Chapter 5 - Escalating amity.

Kaylee got ready for school in the same type of clothes despite her grandmother making fun of her sense of fashion. She was eagerly waiting for the present her grandmother was about to give her and rushed downstairs to talk to her grandmother about it. "Grandma,...so am gonna go to school now. Is that okay?" Kaylee declared with a grin from ear to ear.

"Okay then.... do you need something?"

"No, nothing. Just letting you know."

Her grandmother laughed loudly then enunciated her words, "You....can....go...Kay"

Kaylee wiped the grin off her face as she turned towards the door, her grandmother instantaneously stopped her. "Wait...I bought you a little something. It's in a turquoise paper bag in my room, could you get it?"

Kaylee dashed to her grandmother's room and found the paper bag under the vanity table. She grabbed it and gave it to her grandmother who was seated at their comfy blue sofas. Her grandmother opened it and a present was tied in a scarlet-red wrapping paper while shimmering with glitters. Kaylee opened the gift in a few seconds before holding it out to the vast airspace.

It was a long lustrous pink satin dress with its armlet filled with flowers. Its bodice was vast with no other decorations on it. Kaylee gasped at the present, she was filled with joy at the expensive dress her grandmother bought her and tears started flowing from her eyes. She quickly hugged her grandmother who was smiling widely at her granddaughters' response. As she held her granddaughter she said to her in a sweet low voice," I love you, Kay. Always and forever."

"I love you too, grandma."

"Okay, you are gonna get late for school you should go now."

Kaylee left the house while yelling goodbye and shutting the door behind her. As she was walking to her bike she saw Anna also closing her front door. They greeted each other as Anna went on her way to work in a taxi and Kaylee rode her bike to school.

When she reached school she found Rhoda and Ricardo waiting for her at the school grounds on a bench. She started walking towards them when she got an episode. It took a few seconds as she reached the bench they were in her episode was over. She joined them as they started doing their project. A few minutes for the first period to start they left the grounds and headed to class. They agreed to meet during lunchtime to continue with their projects. "Wait, do we have to meet at the school dining hall? How about we meet in the laboratory? The old one, at the end of the hallway. It doesn't have a lot of people passing around through there. We can do our work in peace, it is quieter there we can do our project there," Kaylee said as she hoped for a positive response.

"Yeah, sure! It's even better," Rhoda answered.

Ricardo just nodded his head while smiling. Kaylee bid her acquaintances goodbye and proceeded to class. As she was going to class, she remembered her episode on the school grounds before joining up with Rhoda and Ricardo. The episode was about Clare and Sarah embarrassing Ricardo as a frail man in the whole school cafeteria as Rhoda tried to stop them her food was thrown to the floor. She wanted to avoid all inconveniences that could happen to them.

She paid attention to all her classes that from morning till midday, so much that even Miss McAlester complimented her in front of the whole class as she felt proud of her achievement of coping with new things. She was still wondering why her supernatural abilities kept on showing up with no specific pattern. But she ignored it and concentrated on other things that seemed more important at that moment. She hoped that things would work themselves out.

When the lunch bell rang everyone took their bags and left the class not feeling disturbed that Miss McAlester was still talking to them. Kaylee waited for a few minutes before leaving the classroom. This is because she wanted to give the gigantic crowds time to disperse before moving onto her locker.

Miss McAlester who was at the front of the class called Kaylee to the table and smiled brightly. She then lamented in a high pitched tone, "You got in. You got in, Kaylee. DAU agreed to sponsor you for your university. Dream Achieved University agreed!!....."

"What? Really, oh my god! That's amazing. I can't even.....Wow! I made it."

"You really worked hard for this Kaylee, you deserve it. Congratulations." Miss McAlester said as she patted Kaylee's shoulders.

Kaylee was buoyed with the news. She finally got in, she only just had to pass her finals for her position to be secured. She felt extremely pleased with herself. It had her dream for nearly ten years to enter DAU since it was the school in which her parents had learned in.

She was looking quite happy as she walked to the laboratory at the end of the hallway in a slow manner with her head tilted down to look at the messy floor filled with mud and shoeprints. Rhoda came out of the laboratory and curiously looked at her, then asked," Are you okay? We have been waiting for you for a long time now. And you seem to be lost in your own world. Are you smiling? What happened to you?"

"Nothing, importantly let's go finish the project," she bellowed.

They started walking to the room and went to the last table on which Ricardo was seated while holding a glass jar full of spiders. He looked at the two girls and stopped tapping the glass jar. The girls sat down on opposite sides as Kaylee took a deep breath. Rhoda looked at Ricardo and shrugged at Kaylee's behaviour. They exchanged a few glances before Kaylee noticed. She looked at both of them then said happily, "I've been accepted in DAU."

Rhoda and Ricardo gasped as they stood up from their seats to hug Kaylee. Kaylee was buoyed with the humble gesture. She had never thought of having friends but the ones she had barely known for two days were supportive of her which made her happy. After spending a few minutes talking about DAU they continued with their projects while each held a sandwich in their hands.

After at least forty minutes of doing their biology project, they stopped. They started talking about how they would celebrate Kaylee's achievements. "We should decide on where to go to celebrate, don't you think?" asked Rhoda with a grin on her face.

"Yeah, definitely. We should celebrate your achievement, Kaylee," answered Ricardo.

"No, it's fine. I actually don't need a celebration. Plus I don't wanna impose on anyone, and my seat has not even been secured yet." Kaylee muttered.

"Your joking, right? Do you know how hard it is to get into DAU? I mean you have to study your whole life to even think about entering DAU. But you made it. With a scholarship. If that doesn't deserve recognition, what does?" Rhoda added.

"She's right you know. Let us do something for you. Even if it's just coffee and cake to celebrate your scholarship. And plus you are definitely going to secure that position. I believe in you," Ricardo mumbled as he made a thumbs up.

"What about we go to Cafe Mocha, the one near the school to have cake tomorrow. How about it? Is it okay for the both of you?" Rhoda said in anticipation.

They all agreed to it without hesitation. The lunch break had nearly finished as students proceeded to their respective clubs. It wasn't long before school finished for the day and once again everyone went back home.

Kaylee went to get her old bike outside school and waved goodbye to Rhoda and Ricardo who were waiting patiently for their cars are the parking area. She cycled away with a huge smile as she thought of her grandmother's reaction to her fantastic about DAU. The sun was barely setting when she reached home. She threw her bike on the pavement as she ran towards the front door.

She swung the door open and ran to the kitchen to find her grandmother who was busy peeling potatoes. "Grandma!! I did it....I made it. I made it into DAU...." she said as she embraced her grandmother. After a few seconds of thinking about it, her grandmother finally got it and hugged back her daughter.

"I knew you would make it, you are definitely my granddaughter. I never doubted you even once," she said in enthusiasm.

Kaylee giggled as her grandmother kept praising her, she then asked her to invite Anna over to their house for dinner after washing up. She hastily freshened up and went over to Anna's house to ask her to come over for dinner.

"Of course, I would love to," Anna accepted.

That night they had a lovely dinner together with Anna on a lovely candlelit table stuffed with a turkey and gravy. Their house was brimming with laughter and joy. After the dinner, Anna congratulated Kaylee again for her achievements as she went back to her house. She bid farewell and thanked them for the lovely meal. Kaylee cleaned the table and washed the dishes before joining her grandmother in the living room.

She sat on the blue couch near her grandmother and informed her of her plans to go to a cafe the next day with her friends. "What? Do you have friends? Wow, that is also good news you could have shared with me during dinner," she said while smirking. She liked joking with her granddaughter about petty things. Kaylee looked at her earnestly before her grandmother continued. "You can go, sweetheart. Just be sure to go back to school after it, okay?"

That night Kaylee slept with extreme happiness, she was overfilled with joy. She had friends who cared about her, her grandmother was always with her and she had supernatural abilities. Although her abilities did not have a certain way of being controlled, she was still happy about it. She slept soundly that night not knowing that whatever was in store for her was about to ruin her life forever.
