "I think I would feel safer if we still had the guns, and if we want to leave, we can leave," Donald said, "I agree," Mary jumped in. "I suppose," Jerry said, Nick looked at Kasey, "guess we should keep the guns," "okay," Nick replied. He turned to the guard, "we're keeping the guns, here," he handed over the keys to the truck to the guard. "Alright, we have some guys coming over who'll get your stuff and take you to where you'll be staying," the man replied. "Thanks," Nick said. After a couple of minutes, some men in a heavy duty pickup truck rolled out of the entrance, one got out, took the keys from the guard and drove the truck somewhere else in the camp. The others packed the pickup with the group's supplies, and had the group sit in the trunk, as they went to where they would stay.

They were taken to a secluded looking cabin, got off the truck, took their supplies and went in. "There's no AC, so I would crack a window open," one of the men said before leaving, "will do," Nick said with a wave, and continued to bring supplies into the cabin. Once they were done, they chose where they would sleep, there were two bunk beds and a futon. Donald and Mary got the bottom bunks, Kasey and Jerry got the top, and Nick had the futon to himself. They all slept, relieved, that they could stop driving and stay a while somewhere.
