Chapter 10 - Laundry

With today's events, I only had enough time to get the laundry done. That just means more chores tomorrow. I went outside again after the conversation with Aunt Mabel and started folding the now dry clothes, placing them into the basket. Aunt Mabel had excused herself to return home to her own husband, and she waved at me as she passed. Finishing the folding, I took the basket into the house and as soon as I walked through the door I found Josiah sitting in the living room with my parents. 'Why is he here?' I thought to myself.

"Hello, Soline," he greeted me, standing.

"Hello, Josiah. What brings you here?" I said, confused.

"Go and put the laundry away, Soline," Father said, "Josiah and I are having a conversation."

"Yes, Father," I said. What could Josiah and Father be talking about? More importantly, why wasn't I allowed in the room? I turned and grabbed the clothes belonging to my parents and dropped them off in their room, and I grabbed my own clothes and put them in their respective place in mine. When I was finished, I returned downstairs to Mother setting the table for dinner. I helped her with setting the places, and we sat down to eat.

"Why was Josiah here today?" I asked as soon as Father took his first bite. He chewed and swallowed before answering.

"He has come to ask permission to court you. I would like to know your opinion on it before responding. I told him I would need more time to think about it before giving him an answer." He explained.

Josiah wants to court me? He's the most handsome person in my age group. Why wouldn't he go after someone like Antoinette? Someone bubbly and cheerful, two things of which I am not. Father was looking at me as I was mulling it over.

"It would be a good decision to say yes, I suppose. I'm not sure if he will like me once he really gets to know me, it has been so long since we were true friends." I said.

"All right," Father said, "I will give him my permission tomorrow." And that was the end of the conversation. We continued to eat in silence, and I helped Mother clear the table afterwards. I could feel her worry, so I tried to console her.

"I'm sure everything will be fine. We will figure out what the right path is." I told her.

"Right now, with the path your Aunt Mabel wants to take, I am not sure even God can help us."
