An extremely short blurb.
Though a bit late, this was inspired by my own July 4th this year:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cold hands rested on a black steering wheel, and the dark interior of a car blended in the with the inky black that blotted out the night sky.
As the girl drove home, she saw the taillights of of other cars on the highway all around her. However, she felt lonely.
Despite having five seats in her car, four were vacant. She herself occupied the driver's seat. The emptiness was amplified by the seat to her right. It used to be used, but now that there was nothing and no one to fill her void it just didn't seem right to get into the car by herself anymore.
The fire that once burned in her eyes had already been muffled by dim, murky clouds of lost hopes. Despite the noise that surrounded her everyday, it was always quiet. What was once heated passion had fizzled out to cold indifference. Nothing managed to pierce through the thick, foggy substance that blanketed her senses and dulled her emotions.
Suddenly, there was a loud crack.
Brilliant colors
Exploded
in the dark, reigniting the sole smoldering ember left. It was as if that first sound had triggered something: a chain of fireworks that lit up her world from the sides of the highway.
Where others heard only a series of cracks caused by the fireworks, she herself felt more than that. The oily, sticky substance that had once covered her from the outside world was cracking too; burned away by flames of hope and reassurance. She knew it.
That day, she drove home in the dark.
But her heart continued to be illuminated by constant bursts of vibrant, dazzling light.
