Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Becoming Jane

(Edited)

Violet examined this new body that she had and found out that it was so weak compared to her past. She didn't know mortals could be like this.

Well, she's the most powerful mage in their kingdom and could live a thousand years once she reached her prime but she didn't reach the zenith of immortality yet. Only the gods could. She could still grow old and would eventually stay older for such a long time and would grow like that of the Hermit she met.

Violet tried to feel if there's any energy flowing around her. There was, but the amount was very minimal. Everything she felt were distant life energy from the few plants and trees within the radius.

If there's an abundant amount, then maybe with this new body, she could perform magic again.

She was so focused on feeling the energy around her when the door suddenly opened.

A woman on her early forties immediately rushed beside her with tears running through her eyes.

It was Ann Sanchez. Jane Sanchez's now mother.

"Good grief! You're finally awake! Oh God! Thank you!" The woman said while hugging her.

Realizing that she had just woken up, the latter then retracted to check if she was not hurt by the hug.

"Are you okay? I didn't hurt you, did I?" Mrs. Sanchez asked in panic especially when she saw Violet or Jane was only silently looking at her.

She didn't even reciprocated her hug. Which was so unusual because ever since she found and saved the young Jane on that fateful night, the latter would never let go of her arms and since then, Jane's favorite thing was being hugged by her.

Violet looked at her in confusion but then she recalled in Jane's memories that she loved being hugged by Mrs. Sanchez so much.

But Violet... she had forgotten what it feels like to receive maternal affection and care.

Her mom was so busy doing her responsibilities for the Kingdom that she was often neglected and only the servants and her father who was still not yet a General of their army would interact and show their affection with her. One day, she heard the news that her mother had died of an unknown illness.

That the number one healer of the kingdom could not be cured and just a month after, she died.

Because of this, she lost her mother.

Then her father brought home a woman when she was fifteen. And that's when she realized her father had a one night affair with another woman.

But her step-mother only looked at her with enmity and made her half-sister to hate and envy her.

It took time for Violet to snap out of her memory lane and when she did, she realized that Mrs. Sanchez was now looking at her sadly. She felt pain in her heart.

She's no longer Violet. She's Jane now and she should take good care of Jane's loved ones as she owe it to her.

She realized that her silence made Mrs. Sanchez to worry and be sad.

"Ma-ma." Violet hesitated to call her.

"Yes child, do you feel any discomfort everywhere? I'll call the doctor."

"Mama...I am fine." Violet reassured but seeing that Mrs. Sanchez would not believe her, she heaved a sigh and continue, "In fact, I wanted to go home now. Mama, can I go home?"

"Are you really still my Jane?" Mrs. Sanchez asked Jane.

"Of course Mama! I'll be forever your Jane." Violet said with a warm smile on her beautiful face.

"Oh Jane! You damn child! You scared me to death! Why did you do that!" Mrs. Sanchez said as she hit her arm affectionately.

She looked angry but actually she was not. She's just so worried for this daughter.

Though Jane was not from her, she raised her like her own.

And she felt so lucky for Jane was so sweet and sensible child. She's also very responsible sister for her siblings.

"Mama, I'm sorry. When I saw the child running towards the street, my heart could not help but to save her." Violet said as she recalled what Jane was feeling at that moment.

"Is she okay?" Violet suddenly asked as she was worried for the child in Jane's memory. Ever since she lost her baby, children would always have a soft spot on her hearf.

"Yes. They even visit you every week. Her mom, Mrs. Shaw had volunteered to pay for your hospitalization here." Mrs. Sanchez told her.

"Really?" Violet asked as she was surprised because someone would do so for her.

After what had happened to her, she had lost hope in humanity. Actually, she didn't have higher hope when she woke up in this world.

Through Jane's knowledge, she could roughly guess that it was very expensive to be hospitalized. And for three months with no signs of waking up, it would cause a big hole on their already empty savings.

As Violet realized this, she felt sad for Jane and her family.

The concept of money and wealth was the same in both worlds. So it's not something she found hard to adopt.

'Don't worry Jane, I'll take good care of them.' Violet promised.

"Mama, about Papa's debt. I'm sorry if I cannot help you in paying it for now." Violet told Mrs. Sanchez.

"Jane, it's okay. I told you not to mind about that. It's my responsibility as your father's wife to pay it. But you, my child, it's not your responsibility at all." Mrs. Sanchez tried to explain.

"But Mama, I want to help. I will only feel so useless as a daughter if I won't help you. We're a family. And I owe it to you and Papa that I'm here." Violet wholeheartedly said.

She mean it. She could feel Jane's feelings deep inside her.

"Still, I am the mother, so I should be the provider." Mrs. Sanchez responded to her daughter's stubborn reply.

"Don't argue with me about this, okay? You have helped a lot. I used some of the money you have sent to me to start a pastry shop back in our town. So far, it have been doing fine for a year now. If this continues, we'll be able to pay your father's debt in three years time." Mrs. Sanchez told her.

'Then, that's a relief.' Violet thought.

At least she would have time to get used to this world and so, she could help them.

Then the mother and daughter heard a soft knock on the door.

Then the mother and the daughter saw a woman and a child peeping by the door frame to visit her.

"Mrs. Shaw!" Mrs. Sanchez called on to her when she saw the familiar figure.

"Hi. I come after the hospital staff informed me that you're already awake. Also, Celeste wanted to meet her savior. Ahm, did we disturb her resting?" Mrs. Shaw asked.

"No! You didn't." Violet answered her instead.

Violet then turned her attention to the little girl standing beside Mrs. Shaw.

"Hello. How are you doing little girl? Don't do that again okay? Good thing this sister was present at that time or else, your mom will be sad." It was Violet who was speaking as she expressed her feelings.

Of all people present in the room, she's the only person who knew too well how painful it was to lose a child.

"Okay." Celeste answered.

"Good. Then I am relieved to hear that."

"Thank you...for saving me...pwetty sistow!" Celeste said as she ran towards her and hugged the latter's arm.

Violet was in a daze as she could feel and hear the child's thoughts.

"Careful Celeste! You're hurting Sister Jane." Mrs. Shaw reprimanded her daughter.

"I'm sowwy." The child let go of the hold and then looked down as she pouted. She was about to cry.

Violet felt sad as she could feel that the child was genuinely sad.

"Ahm. It's okay baby girl. See? Sister's not hurt at all." Violet said as she flexed her muscle while trying to impress the little girl.

"Pwetty sistew, why are you so pwetty? Mommy, I want to be with pwetty sistew! Can we make hew come with us?" Celeste looked at her mother while making such request.

"Celeste, we can't. Sister Jane's a student. But we can ask her to drop by in our house when she's available." Mrs. Shaw said while looking at Violet hoping that the latter won't mind.

"Your mom's right. But, don't worry, I'll visit you when I have time. Your mom will give me your address." Violet said as she touched the child's little hand.

Feeling that the child was now happy, Violet felt ease in her heart.

"Really?" Celeste looked at Violet with a teary eyes.

"Yes."

Mrs. Shaw then looked at Celeste and then to Violet.

"Jane, thank you for saving my daughter. I don't know what I will do if something happened to my daughter." Mrs. Shaw said.

"Ma'am, anyone who's capable will do the same if they're present that time instead of me." Violet said for Jane.

What she did was not a big deal.

"No. You save my daughter while risking your life. So, it's just right that I'll repay your kindness back. Celeste is very important for me and my husband, so we'll do everything for the person who saved our baby."

"Ma'am, answering my hospitalization is already enough. Thank you," she said.

"No, thank you."

Then Mrs. Shaw let Celeste to play with her. No, more like they were drawing something.

"You're so lucky to have a daughter like Jane. I wish Celeste will grow up like her." Mrs. Shaw honestly said.

She could not find anything bad about Jane. She's very beautiful, kind and at the same time down to earth.

"Yes. I am so lucky that she chose me to be her parent. And I'll make sure to fulfill my promise to her." Mrs. Shaw said.

"If you didn't mind me asking, what do you mean she chose you to be her mother?" Mrs. Shaw curiously asked.

"She's not really my biological daughter." Mrs. Shaw told her and she didn't know why but she saw a spark in Mrs. Shaw's eyes.

However, before she could even ask the meaning behind it, it was no longer there.

The spark was not there like it didn't happen to begin with.
