"Do you really think it'll really turn out alright?" Nick asked Kasey, the others were asleep again, though there was still some daylight in the sky this time. "I don't know, but sometimes one needs to have faith and hope that it'll be okay," Kasey responded after a couple of seconds of silence and stillness. "I kinda wish I had the same optimism that you have, I thought I was realistic, but whenever I'm talking to you, I feel like I'm pessimistic," Nick confessed, almost turning his head to look Kasey in her eyes, but deciding against it, and kept his eyes on the road. "People can change, I mean look at us now, we're killers, I doubt any of us had killed someone before the aliens came," Kasey said trying to comfort Nick. "I'm pretty sure Jerry shot a burglar who was in his house this one time, didn't kill him though," he replied. "Hmm," Kasey said, before turning her back on Nick, "I'm gonna try and get some sleep now. Will you be okay on your own?" "Yeah, good night," he answered.
Nick was the only one awake, he was driving down a barren road. Besides the lights coming from the car, it was pitch black, not even the moon was visible in the sky. Which would explain why Nick's nerves jumped immediately when he noticed something in the far distance. In an instance Nick knew what he was looking at, it was the same thing he had seen a handful of times before, it was a flying saucer by the invading aliens. Nick quickly turned the lights off, drove the truck to the side road, turned the AC all the way up, and waited anxiously for the ship to pass. He had goosebumps, and he couldn't tell if he had them due to being scared for his life or being freezing cold. The saucer got closer and closer at speeds faster than Nick had seen before. At last, it finally passed the truck, and Nick almost had tears forming from being so petrified, he calmed himself down, turned the AC and engine off, and tried to sleep for the rest of the night.
In the morning, Nick woke up to find that everyone was still alive, and still asleep. He sighed in relief and proceeded to move on down the road that was now lit by the morning sun. It was a couple more hours until Kasey woke up with a groan and a stretch with her arms. "How long have you been awake?" she asked curiously, concerned for Nick's health. "I took a nap a while back, but I would say I've been awake since six o'clock," he replied, rubbing his eyes with one hand, while the other was still on the steering wheel. "If you say so, I don't think we're in a rush, so don't push yourself too much okay?" she told Nick, not wanting him to get himself hurt. "I can't help but think we are in a rush though... there was a saucer last night," he said, reluctantly. Kasey got goosebumps, but her facial expression didn't show how mortified she actually was. "It was really close," Nick continued, "it must've been midnight cause it was pitch black, which is why I saw it behind us while driving, I pulled to the side, blasted the AC and killed the lights." He turned his head to Kasey and met her gaze that was uncomfortable and a bit disturbed, "I thought we were going to die, but it passed by us and didn't slow down or anything, we're real lucky I was awake enough to see it and act fast," he finished, turned his head back to the road and continued to drive in silence.
The rest eventually woke up on their time, and when everyone was up, they stopped for breakfast in a town. The only thing that differentiated this one compared to all the empty ones, was that there was graffiti all over saying "camp 50 miles northeast, MAKE SURE YOU'RE NOT FOLLOWED!!!" It was decided by the group that they would stay in the town, stock up on supplies and leave for the camp in the morning.
