Chapter 8 - It's Getting Hot in Here

"Do you have a reservation?" The expressionless man at the front desk asked without looking up from his screen.

"Y-yes. My last name is Sullivan, Vincent Sullivan." Vince laughed a little thinking of a certain British secret agent from an old film.

"It says here that you registered with fire as your power- is that correct? We have a lot of people select a less common power just to get into the facility sooner. It never works. I need to see your POWER watch to confirm," he said finally glancing up.

Vincent hesitated at first because it felt almost like he was being threatened which was a weird thought considering he knew he was telling the truth about his power. He quickly brought his arm forward to flash the watch screen.

"Good. Here is a map of the facility showing you where your training locations are. The rooms for fire based powers are sparsely populated but you will find others in there. Any injuries incurred will be treated at no cost in the onsite infirmary but do not accidentally kill yourself. There will be no unauthorized fighting in this facility especially with the use of your power. You are free to watch the training of others but you can not enter their rooms. Understand?" The receptionist said.

"I understand" Vince said as he took the facility map and went on his way to the closest elevator. He stepped in with three others that have already selected their floors. He pressed the button for the 6th floor which had fire and shadow rooms. He received glances from others on the elevator as they wondered who this regularly dressed person was going to the 6th floor. There were new people coming out with powers every day so even with the low likelihood of them being fire or shadow, it was still bound to happen. It doesn't mean they will have any actual talent with their skill.

Vince got to his floor and stepped out of the elevator into the main hallway. The training rooms were all varying sizes. Some small enough for a single person while others were 50 yards long with multiple people practicing in them. They were closed in with thick glass walls so you can monitor all training. The only exception were some of the shadow rooms where there were blackout curtains hung up to prevent any light from going in to them. This floor had no windows with natural light so it must have been one with concrete walls that he saw from the outside. There was only one shadow power person Vince could see. They were sitting in small lit room where a metal disk projected a circular shadow onto a table. The guy looked like he was in his early twenties and wore all black. The only identifying characteristic of his facade were his long black hair and extraordinarily pale skin. He watched for a second as the circular shadow on the table began to spread out until it filled the entire training space turning it pitch black. A few seconds passed before the light instantly came back revealing this pale man staring in the direction of Vince. It was an unnerving feeling to say the least so Vince quickly made his way to a single person room.

One side of the room had pieces of paper, wood, metal, glass, and a metal tea kettle filled with water. This side was to test your ability to burn/melt materials as well as bring water to a boil or even instantly turn it to steam if your skill was powerful enough. The other side was filled with devices and materials to extinguish a flame. Probably to test resistance but also to keep an unpredictable flame under control. Practicing a fire based skill can be extremely dangerous so it is best to have all precautions ready. Vince decided to start easy so he grabbed a piece of paper, held it above his hand and calmly said "Flame". The small dancing flame appeared in his hand and quickly connected to the piece of paper. It was reminiscent to holding a lighter underneath the paper. He sat the paper down to finish burning while he looked over into the large room where others were training.

One woman was able to raise her hand in the direction of a training dummy and it was instantly engulfed in flames. An older gentleman could create a perfectly spherical ball of fire and send it flying across the room like a baseball until it finally hit a target and scorched a perfectly round hole. Finally, there was a man wearing dark jeans and a black leather jacket with a flame patch on the back. He was standing there watching the others until they finished their onslaught on the dummies. When they finished, he stepped forward and assumed a strong stance. He slowly raised his hand directing it at a dummy. Nothing seemed to happen at first but suddenly the dummy began to catch fire. They were built to withstand fire attacks so the others in the room watched in disbelief. While the first continued to burn, the guy lifted his other arm and all of the dummies began to catch fire. The temperature in the room must have been unbearable as all the others in the room ran for the door. As soon as they reached it, temperature limits were reached for the room and it was locked down to protect the facility. A second later, the liquid nitrogen cooling system turned on to immediately cool the room and a sprinkler system doused out all the flames. His display of power had come to a close. The doors finally unlocked and the room was evacuated as everyone walked out wet and freezing except for the guy in the leather jacket. He glanced over at Vince who was still sitting there stunned by what happened as the monster of a man began to laugh.
