Brooke's uncle lived in a cabin. It was a huge cabin just around town. Dr Shields welcomed both boys into his humble abode which was quite messy,immediately sending the message that he was single.
"So to what do I owe such a sudden visit from you boys?" Dr Shields asked after offering them some soda. "Uncle Ash,Jeremy's got a problem. He's suddenly developed superpowers. He can control air and run with the speed of light,plus he heals pretty quickly." Brooke explained. "I'm gonna need a detailed explanation of what you're talking about." Dr Ashton Shields requested and Jeremy went on to narrate his experiences all over again.
Dr Shields nodded and told them to follow him. He took them to another large room which happened to be his lab. He had a fully equipped lab with all the tools and devices they would need.
"First,I'll need a blood sample." Dr Ash said and went to a table and brought back a syringe. Jeremy looked away,he was scared of needles.
Dr Shields took his blood sample quickly and proceeded to study it and perform some tests. He also took a saliva and urine sample. Lastly, Jeremy underwent a full body X-ray.
Both friends watched some TV in the living room while they waited for the results.
About two hours later,Dr Shields returned from his lab with the results, he had a calm expression.
"I've made a fantastic discovery today and I can finally prove my point to the board,all thanks to your friend. Your friend is a mutant." Dr Shields stated.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Jeremy questioned.
"It simply means that you're not a normal human anymore. From the tests and X-ray I've conducted, I've found that all your genes have been mutated and this has caused your body morphology to change. Your DNA has been warped by some kind of mutagen, instead of the usual wrapped nucleotides in the form of a twisted ladder, yours have taken the shape of a triangle. Your whole respiratory system has changed,even your skeletal system too. In fact,it's too overwhelming to explain. It's like you've developed super genes." Dr Ashton explained, sounding fascinated.
"And how is that good?" Brooke had to ask. "It's good because it proves I was right, this is the discovery of a lifetime. Wait till I tell the board." Dr Shields said and grabbed his phone but Jeremy super sped and snatched it away.
"No,we're not telling anyone. This conversation ends in this room. I've seen what the government does to things they find 'fascinating'. I don't want to be anyone's lab rat or a guinea pig. I just want a normal life with my mum,I never asked for this." Jeremy said with more emotion than intended.
"You were destined for great things boy,whatever was injected into your system should have killed you but it didn't. Instead, it made you stronger. We'll keep it a secret if you really want,I guess my big discovery will have to wait. I'm just glad that I was right about it all along." Dr Ashton said, resting his hand reassuringly on Jeremy's shoulder and the boy smiled. "Thanks." Jeremy said and Dr Ashton nodded before going back to his lab.
"So,now that we basically know that you're a mutant and you have superpowers, what next?" Brooke asked and Jeremy slightly glared at him.
"Stop calling me that my name is Jeremy or Jerry at least. Calling me a mutant makes me feel like an abomination." Jeremy retorted, somewhat offended.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way. It's just that finding out you have superpowers is a little overwhelming." Brooke said after apologizing.
"If you feel that way,how do you think I'm feeling right now? I have to keep this all a secret from my mum,it's going to be the hardest thing but I'll try." Jeremy said trying to sound strong.
"I know you can do it,but by the way,about my question, so what now?"Brooke questioned
"Well,I think I'll do what every guy with superpowers do in the comics." Jeremy stated.
"Become a villain?" Brooke teased and Jeremy snorted. "No stupid, become a superhero. How are you still my best friend?" Jeremy couldn't believe why Brooke was like this.
"You know me,I try." Brooke said and Jeremy landed a playful punch on his shoulder.
"I best be leaving now,mum must be worried sick about my whereabouts. I forgot to call so I could let her know,I'd be late." Jeremy said looking at his wristwatch.
"Let's inform uncle Ash first." Brooke suggested and they went into the lab. Dr Ashton was reading some paperwork, probably, Jeremy's test results.
"Dr Shields I'd like to leave now,it's getting late. But before I go,I'd like to thank you for helping me understand and also,for not revealing my secret." Jeremy thanked,full of gratitude.
"It's nothing kiddo,I should be the one thanking you. I've made a discovery. Although, studying your results have made me realize something. Your new body morphology allows for you to have a variety of powers,mostly air related due to how highly developed your respiratory system has become." Dr Ashton explained, dumbfounding the youngsters.
"So you're saying I may have more powers aside from healing quickly, superspeed and aerokinesis?"Jeremy was truly surprised.
" Precisely. "Dr Ashton replied with a nod. " Um... Powers like what?"Brooke quickly questioned, curious.
"I don't know,I can't tell. We'll just have to wait to see them unravel. Have you thought of what you'll do with your new abilities?" Dr Ashton asked before looking up from his study table.
"Yes,I wanna become a superhero." Jeremy said confidently but Dr Ashton laughed.
"What's so funny?" Jeremy couldn't help asking. "I was thinking you'd say join the fire department but isn't suddenly wanting to become a superhero just because you have superpowers a little too rash? Being a superhero is no easy job,if you watch your cartoons properly, you'll notice they actually have to train and master their powers. If you don't, you most likely will end up either hurting yourself, your loved ones or you'll be exposed." Dr Ashton explained and Jeremy thought about it.
"But I want to put my powers into good use, I'll train if that's what it takes." Jeremy sounded really determined.
"Are you sure about this son? The world is a dangerous place and protecting others isn't as easy as you think." Dr Ashton reminded and Jeremy concurred.
"I'm sure."
"OK then,meet me here tomorrow, at say 8AM. Tomorrow's Saturday, so it shouldn't be a problem right?" Dr Ashton said.
"Sure,thank you so much Dr Ashton but I have to leave now." Jeremy thanked once more and super sped to his home, he was determined to pursue the path he had chosen for himself, no matter what it took.
