"I hate you!" I screamed at my mom from inside my room and slammed the door. She made me so angry that I screamed at her. But whatever, she was just my mom so it's not like it mattered. I just wished she would let me go with Arian on his trip to England. During the week I did all my chores and homework, but when I asked all she said was that I would get kidnapped. As if that would ever really happen; she was too protective. Plus, Arian's parents were going to, so what was the problem?
Groaning, I fell back against my bed and closed my eyes. Maybe if I just slept all of this would be a dream, and when I woke up, she'd let me go. But that will never happen because my mom will never trust me.
Suddenly, I hear a tap on my window that wakes me up, and makes me notice that I fell asleep to begin with. When I look up at the window, I see a figure, but I'm not scared. It was only Tyler goofing off again, but I'm glad he came.
When I sit up and open the window, I can see Tyler's 'evil' grin, and I find myself grinning back. There was just something about knowing him that made me feel cool. No one else knew about him except me, and the only reason I knew him is because he decided to visit me after another fight with my mom. He had an awesome life with no parents and no rules- I'd give anything for that.
"Another fight with your mom?" he asked simply. Tyler had only said 'hello' to me once and told me he would never say 'goodbye' unless he meant it. I wasn't really for sure what that meant, but everything he said was like magic to me.
"Yeah, when are we not fighting?" I sighed. "She never lets me do anything."
Tyler just laughed and reached through the window to dig his knuckles into my hair. "Don't worry; you'll get out of here soon."
I smiled and laughed back as I always did. Tyler always made me feel better- no matter what. "I wish I could just go with you," I said, half joking and half serious.
Suddenly, Tyler's smile dropped into a surprised expression. "Really? You want to come?"
This took me by surprise too- he sounded serious. "Would you let me?" I asked, carefully. Tyler sometimes made jokes a lot that I didn't understand, and other times he had a strong temper. I did everything I could to stay on his good side.
"Of course," he answered, grinning again. "I was going to ask you one day because of how things are with your mom, but I thought you might be too chicken."
The name stuck me in a bad way, and I suddenly gained confidence that I could do this, "No way, I want to go today."
"Are you sure?" Tyler teased. "You won't be able to see your mommy anymore."
I rolled my eyes. "Just shut up and tell me what I need to do."
Tyler's grin widens. "Come outside."
Wanting to be brave, I smile back, and get off of my bed and walk to the door, but really my heart's pounding. What if I get caught? What if Tyler gets mad me and kicks me out of his group? No, that wouldn't happen. Tyler's my friend.
Shaking off my doubts, I open the door and sneak pass my parent's bedroom, making it to the stairs. As I slowly make my way down, I can see Tyler's figure through the window as he climbs down from my room. When I open the front door to great him, I get a good look at him for the first time.
He's a lot taller than I expected, about two feet or so, but I already knew he was older me. Tyler was thin and flexible, oblivious through the fact that he could climb houses. As always, his grin was stuck in such a way that it was his most striking feature, and all you could see of him when you closed your eyes.
"Are you ready?" Tyler asked, and I walked outside, closing the door behind me.
"Hells yeah," I answered quickly, and let Tyler lead the way.
I followed him into the trees and passed the houses, only looking back once. As we walked, I wondered if I'd ever miss my parents, but I could never imagine a moment where I'd missed the constant nagging of my mom or all the rules. This new life would be so much better, and I found myself wishing we could run there instead.
However, Tyler suddenly stopped in the middle of a thick patch of trees. From where we were standing I could hear the road and the cars passing by, and I wondered if he was just trying to remember where to go. But he didn't look like he was thinking about anything. "Tyler?" I asked. "Where do we go next?"
"We're here," he said, turning to me, grinning. I tried to understand, but I couldn't. So this was all a joke? Why would he drag me all the way out here just to say "just kidding, you can't go with me"? It was unfair, I wanted this more than anyone, and I felt myself getting angry.
Then, out of nowhere, I saw figures step out from behind the trees. At first, I was scared, but when I looked up Tyler, he didn't seem to be phased. "Are these your friends?" I asked him.
"You could say that," Tyler said, shrugging. "But I wouldn't."
Suddenly, one of the figures grabbed me from behind, and I instantly knew what was happening. I tried to get myself free of the figure's grasp, but as soon as I had the thought, another hand covered my mouth in nose. It wasn't long before I noticed that I had inhaled something from whatever was in the figure's hand, and the edges of my vision started to grow blurry, and my head felt dizzy.
"Goodbye, Kace," I heard Tyler say to me, and everything went dark.
