Chapter 21 - CHAPTER 21

He was moved to the X-ray lab. It was just him and me in the lab so we could talk normally.

-Looks like bad luck is following you today (I said as I helped him into the machine) .... First the dog poop and now this.... Interesting I think.

-I can't believe you're making fun of me (he replied exasperated).... Do you have a cactus for a heart?

- Cam doesn't move.... I don't have a cactus for a heart, I just don't have a heart.

-Let's drop it, this conversation won't get us anywhere anyway.... Tell me about my ankle... Is it bad?

-Cam, I can't tell you.... As far as the laboratory is concerned, I can only take the tests, then I'll send them to the head doctor and he'll tell you if it's serious or not.

-Please, Luciana, I just want to know if my whole career is ruined because of this injury.

- Don't insist, the head doctor will tell you.... At the moment he's on break but he'll be here soon so you won't have to wait too long.

-No one will know that you told me Lucie, I will be as silent as a grave.

-No, I can't, I'm sorry, I don't want to get fired because of you when you can wait a few more minutes.

-If I understand correctly, you refuse to help me because you don't want to get fired from a job you don't even get paid for?

-Not exactly, I refuse to help you because it's against the rules.... Cam you have to learn that the whole world doesn't revolve around your little person... Other people's lives don't depend on yours and other people can't take unnecessary risks just because you want them to.

-It's okay, I understand, you don't have to lecture me (he answered exasperated and then looked at me with a nonce of sadness) .... I thought I meant at least a little to you.... If it had been Riggie, you would have done it for him.

-I don't see what that has to do with it (I replied indifferently and then motioned for the nurses to come and take him back to his room)

-I'm not asking you to talk, just wink at me so I know I'm okay. (He begged me just before the nurse entered the lab)

-Mr. Calloway (I said so he would look at me and then I winked at him)

-Thank you, Dr. Torretto (he answered reassuredly with a slight smile and the nurse took him back to his room.

About ten minutes later, almost everyone was back at the hospital, including Ryan and Daphne. We met in the hallway outside Dr. Phil's office.

-Did we hear that the patient from earlier was Cam? (Asked Ryan)

-Yes it was (I answered), I had to control myself not to kill him because he is so annoying.

-I'm surprised you've even been able to stand it this long (Daphne added), it's usually impossible for you not to yell at each other all day long.

-Yes, I admit it's a first. (I said)

Didn't he ask you what the x-rays said (asked Ryan)? Because knowing him, he must have nagged you to tell him.

-Yeah, you said that (I said, not letting my discomfort show), he really insisted but I stuck to my guns.... I gave him a categorical refusal.

-You did the right thing (Daphne replied with a smile)

Dr. Phil came out of his office and walked over to us and pulled me aside to talk to me. He asked me if I was the one who took care of Cam, I told him I was and he asked me to accompany him to Cam's room. So I followed him to the room where Cam had been placed.

-So Mr. Calloway, how are you feeling? (Dr. Phil asked Cam)

-Pretty bad but I've been through worse so I'm not worried (Cam replied)

-That's good, because worrying increases stress and therefore slows down recovery, Mr. Calloway (I added)

-Exactly, Dr. Torretto (Dr. Phil answered me and then turned to

Cam) .... Mr. Calloway I have reviewed your x-ray and you have acute swelling in your ankle. We're going to have to get you to ....

-Wait a minute, Dr., are you saying I have acute swelling? (Cam cut him off in surprise and then turned to me angrily) .... Why did you tell me my injury wasn't serious?.... How can you be so sadistic? What the hell is your problem Torretto?

-Please calm down Mr. Calloway (says Dr. Phil to calm Cam), it's true that Dr. Torretto was not qualified to tell you that but she's right, it's nothing too serious... In fact, what I was about to tell you before you cut me off is that we're going to immobilize your ankle for two weeks and you're going to have to use crutches to get around without any trouble.

-But you said I have acute swelling (says Cam)

-That's the equivalent of a normal sprain, Mr. Calloway (I replied to Cam with a disingenuous smile, trying to hide my anger) ....

-You will be released from the hospital today, (Dr. Phil added) once the nurse has completed your care and you will return every 2 days so we can monitor the healing process of your ankle.

Cam could see the rage in my eyes as Dr. Phil and I left his room. Dr. Phil asked me to follow him to the front of his office where Ryan and Daphne were. He reprimanded me for not following the rules and explained that even though I was one of the best interns in the hospital, he would have to fire me so that I wouldn't set a bad example for the other interns. So he told me to put my things away and leave.
