Chapter 11 - The Book

Adrian finally awakened and noticed that he was in the room given to him. He looked around and noticed that his room is bland. He needed to decorate it, but he must tell them what he learned about the evil spirit. He also noticed that the ring on his finger started to turn to dust.

"I guess the evil spirit finally broke seeing as its cursed item turned to ash. I am surprised it managed to last that long." Adrian thought and looked at the sweaty clothes he is in.

"I should also get some new clothes after this. Might as well get my signing bonus." Adrian told himself as he went out of his room to find Joe.

Adrian stood by his door and it automatically opened. He found Sofia and Joe waiting in the lounge for him to awaken. They were surprised that he woke early but they had more pressing concerns.

"I am glad that you are awake." Sofia stated.

"Thanks. How long was I out?" Adrian asked as he had no way to tell the time.

"About ten minutes but did you managed to find out anything?" Joe asked as he wanted an answer to what is happening to the Deviants.

"Before I give an answer, let us talk about my employee benefits, shall we? I am not doing this for free." Adrian stated with a beaming smile.

Joe let out a sigh and said, "Follow me to my office then." Joe stated as he led Adrian to his office. Sofia followed them as she wanted to know what Adrian will tell them.

Sofia noticed Adrian looked quite serious behind the smile, so she did not comment on the latter's behavior. Adrian arrived at the office and sat down without ceremony. Sofia closed the door as she was the last to enter.

Adrian looked around the office and it was decently big but has no decorations. In other words, Adrian thought that the room is quite bland but that is what he expects from an angel.

"So, what kind of compensation do you want?" Joe asked as he knew that Adrian is really serious about the salary.

"Just give me what they get. I bet they get great money seeing that you are working them to the bone." Adrian stated as he switched to a more relaxed sitting position.

Joe did not reply instead took out something from the cupboards on his desk. He then handed Adrian a black shiny card.

"I believe you will use it wisely for you benefit. Only buy things that you really need or are essential. The card has no limit but avoid spending too much in one area or in a short amount of time. Other than those reasons, feel free to use it." Joe stated.

"Don't mind if I do." Adrian stated as he verified and admired the card.

"Well, care to tell us about the information that you obtained?" Sofia asked after a few minutes of silence.

"I almost forgot about that." Adrian replied but that only made the two it him in the head.

"The ring disintegrated when the evil spirit met unfortunate circumstances. I did manage to peer unto its memories when it tried to possess me. The one who released it carried a book but the person responsible managed to erase his face from the evil spirit's memories." Adrian stated.

"That basically means that you learned nothing." Sofia rebuked as she really looked forward to the potential information.

"That is the thing though. The person who released the evil spirit did not have any special powers according to what the evil spirit felt. It was the book that help release that five-hundred-year-old evil spirit.

After the evil spirit was released, it commanded the evil spirit to possess superpowered individuals. The commands were basically possessing the Deviants and rampage. I think whoever is raising the dead or releasing evil spirits is practicing and has a grudge against Deviants." Adrian stated as he tried the twirling function of his chair.

"No face means no use. Did you even have a good look at the book?" Joe asked.

"Unfortunately, the evil spirit was not too keen on examining every detail when it got released. But if my hunch is correct then that book should be one of the Book of Dead. We just do not know which one but seeing it could raise the dead without the caster having any powers then it should be one of the powerful ones." Adrian stated which made Joe wrinkle his forehead.

"Can you elaborate? I thought these Book of the Dead or whatever are just stories of dread to warn people not to mess with forces they cannot understand. Even me who lived two centuries has only heard of stories about the Book of the Dead." Sofia stated as she did not believe what Adrian is saying.

Sofia looked at Joe to back her up, but the latter looked perplexed. Joe is seriously considering what Adrian said and Sofia also started to believe. How could she not believe when Joe is much older than she is.

"Let us go to the archives. Call the others as well. I will brief them when they are in the Archive Room. Adrian, follow me." Joe stated as he ordered Sofia to call everyone. Sofia is the first to leave as she needed to gather everyone.

"Are you sure it is the one of the Book of the Dead? I know that you know if it is one of those books then it could bring a large number of deaths." Joe stated as he and Adrian are walking in the hallway.

"The problem that I am seeing is that the induvial who has it managed to raise the dead without even a shred of magical energy. The caster might not even know that he is expending his life or the life of those around him by raising the dead." Adrian stated in a serious tone which he did not show towards Sofia.

"If even you are saying that the book is dangerous then we must retrieve it urgently." Joe stated in a serious tone.

"Fortunately, the one who has the book has yet to master the forbidden spells in that book. Let us just hope for the best." Adrian stated.

"You, hoping for the best, scares me more." Joe commented.
