Wails and cries flew out of a white hospital ward. They looped and twisted around people, finally landing at my feet. I followed them to their source.

In front of me lay a struggling woman. Her face was pinched, blue, and lined with wrinkles as she fought to bring another being into the world. Shifting my gaze lower, there was a similarly pinched, blue face.

More women dressed in light blue scrubs hovered around the bed. The newborn child had been neatly wiped, cleaned, and placed to the side. I sat next to it, waiting, as I idly noticed the rich burn in its mother.

Suddenly, loud beeps came from a monitor next to the woman. The other people gasped. The blue in her face suddenly reddened to blood, and an unspoken cry suddenly ripped itself out of her mouth as she gaped like a fish out of water. The flush spread to her neck, then her shoulders, and the rest of her body until she was drenched in a coat of cherry red paint.

Then she burst. Burst like an inside out watermelon. Fleshy puke green bits, crisp shards of black, and thin scraps of crimson painted a grotesque Christmas on the blank walls.

Her penance had been paid for the child.
