Chapter 39 - Familiar Face

Just as he got out of the building and was standing within the entrance of the building where a few officers blocked the passage of civilians and the press. Thomas received a call from Katherine through the adepts restrict frequency. But seeing he was on the street, he headed somewhere safer before accepting the call.

[How is it over there? I heard you went to investigate a crime near your house.]

"Things looked pretty bad. Twelve bodies violently murdered, the police thinks it may be more than one of them. The traces of energy I detected on their bodies was similar to Anima Energy and didn't seem to originate for any sort of energy guns. I suspect there is an Adept behind the crime and a fairly powerful. The problem is that an Adept at this level could easily burn the bodies destroy any traces that could be left behind."

[I see... I will warn the others about it and ask the city government for the CCTV footage in the area, maybe it will let us find something. Right now you must keep working with the police to solve this case. You can call me later if my assistance is required. Shade out.]

Leaving the quiet corner behind the building, Thomas heard a familiar voice coming the building's front gate.

"Uncle? When did return from that business trip? Mom couldn't stop worrying when you went to London last week."

A few steps later, Thomas gaze searched for the source of the voice and could see a bright young girl about his age and the long golden hair falling to her shoulders. Talking to her was the middle aged police officer Thomas just met, Lieutenant Scott.

Lieutenant Scott scratched his head in embarrassment. "Oh... Right, I forgot. My flight just landed past midnight and the boss sent me to investigate this crime. Hey, what are you doing down here, didn't you mom tell you this area was too dangerous for you? I don't want your mother to worry especially when your brother is an wanted criminal..."

Not bothering to hear his words, the girl poked with her head forward in a attempt to caught a glimpse of the building. "Is there when the crime happened? It looks pretty damn bad. When are you coming visit mom and I?"

"Later. I must visit the victims' relatives. Are you done with you work? Its too late for you to be walking in the streets by yourself. Wait a minute, I will have an officer take you back home."

As the uncle and nephew talked, a third voice rose from within the circle of policemen. "Clarisse?"

"Thomas?!" Clarisse immediately recognized the young in a casual attire despite it being strange seeing him with the police officers inside the crime scene.

Since they met each other in the cake shop all those weeks ago, Thomas and Clarisse have been exchanging text quite often, yet this is the first time he had seen her since he walked her home that night.

Thomas walked towards them. The Lieutenant stare moved between the two of them. "Do you two know each other?"

"Yeah, we used to be classmates back then. His mom and mine are friend as well, you know her uncle. The officer Jade Ries from the northern precinct." Clarisse nodded slightly. "Thomas, this man is my mom's older brother, Alex Scott."

For a moment, there was a light in her eyes when she instantly grabbed the quiet Thomas by the arm with a chuckle. "There is no need to send me back home on a police car. Thomas, can you walk me home?"

"Er?" Thomas froze. Immediately he went to keep his emotions in check so he won't let any anima energy escape or reveal the secret of his unique attribute. "Ah... Right. I should be returning so there is no problem if I walk a little bit more."

Scott observed the two for a moment before giving his agreement. Either way, Thomas was an adept registered in the association. It was safer for her to stay close to Thomas than a hundred police officers.

The way to Clarisse's house was very close to his and even closer to the crime scene than Thomas' place.

Walking by Clarisse's side, Thomas kept quiet. Even after all power he obtained, Thomas still found hard to talk with others since he became used to the solitude of being the trash of the class.

The walk went by swiftly, and Thomas as stuck in his thoughts when he felt a hand pulling him by the sleeve.

"Thomas, Thomas..." Clarisse repeatedly called out to him while pulling his arm and Thomas turned around just to see a pair of clear, round pupils staring at him.

"Er... Sorry I wasn't keeping attention." Thomas lowered his flushed face. In that instant Thomas got to see her eyes staring into his. For some reason it made the demonic energy in his body boil in a reaction he had never felt before.

To his surprise, Clarisse seemed to find his reactions funny and grinned. "It's fine. I made you go all the way to send me home without asking first. It must be pretty intense to work as an Adept?"

"Intense is an understatement. I faced eight 1-star adepts, Lycanthropes, demonic beasts and all that just in the first week."

"Right, I saw it in the news. Back when you were hospitalized, the hospital didn't accept visits outside of relatives. Even my coworkers kept talking about you since you were the one who saved then from the demons last time."

It was at this moment they had arrived at Clarrise's home. Thomas could even faintly hear her mother's voice talking on the phone with somebody coming from the building's second floor.

Seeing she was back home, Thomas prepared to left yet turned around after a moment of pondering. "Clarisse, I shouldn't be saying this to any civilians but there has been an abnormal increase of rift occurrences. I suggest for you to keep away from the outer regions of the city maybe even leave on a vacation by the end of the year."

Without waiting for her answer, Thomas swiftly left like a lightning bolt crossing straight towards his home.

Clarisse on other side kept standing by the apartment's door, gazing at the place where Thomas was standing just moments ago.

Her expression seemed a lot darker and even a little melancholic as she turned around and walk through the door.
