Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Charlotte's POV

After agreeing to Ariana's persuasion to host a celebration party, I hung up the phone and started cleaning my house. We came to a mutual agreement of hosting the party Saturday evening. As I was busy tidying up the living room, I heard my phone ring.

I turned off the vacuum cleaner and took the call. It was from Tiffany, my wicked half-sister. The word has no value as it resounds, she had never even considered me as a friend, never been gentle with me except on occasions which was always for her personal gain.

I gritted my teeth furiously, holding the phone tightly in my hand. I imagined squeezing the wind from Tiffany's neck. I'm still heartbroken at the fact that she's dating my boyfriend!

She pretended to get close to me in order to snatch Mike away from me, she succeeded in doing so. Now, I had lost him, not because I thought he was a caring guy, but because he had been rooted in my heart for over four years. He was still there.

I was unsure whether I should hang up or not, unfortunately, curiosity got the better of me.

"Charlotte?"

"Yes. It's me," I replied through gritted teeth.

Cue the poor me routine.

"Oh, Charlotte, I'm extremely sorry for what I have done. It was never a betrayal, my sweet sister. You know, I couldn't hold myself from thinking of Mike. I loved him so much, and everything happened all of a sudden. We never intended to hurt yo--"

"I'm busy at the moment--" I fought the urge to scream.

She couldn't free herself from thinking of my boyfriend? She had the universe of guys to choose from and she only thought of my boyfriend?

"Charlotte, hear me for a minute. Mike and I--"

"Sorry, but I've got things to do."

I don't want to hear her anymore. She'll keep on saying the same thing again and again, and I don't want to break up with her again.

"Oh, really? Do you think we make a cute couple? You guys didn't really fit together anyway," Tiffany dropped the phony sweet tone, and I collapsed on the sofa.

What the—!

I wanted to scream through the phone so badly, but I held myself from doing that.

"In fact, you don't deserve anything above your league. Next time you try to fish a man, make sure he's equal to you. Goodbye!"

Tiffany hung up the phone while I was fuming with rage. Fuck you, Tiffany!

She did this on purpose! She did this to irritate me!

I felt like throwing away the phone but that was the only phone I had. Tears ran down my cheeks.

Oh no! Don't you dare cry again.

That's the only thing that could unleash the tension that's been accumulating within those two days that felt like two weeks.

I hated Tiffany's voice much more than anything I could possibly hate. It was not that she had been very nice to me before, she's got an irritating behaviour but this was really unexpected. It suddenly dawned on me how interested she was when it came to Mike. All I did was to talk more about him so that she'd be nice to me. After all, we are of the same blood.

My grip on the phone grew tighter and tighter. I bit my lip to hold myself from breaking down.

No! I won't let this stupid girl get to me. I refuse.

My heart seared with pain. I used to say feelings come and go, but it didn't stop the pain from the betrayal tearing my heart. I kept reminding myself that I had to move on, which wasn't working.

I tried to distract myself by trying to make myself a good meal, but before I could get up my phone rang… again. My irritation bubbles to the surface.

What if it's her again?

I decided to take the call.

"This time, I'm gonna kill you through the phone!" I said as my finger slowly touched the answer icon that was displayed on the screen. My other hand clenched tightly into a fist.

The caller ID displayed 'Anna'. I was confused.

Anna? I don't know anyone with the name of Anna. Someone must've dialed the wrong number.

I answered the call.

"Hello?"

"Is this Charlotte Rudolph?"

It was a very enchanting female voice. A voice that was pleasantly familiar.

"Yes. Who is this?"

"I'm Brianna. Hope you remember me."

Oh—Brianna! That gorgeous woman I saw in the elevator the other day. No wonder I recognized her voice.

"I remember you. We met at your father's office."

"Yup, that's me. Uh… Hey, I called to ask if you can help me sort some things out. Will you help me?"

Help you? We've just met and didn't have much of a conversation.

"Uh..." I muttered with confusion.

"I know what you're thinking. Why should I ask you this, right? I think you'd be perfect for the job!"

A job? What kind of job?

"Okay… Do you mind if I ask what the job entails?"

"Well… I think it would be better if we talk face to face."

I felt an urge to know more.

"What is it about?" I blurted.

"Oh, Charlotte, we'll talk about everything in detail tomorrow, I promise. I just need your consent to this. Please say yes?"

This seemed so weird to me.

"Alright," I replied with a tinge of hesitation in my voice.

"Thank you, see you at the company tomorrow. I'll meet you there at the entrance!"

Brianna hung up, leaving me puzzled. I felt nervous about the next day and didn't know what was the cause of a sudden jump of events happening in my life. First, my boyfriend cheated on me. Second, a woman called me saying that I was selected to be the assistant manager. And now, Brianna has something to do with me? My mind was totally confused.

Unexpected things are happening to me lately...
