The richest person in the town would obviously have a strict security and I was not skilled enough, well not at all to rob a bank. So I decided to rob a middle class family.
I started to practice. I thought of robbing Mr Wilbert. He belonged to a middle class family and his possessions were not very valuable but we could make a nice amount of money after selling them except… He possessed a very valuable diamond ring.
My aim was to steal the ring. But what came in my way was something I had never expected.
I broke into the house. I discovered that I forgot to bring a rope and also all the doors and the windows were locked. It took me about 15 minutes to figure out a window from which I can get into the house. I turned on the torch. The condition of the room made me know that it was the store room. I opened the door quietly and then entered the drawing room. There, I could see a large wooden cupboard in one of the corners of the room. I covered the portion of the torch where the light comes with a thin cloth so that the light would be dim and it would be difficult to notice me.
I searched the whole cupboard then noticed a small box where we keep rings. I opened the box hoping to find the ring but the box was empty. Suddenly the box fell down making a loud noise. I quickly ran towards the room, Mr Wilbert noticed me and he caught me by my arm. He then caught the collar of my t-shirt and shook me until my head went blurry. After that he slapped me with all his might. Finally after five minutes of the beating he spoke, " You crap, give me my ring, how dare …" I interrupted him, "I don't have it."
"Liar!"
"I swear! I came here to steal it but I found out that the box where you keep the ring was empty."
"What? Who stole it then?"
"I don't know."
Mr. Wilbert left my collar, sat on the couch, held his head with both of his hands and started smoking a cigar. I could run away but I didn't. I stood still, opened my mouth to say that I would help him find the culprit but couldn't say it.
I swore to myself that I will never get involved in a robbery ever again. I finally spoke, "I.. I will help you find the thief of the ring."
Mr. Wilbert didn't say anything. Thinking that he didn't hear me I gathered guts to say it again, "I...I understand that the ring was your valuable possession so I..I will help find the thief at least help to do so."
"What can you do?"
"I am nineteen years old but I look small when it comes to height so people think I am a small child. I can be very useful to you in finding the ring. Please let me help you. I want to show you that I am sorry for what I did today."
"I don't think you will be able to find the thief but still you can be of some help."
"Thank you sir, I will not break the confidence you place in me. So, where do you think the robber could have come from?"
"Well, there are two ways, one is the storeroom window and the other is the back door."
I felt how stupid I was not to check the back door and came in from there I wouldn't have to waste my fifteen minutes.
I asked Mr. Wilbert if I could examine both the places. He agreed.
I examined the storeroom. I couldn't find anything so I went to the back door. I looked around for quite a while and at last found a shoe.
It was made up of brown leather and had black laces. This was a big clue for me and now it would help me find the thief.
