I feel nothing, as if I'm just floating off into the vast space. Nothing more than just a weightless, meaningless pile of flesh and bones...
"abbie…"
Suddenly, a sharp stinging sensation starts running through the course of my body, through my veins, until finally it completely engulfs my body whole…
"Abbie!"
A foul odour abruptly attacks my senses everything. The smell of burning, smoke and another smell I can't exactly figure out.
"W- What's that smell… ugh…" I manage to whisper.
A light starts shining somewhere in the distance, and I slowly make sense of my surroundings.
"Abbie! You're awake! Are you ok?" It's Joey, he's bleeding all over the place.
"J- Joey! I'm fine but what about you!? your head is bleeding like crazy!"
Instead of answering me, he just hauls me onto his back and starts running. I see Ellie up ahead, screaming at us to hurry up, Joey's only words were "Don't look back" but I couldn't help but to look anyway.
It was awful, buildings demolished cars flipped upside down and stuck in walls with shattered windows. But the most intimidating of all, the massive asteroid heading coming down far off into the distance. Then I noticed all the dead bodies. They had been stabbed by debris, hung by wires, crushed by cars. They were all over the place. That smell earlier, was the smell of dead bodies.
I suddenly felt sick and turned back round. Hand over mouth, I manage to ask, "What the hell happened here…" My only response was joey shaking his head, obviously holding back his vomit too.
At this point, all I can do I just try my best and hold back my tears and vomit as we ran and ran. Aimlessly without a destination in mind, just a goal; Get as far away as possible from that…
Hours later we make a stop in a village where a refugee camp was set up by the locals and we took shelter in the cottage that was kindly offered to us. Joey placed me down on the floor next to the fireplace and walked to the other end of the room.
Without saying anything, Joey fell fast asleep on the cold dark oak wood floor. He's been walking with me on his back for at least 2 hours and every time I asked him to let me down, he would just walk even faster, pushing himself to the limit of his poor body.
Ellie walked to the chair in the back of the room and sat there starting at the wall. Her eyes devoid of any life, tears start trickling down from her eyes as a slow steady stream.
Again, I hold back the tears welling up in my eyes, seeing my two best friends in such a horrible state, it makes me wonder what happened.
That's when I remember.
"Ellie!" I call out her name with the little voice I have left in me.
"Ellie… What happened?" I ask.
"They're dead…"
Her answer caught me off guard.
"What did you sa-"
"They're dead... A giant rock broke of that thing and ploughed through the apartment like an arrow growing through a paper."
I couldn't believe it. Ellie's parents were the kindest people you would ever meet. They were always smiling and joking around; always working hard and giving back to the community. They were amazing people…
"Ellie, I-"
Before I could say anything else her eyes filled up with even more tears. The horror in her eyes quickly became tears of despair. She just starts wailing. The sound of her cries makes me want to fall to my knees and break down with her, yet I still don't cry.
"Not now. Now is not the time to cry." I tell myself.
Instead, I go outside and asked around if anyone knew what was happening. I got the same response from everyone.
The world, has ended…
