"No."
Bai Liu's voice sounded before Prime minister Bai could say anything. It was obvious he didn't want his delicate sister to end up with a psychopathic teacher like heavenly doctor Ming.
"Come back when you are in a sound mindset," said prime minister Bai calmly.
"Father!" yelled Bai Liu full of exasperation, "Why would you allow someone like him to be FeiFei's teacher!"
The emperor almost pulled the heavenly doctor out of the mansion before giving him a stern glance and warning him that he must not ever repeat the occurrences of the day.
Meanwhile, back in the garden Bai Liu was fighting with his father.
"Are you really going to allow FeiFei to study under him?" Bai Liu whined, "The man is basically a fraud and criminal!"
"It would be good for Feifei to learn medicine. She has always been sickly and I won't always be around to help her."
Bai Liu calmed down after hearing his father, but only a little. He still didn't trust heavenly doctor Ming despite his reputation as the best doctor in the kingdom.
But at the end of the day it was not his choice, it was his father's choice as to whether Bai Jingfei could be allowed to go and study medicine.
Bai Liu then realized that the authority didn't lie with prime minister Bai at all. It lay with Feifei!
So he sprinted off to Bai Jingfei's room like a maniac leaving his father stunned in the garden.
Prime minister Bai had a faint clue as to what Bai Liu was up to, but he knew that Bai Liu wouldn't be able to affect Bai Jingfei's choice in the end. Thus he walked to his study waiting for this conflict to be resolved.
Bai Liu on the other hand had already reached Bai Jingfei's room and knocked.
Inside the room, Bai Jingfei lay on her back, surrounded by pillows, munching on her candy. When she heard the knock her first instinct was to hide the candy jar under her pillow. And push the sack of candies further under her bed.
"Who is it?" she whispered.
"Feifei it's me, your brother"
Bai Jingfei sighed out of relief and walked over to the door to pull it open. The door was pretty heavy so she ended up pulling it open very slightly, and Bai Liu pushed the door open the rest of the way from outside.
She walked back over to her bed and giggled a little as she flopped back down specifically on to the pillow she had hidden her candy under.
Bai Liu sat on the stool next to her bed quietly. He was contemplating what his father had told him. Would it really benefit his sister to learn medicine under that rat?
He twiddled his thumbs for around 44 seconds before turning to the cave creature who was trying to finish that candy before Bai Liu noticed it.
As soon as he made eye contact she stopped sucking on the candy and stared at him innocently.
But if Bai Liu had looked closely enough he would've seen the bump in her cheek where the candy was sitting.
"Feifei, do you want to learn medicine?"
Bai Jingfei stared at Bai Liu looking incredibly confused. She had no clue as to where medicine had come up. Bai Jingfei nodded slowly, avoiding saying anything in fear of her candy showing.
Bai Liu felt his heart sink but deep inside he had known all along that his sister would want to.
Of course, Bai Jingfei wanted to study medicine because of what heavenly doctor Ming had said about marking up the prices. Bai Jingfei would love to mark up prices of weeds for a living too. Patients get cured and she gets extra money.
Win-win.
Bai Liu finally brought himself to ask, "why?".
Bai Jingfei had expected the conversation to end with her nod but was shocked when he asked her to elucidate. In that moment of shock she swallowed her candy.
Bai Jingfei felt like crying for two reasons.
Firstly, it was her favorite candy and it had gotten wasted just like that.
Secondly, the candy was stuck in her throat and she was choking.
Bai Liu thought he had scared Bai Jingfei and moved forward to rub her back. Soon Bai Jingfei swallowed the candy completely and looked at Bai Liu.
"Brother, I want to get stronger"
Bai Liu knew Bai Jingfei wanted to get stronger but didn't expect her to say it that frankly. He nodded and then decided to finish telling her the entire story.
"- So he wants to take you as a student"
Bai Jingfei felt overjoyed. She wanted to learn medicine to mark up prices and thus there was no one better for her to learn from than the master of marking up prices himself.
She smiled all wide and then jumped over to hug Bai Liu.
"Brother, I'm going to go tell father that I want to study under heavenly doctor Ming"
Bai Liu walked her out of the room and then watched Bai Jingfei's back as she skipped over to the study to tell their dad. He felt himself smile too.
'Maybe studying under that master will be good for her. It's not like we can't protect her if needed. Learning medicine might just allow her to be more independent after marriage…'
Bai Jingfei ran into the study and almost collided with prime minister Bai before she grinned at him and exclaimed "Papa! I want to study medicine!"
Prime minister Bai sat down and told Bai Jingfei to calm down. He then, in front of Bai Jingfei, wrote a letter addressed to the heavenly doctor.
He handed the letter to a guard to send over to the heavenly doctor before slumping back into his chair with a yawn. He pulled out a small necklace and handed it over to Bai Jingfei.
"This was your mother's from back when she was a child… Study hard, Feifei, make us proud."
