"Kaylee,.....Kaylee!" bellowed Miss McAlester who at this point was frustrated by Kaylee's daydreaming. "Are you even listening to what am saying? This is your final year, guys you better start concentrating or your not going to get the perfect universities for yourselves," she continued.
Kaylee stopped listening when she started speaking up. She was concentrating in her world, her world was filled with sorcery potions and enchantments. She pondered upon it until the lesson ended. She had not reached a certain conclusion while striding out of class but she started heading towards the library in her free period. The unlit extensive hallway was once again as busy as a perpetual motion machine if there ever was one. She started moving at a snail's pace as she moved an inch or two in the humongous crowd. She made her way to the secluded library in which people had not fully fathomed its benefit but she thanked them for that. Since she had developed quite the liking to sitting alone.
She sighed and sat down while removing her purple sweater with specks of lint on it. She kept her one-sided archaic bag on the chair handle. She heaved a sigh and looked around the massive library which was empty and calm. The wooden table she was on was loaded with fashion magazines. They seemed to be very alluring but Kaylee was neither interested nor concerned about the playful magazines. She simply moved them to one end of the table using both her hands and rested her forehead on the pinewood table and closed her eyes.
The peaceful atmosphere and setting were disrupted by a certain pushing and shoving in the far end of the vast library. Kaylee immediately woke up and looked puzzled. 'It's the library people.... can't we just be quiet for a moment, she thought. But she could never have voiced her opinions to others hence she kept her distance. She always observed the one rule of the library which was silence and was quite astonished by people who did not. It was the only rule in the library but most of the people did not follow it. She ignored the rough noises as probably a book fell.
She then stood up and started looking for a math book in distress, she remembered the question which she was thinking about in the morning and felt futile. She proceeded to the far end of the ginormous library to get the book when suddenly there he was.
The naive little boy, Ricardo who looked like he was terrified, and horrified by the situation. He had curly tawny hair and his brown beady eyes were facing the ground. He was kneeling on the terrazzo floor with his small hands on his protruding knees as Justus, his oppressor was sitting on the library table looking directly at him.
Milk was spilt on the terrazzo floor where Ricardo was kneeling, as Justus asked the naive boy, to take care of his behaviour and to shut his mouth up. Kaylee was surprised not by the fact that she just witnessed bullying in a twenty-first-century school filled with anti-bullying pamphlets and the perpetrator was actually the head of the anti-bullying club. But she was astonished by the fact that she knew what was going to happen.
She heard a low gasp right behind her as she slowly tilted her head to face whoever was holding on to her brown shirt. She was baffled by the action and proceeded by gently moving away from the class president who had sneaked up on her. "We have to do something about it," she lamented in a chocked voice.
Still bemused Kaylee looked at Rhoda, the class president and wondered what she was doing creeping behind her. "Am going to complain to the school and get him suspended, "Rhoda said in a reassuring voice. She turned back and walked steadily towards the glass door and turned back to Kaylee and said in a low voice, "Are you coming, Kaylee?."
"No.....am not coming, am kind of busy with a project," whispered Kaylee.
"Oh, then what are you doing on the math section"
"Just looking, if there are new books or something"
Rhoda went back on her way as Kaylee slowly dragged her feet back to the table she was seating on. She continued spending the rest of the day, wondering, pondering and questioning her nature. She knew something was weird but the ability to see the future, that was a whole different kind of topic.
The tiring day ended as Kaylee quickly went back home. Before leaving the school she heard that Justus was suspended. She cycled back home but her mind was too cluttered and she did not even notice her neighbour coming out of her black vanguard with her hands full once more. She washed up and sat at the table as her grandmother prepared dinner.
After the hearty mash potatoes meal with greens (which she did not enjoy). She washed the few dishes and went to sit with her grandmother. As she sat down she looked at her grandmother earnestly then rested her head on her lap while shrinking herself to a foetal position.
"What's wrong honey? Are you okay? Did something happen at school today," her grandmother uttered while she patted her consolingly on her forehead towards her black silky hair.
"Grandma, do you believe in supernatural people, as they can probably see things. Like fortune tellers."
"Yes, I do believe in the supernatural. Once when I was young, not much younger than you are. My grandmother told me that her grandmother used to see the future. At that point, I did not believe her. But she had never said a lie before in her life. So I asked around and turns out she was right. In ancient times people could see the future and the past. One of the ladies could see ghosts and the souls of those who had died. There were different kinds of people but most of them were murdered. They were called witches and were threatened to be killed. Most of them ran away from the communities. It is all just so sad, my great grandmother had to grow up without a mother for the fear of losing her life. She also had to take a certain medicine to make sure her children never get those powers. Although it was rumoured that once the medicine wears out a woman in the generations to come would have supernatural abilities." narrated her grandmother.
"Wow!", Kaylee exclaimed.
"Yeah, very surprising indeed. But the good thing is that we do not worry about that, it never gonna happen in these days and time."
Kaylee forced a smile as she looked at her grandmother who was euphoric about talking with her granddaughter.
Kaylee parents had died when Kaylee was 2 years old. The only thing they left behind was a small house in Lakeville. Kaylee was raised by her grandparents when two years ago, her grandfather also died. For Kaylee's grandmother watching Kaylee being happy was the most exhilarating thing for her.
They went back to their rooms at seven in the evening. Since they always woke up early. Kaylee kissed her grandmother goodnight on her forehead and rushed through the stairs to her room. She locked the door behind her and sat on the desk with the desktop. After thinking about it for a minute she typed, 'precognitive abilities' then 'paranormal' on the searching engines but she found nothing to be of help. She continued researching about the paranormal when she experienced it again.
She saw images but this time it took longer and even gave her time to recognise who was in it. She saw heavy rain, and a huge car, lighting was hitting and then suddenly it hit a tall tree and the tree fell on the unknown car. A tall woman wearing a red coat came out of her house while looking immensely sad. She could not disperse her thoughts this time. The woman she saw was her clumsy neighbour miss Anna. Kaylee stood up and shut down every light as she went near the small window in her four-sided room. She opened the shutters and silently sat down on the bed beside her.
A few moments later it started raining, while Kaylee was wide awake. A few hours later she was sleeping peacefully on her comfortable bed when she heard a loud bang. She immediately woke up and sat straight on her bed. Her eyes were wide opened, she deep down already knew what had happened but that did not stop her from looking through the window to verify her concerns.
She could not believe her eyes, she rubbed them with her index fingers to make sure she wasn't dreaming but it as real as it could get. She continued looking through the window as Miss Anna came out of the door with her red coat while folding her arms. She looked frustrated and tired with whatever was going on. She went back into her house and called for the authorities.
As Kaylee just sat and gasped at the incident. Her fatigue was drained and she just sat motionlessly in her room with nothing to say or even think about. She looked at the round watch on her wall and although it was dark she was able to tell that it was one in the morning.
