When I saw his face, I felt anger rise in me. Just seeing him was enough to make me angry.
- What the hell are you doing here, asparagus face? (I said to him)
- Oh no, you're not going to start that again (Olivia said exasperatedly) ... It's starting to get annoying with your constant arguments ... Anyway, I'm in the car, join me when you're done arguing.
Olivia got into the car. Cam hadn't answered me yet, but he looked at me as if he knew I was going to say that.
- So? (I said) What do you...
- What do you think, you viper (cut me off)... you can't help it, can you? Can't you stop spitting your venom just for a minute? Look, I don't have time for this tonight. If you want to, get in the car, but if you don't want to, I won't force you. Just run home.
Having no choice, I got into the car and glared at him. Apparently he was amused by my act; he got into the car and started up with a big smile on his face. His smile was like that of a soldier who had just won a battle. Yes, a battle, but not the war.
When we arrived at the house, everyone was already at the table for dinner, so we joined them after we had washed up. Missie was there too.
- Hi Missie (said Cam)
- It's been a while (Olivia added)
- I've been really busy lately (replied Missie)
- Don't worry! (I said) We totally understand. We've been busy too, with classes and volunteering and...
- Yes, you're busy, we know that (Cam cut me off abruptly)
- And what is that supposed to mean, Cam? (I replied)
- It seemed pretty clear to me though (said Cam)
- Shit (said uncle Julius, banging his fist on the table for Cam and I to be silent, then he got up and left the table with his food)... it has become impossible to have a peaceful dinner in this house.
- Good for you! (Olivia said angrily) You two can be happy... you scared off Uncle Julius and spoiled my appetite at the same time. (She also left the table and went up to the room)
- She's right, you know? (Riggie said with an air of annoyance) We're getting tired of hearing you argue all day long.
- Plus it's stupid (added M.C.), it's like two kids fighting over a lollipop.
Aunt Cassie tried to change the subject because everyone was tense except Missie who didn't understand anything at all.
- So Cam (said Aunt Cassie), how did your training go?
- As usual (said Cam) and since you mention it I would like to invite Mr. Flaherty to dinner tomorrow night.
- Yes, that's fine with me (said Aunt Cassie)
- Sorry to interrupt (I said), but practice for what? And who is Mr. Flaherty?
- Basketball practice of course (M.C. answered), don't tell me you didn't know Cam is a basketball player and the captain of the Atlanta team?
- Well... no I didn't (I replied)... But now I know.
- Mr. Flaherty is the one who owns the team so he's my boss and Riggie is my manager.
- It all makes sense now (I said)
-What do you mean? (asked Riggie)
- This morning some girls were teasing Olivia and i because they saw us with Cam when he gave me my phone back (I answered)... I didn't understand anything but now I do... it's because you're a basketball player.
- Oh yes! (Cam replied with pride) It's the result of fame
- Ohh please stop the drama (I said)... you just have to break your foot and we'll see if you're still famous.
- Hey, you can't say that, it's very mean (Missie reprimanded me) and it's bad luck to say that kind of thing
- You're right Missie (I said), I take that back... Cam I'm sorry.
We finished the evening quietly, Riggie and Missie told us how their first date went and it was very funny.
