Chapter 12 - Reach

Once again delving into that idea of distance. Have you ever experienced the feeling of being extremely close, yet even further from something or someone?

She watched unblinkingly, or even dumbly, as the shadows on the wooden ceiling shifted mysteriously.

Ebony forests, dark horses, women shrouded in thin long, black veils, inky letters, and many more told her a story every day. They were in their positions day and night, faithfully playing out their roles. They were so close! Just a yard or two away.

In contrast, people came and went. They peered at her then prodded her and usually proceeded to gravely shake their heads before leaving. Not that she could feel it anymore. Whether the physical discomfort or the waves of disappointment that she could feel radiate off of her visitors every time, she was numb to it all.

Her pale and frail hands occasionally twitched, as if attempting to reach up and touch the sable world above her. How she longed to join the bewitching figures that waltzed across her room daily!

She could just imagine the wonderfully blithe promenades they would take together across antique cherry planks, smiling and laughing together. The fantastic companions they would make. The plays they would perform, perhaps for future occupants of her bed. She would become one of them.

But here she was, stuck and alone.

Infinitely far away from her dreams of happiness.
