By late afternoon, there was a lot less pressure at the hospital. Daphne, Ryan and I were about to go get coffees and lunch when one of the nurses at the front desk of the hospital, Allison Pierce, came running up to us.
-Luciana, Ryan and Daphne... Thank God you're still here. (She called out to us out of breath)
-Actually, we were just about to go on break since we haven't been able to get one all day. (Daphne answered her nicely)
-What's going on, Allison? (Asked Ryan) Why are you all out of breath?
-We have an ambulance on the way and there are no doctors on duty in the hospital to deal with it. (Answered Allison).... We need you.
-Is there really no one else? (I asked).... Because we are literally starving.
-I've been around the hospital, Luciana (Allison replied).... That's why I'm out of breath.... I couldn't find anyone.... Everyone's on break.
-Okay, I'll stay here (I said to Allison and then turned to Ryan and Daphne).... You two go ahead. I'll take care of this.
-Thanks for sacrificing for us, sweetie (Ryan said and then gave me a hug) .... I'll bring you a coffee and a sandwich so you don't go hungry on your shift tonight (then he walked out)
-Sweetheart? (Said a surprised Daphne).... That's new.... And it comes with a hug.... How many episodes have I missed?
-It's just a simple word and a hug.
(I say)
-Yeah right, we'll talk about it later. (Says Daphne as she heads for the door).... See you later. (She went to join Ryan)
Allison and I were left in the office; I barely had time to put on my gown before the ambulance arrived. We made our way to the emergency room as quickly as possible.
-Good evening, I'm Dr. Torretto (I said to the paramedics as I took the report), so what do we have?
-A young sportsman, about 23 years old, he feels a violent pain in his leg and can't stand up (explained one of the paramedics)
-Okay (I said, flipping through the report), and what did you give him?
-I gave him a shot of morphine for the pain (said another paramedic)
-You did very well (I replied, then turned to Allison), what emergency room was he transferred to?
-He is in room number 2 (she answered)
-Okay, I'll go (I said)
I headed to the room while Allison returned to the front desk. A nurse was in the room with the patient.
-So how does it look? (I said as I entered)
-The patient's vitals are fine, Dr., but the pain in his ankle is getting worse. (The nurse replied)
-Inject him with another dose of morphine, that should decrease the pain and elevate his leg so I can see exactly what is wrong with his ankle (I said, then noticed that his face was completely covered with a towel) .... Why is his face covered?
-He said the light in the room was bothering him so I offered to cover his face so he could rest. (She explained to me as she did what I asked).
-Her it's not a problem, just dim the room because I need to talk to the patient so he can tell me what happened. (I say as I put on my gangs)
-Okay, Dr. (she said as she went to dim the lights)
Once the nurse dimmed the lights, I removed the towel from the patient's face. I was surprised to see that Cam was the patient. Suddenly, I felt worried. He had fallen asleep because of the painkillers the nurse had given him. I moistened a towel and patted him lightly on the face to wake him up.
-How are you feeling? (I said to Cam as he woke up)
-(He answered me by opening his eyes slightly, he was still stunned by the calming so he didn't realize it was me yet)
-It's normal, we injected you with morphine. (I answered and took the report) .... What is your name and how did you get hurt?
-My name is Cameron.... Cameron Calloway.... It happened during my basketball practice, I made a bad move and the next second I couldn't stand up (he answered me before giving me a surprised look because he just realized that I was the doctor)
-Listen Mr. Calloway, I'm going to have to examine your ankle so you might feel a little tingling.
-Mr? (He answered surprised) .... Are you sure you're okay?
-Can you get me some alcohol? I need it to sterilize my gangs. (I asked the nurse and as soon as she left the room I turned to Cam)....
-Listen to me Cam, this is my workplace and no one can know that we know each other you idiot.
-It's absurd... But it's up to you, viper (he answered).... I see that even here you can't stop spitting your venom....
-Great. (I answered him ignoring his remark)
The nurse came in so we stopped talking. Feeling her ankle I noticed that it was much too swollen so I suggested an x-ray.
Mr. Calloway (said the nurse to Cam), we're going to transfer you to the lab to get your x-ray.
-Okay (he replied), how long do I have to stay there?
-A few minutes (I replied) .... If you don't move of course.... Let's go.
-Wait (he said), how do I know I'm not going to get germs in this machine?
-Mr. Calloway (I replied), several people use this machine during the day and it is thoroughly cleaned after each pass.... Can we go now?
-Yes, we can (Cam replied)
