Chapter 2 - Why’d this happen to me

"I don't understand, what are you saying?" Said Mackenzie Rosetti with a voice of deep concern, Geneva's mother, who took care of her and her siblings.

"I'm sorry mrs. Rosetti, we thought your daughter was deaf, but something strange has been found about her condition. She says she still can hear a whistle and sounds but she is just unable to hear human speaking. This rarely ever happens but this is the case with your daughter." Said the head doctor on her case.

"How can this be? How rare is it? How do we fix it?" Geneva's mother asked and rapidly fired questions at the doctor.

"Hmm, it's true that we've seen patients with similar circumstances but we have not seen it to this level. In many cases, our patients have described to us that they can hear faint sound, that is if the sound is alarmingly loud. But your daughter can hear a small noises, such as a footstep or creaks. She can hear noises from far away like cars or any basic sound but she is only unable to hear human voices entirely." The doctor informed Ms Rosetti with calmness in his voice.

Mrs. rosetti continues to cry but calmness in the doctor's voice and demeanor helps calm her down, puts the thought that maybe her condition isn't so bad."

"However, it's not behind me to believe that there is a cause to this. Maybe a trigger of some sort that may have prevented her ability to pick up on sound emissions produced from the vocals. We will do a lot more research and run studies and do all we can to help your daughter. We will recommend you some programs or alternatives for the time being." The doctor continued to inform her.

"Thank you doctor." Mrs rosetti said in a heartbroken tone of voice as she got up and left the doctor's office.

On her way home Mrs. Rosetti received a call from Geneva who was last at home and still resting.

"Geneva, honey, why did you call me? Is everything fine?" Ms.rosetti asked but received no reply which started to worry her. "Geneva... Geneva" No reply after calling her name Over and over started to worry her even further.

On the other end of the phone, Geneva is in shock at the various whispers she is hearing. They're not any voices she knows and they're not coming from the phone, So, why or how is she hearing these voices? She hasn't hit her head, she hasn't even been hurt, not to mention she's completely alone, What could cause these whispers?

"Geneva, who are speaking to? Geneva, I'm on my way home now, just wait!" Ms. Rosetti told her daughter as she heard her daughter mumbling.

Ms. Rosetti returns home and quickly rushed into Geneva's room, expecting to find something not right, but everything seemed just fine.

"Geneva, read my lips, what is wrong? We'll type it into the phone, sounds like a better idea." Said Geneva's mother as her worry, though everything seemed fine, still had a presence.

"Mom, I have something I need to do." Geneva's mother read on her phone.

"What is it?" Geneva's mother replied, though the text didn't quite capture her worry, Geneva knew how she'd ask, if she could hear her voice.

"I have to find a specific person, I just don't know who I am looking for or sort of where, I'd find them." Geneva replied through another text message.

"No! No way! As mother I can't let you, it's way too dangerous." Geneva's mother replied back, though, you could feel emotion got thicker.

"Mom, It's very important to me, it's the only thing I can think of and it can help me, I just know it!" Geneva replied through a clearer text.

Ms. Rosetti began to cry, her age really mellowed her since her young days.

"You came back home and now you're telling me you're leaving again. Do you need me to go with you? I'll go with you, I can help. I know you're 23 and not a kid but you'll always have me and your siblings, I'll give Jacob a call if you don't want me to help out." Geneva's mother told her through a more heartfelt text.

"Mom I got it, Jacob's a scumbag and I can figure this out and fix it myself, I don't understand it now but when I fix the problem and get the answers I'm looking for, I'll tell you everything." Geneva says.

"Ok, but who were you talking to on the phone, I heard muttering or something which made me rush back here." Geneva's mother told her.

Geneva sighed, hesitating to answer, "Don't freak out but I don't hear voices when I'm speaking to someone but I do hear these voices when no one's around." Geneva answered, though very hesitantly.

"What do you mean when no one's around?" Geneva's mother questioned her, but she didn't really want an answer.

"I don't know what I mean by they are just not here but they're not here, I can't answer it myself." Geneva answered.

I haven't told anyone this but ever since the day that man in the carriage approached me, this has happened and I haven't shaken the feeling that someone is constantly watching me.

"I don't want to see you go, but I know that I can't stop you either. Can you at least promise me you will not travel by yourself or take one of your brothers or sisters along, doesn't have to be Jacob, I'm sorry for even considering him." Geneva's mother asked knowing she'd say yes.

After thinking on it for a bit Geneva considered that it wasn't the best idea to be out and about traveling alone.

"Hmm, ok I promise I will take someone along with me, and I will contact you regularly so you don't have a heart attack worrying about me."

"You've always been smart about things, be safe."

"I will mom."
