Kaylee woke up the next day feeling tired and sick. Her temperature was really high as her nose was blocked and she had a hard time breathing. She felt her head being really heavy as she tried to figure out where she was. After a few minutes, she realised that she was in her grandmother's bedroom although her grandmother was nowhere to be seen. She had lied down like a log on the comfortable bed. As she looked around she noticed that she was covered in a pink comforter with her legs as straight as a rod together.
The room was dimly lit but after a few minutes, everything which she saw clearly could now be seen as a blur. She rested her head back on the fluffy white pillow and stared patiently on the flower-filled wall across her. Tears rolled down her eyes as she felt her body heat increasing and extremely uncomfortable because of the silky comforter covering her. she took a deep breath in, closed her eyes and made her palm into a fist.
She heard each sound differently, the birds chirped at a great volume in her ears, the children going to school seemed to be screaming at her while laughing, the blender at the neighbours' house was heard at the greatest amplitude one could ever imagine. But all of it was just the fever.
After a few minutes of hearing multiple sounds differently, she threw the comforter away as she tried to wake up. She picked up her body with a lot of strength as she tried to stand up but her knees gave way as they wobbled whenever she stood. She then sat back down on the bed and heaved as if she was trying to carry an anchor with her bare hands. She took quite some time sitting on the bed without her head thinking about anything specific at all.
She pulled herself together as she tried to stand up again. Her breath rasped and she put her hands on the wall. She held on against the wall while dragging her feet forward to the door of the room when her eyes met with the clock. When she saw that it was 8 o clock she screamed in a high pitched voice, "Oh my god!.... Am late for school... Grandma, why didn't you, wake me up?"
Her grandmother quickly walked into the room with a ladle in her hand and stood looking at her granddaughter struggling against the wall. "Because you look terribly sick and weak. You staying home today and so am I."
"What about....your work? Isn't your... boss going to blow up?"
"Oh my god. That would be nice. seeing my boss blow up into pieces. But I already warned him today am taking an off. So sit down right here and eat your porridge." Her grandmother said as she walked away from her room while offering support for Kaylee to walk. She held her waist and slid Kaylee arm on her shoulder. She continued helping Kaylee until they reached the living great-great her grandmother simply rested Kaylee on the blue couch and covered her with the green quilt with a huge round symbol on top of it.
Kaylee shrank herself into the foetal position and rested her head on the couch arm. Her grandmother quickly went to the kitchen and came back to her with a bowl of porridge on top of a brown tray and rested it on the tea table in the middle of the room. She then sat on the right side of the couch where Kaylee had rested her head. bloodline her on the head as Kaylee woke up in a horrendous state trying to figure out where the spoon was.
Kaylee had her breakfast with a lot of hardships and shaking of her hand but her grandmother helped her and she managed to finish the whole bowl with her grandmother nagging at her. After finishing the gigantic bowl her grandmother took it away and let her rest on the couch. She slept for a few hours before waking up. As she woke up she looked at the small alarm clock on the tea table right in front of her and saw that it was 10:15.
She felt more active, more energised not for a marathon but better than what she was feeling in the morning. She saw her grandmother coming out of the kitchen wearing a colourful long-sleeved shirt with a pair of grey pants. Kaylee looked at her in awe, she had never seen her grandmother wearing pants of any kind unless it was for something important. Her graduation, her awarding ceremony, basically all the important occasions that Kaylee invited her grandmother to.
Her grandmother looked at her sitting on the couch seemingly in surprise at what her grandmother had worn but she decided not to note her response and ordered Kaylee to go and take a bath.
"Kaylee honey, go take a bath. You smell like soup and old clothes, and you need to replenish yourself. Am old but I don't even look old unlike you..... Some people think am still in my thirties. And am not even surprised." She said with a wide smile on her face as she gazed at Kaylee who was giggling at her grandmothers' remarks.
After freshening up she went to her grandmother in the living room and sat on the right side of the same couch that she had slept on. She instantly got an episode. It was about her grandmother talking to her about her abilities and how sad she felt. She saw her grandmother and felt her heart and mind in distress while knowing that her grandmother was worried and would try every means possible to remove such abilities from Kaylee.
Even though Kaylee knew what her grandmother was about to do, the seriousness of the situation, the immense responsibility coming after her with these abilities she wanted to avoid talking about her abilities at all costs. She hesitated, was her grandmother going to hate her for it? or leave her. She wondered for quite some time as her grandmother sat down on the other side of the couch staring directly into her granddaughter's eyes who had drifted away into a deep state of unconsciousness. But her grandmother did not bother her granddaughter who was in a world of oblivion, she simply let her be.
After a few minutes, patience could no longer hold onto her grandmother and she lamented while holding her Kaylee's right hand, "Am sorry Kaylee,"
"Why grandma? It's not your fault, you know that I can... I can see the future. And am.... sure you would never want me to get such abilities. Would you, grandma?"
"No, honey... I would never want anybody to get these abilities. Especially you, Kay. But Kay since when? Since when have you been seeing it?"
"Since the start of the week. But I could not even keep a secret. I know it's supposed to be a secret to everyone.. but I could not just hold it in anymore grandma. It got out of control," Kaylee said while sighing and gazed at the floor.
"It's okay Sweetie. I feel very good since you told me about it. But am going to have to tell you not to tell anybody else. Abilities such as these....they" she breathed in and let Kaylee right hand down as she stared at the alarm clock on the table "..... they lead to problems. And they can never be removed from the bloodline. My great-great-grandmother tried to have the medicine to stop her children, and her bloodline from getting such abilities, but she and everybody else knew that the medicine would eventually wear out. And one of the females from the bloodline would get the abilities once more and continue with them. It just happened to be you. But you should never feel unlucky honey, am here for you. Always and forever."
"Always and forever, grandma."
"One more thing, once the abilities start it only takes some time before you start feeling weird things."
"How? What things are you talking about?"
"When you see someone in your episodes, you're going to feel his emotions and thoughts and know his deepest fears."
Kaylee listened carefully and remembered once more what it was like to feel and think what Justus was feeling during the accident. Her mind drifted away to when Justus was soaring through the sky with a lot of fear in his heart and how much he wished to apologise to Ricardo. She was interrupted midway in her daydreaming by her grandmother who was continuing with the seemingly endless conversation.
"And again Kaylee. You're not going to be able to save people all the time. It's practically impossible. People with such abilities or any kind of abilities have a hard time earning trust from people and when they do earn the trust of someone they lose it when something bad happens. This is why you should not warn people about the future. If you can help them then do it with secrecy but you can never trust them with your secret abilities."
"Of course grandma, I will guard my secret with my life. and only help when am needed. But Grandma. There are other people with such abilities, right? where are they? And how can I even find them?"
"I don't know honey. I really don't know, but what I do know is that they definitely exist. And they are probably amongst your generation and they are all women. Or young ladies such as yourself, Kay"
Her grandmother smiled at her as Kaylee returned the smile with her mind continuing to be preoccupied with everything that was going on. Just suddenly she had an episode.
She was in a stance for a minute before saying to her grandmother, "Grandma, Anna's coming. She's coming over to talk. She's gonna knock in the next few minutes so am gonna go upstairs now. Okay?"
Her grandmother looked at her even though she knew of her abilities she still marvelled and could not believe whatever was going on. But she held herself together and replied to her granddaughter in an understanding manner. "Yeah, sure honey. You can go upstairs."
Kaylee rushed through the spiralling wooden stairs and reached her room. She closed the door in a rush and sat down on her thick bed while facing the ceiling. She wondered about the other people who had supernatural abilities. Were they fine? What kind of supernatural powers do they even have? Seeing the past, or reading someone's mind. Or even erasing someone's mind. The possibilities are endless, infinite and unlimited. But would they really use their abilities for good, would they really care about what the world needs? And most importantly would the feeble and puny humans who are normal ever accept them as supernatural? Or would they be hunted and killed like medieval times?
