Chapter 2 - Part 2: Journals of the Militia

James Neill

Scientist/Medical Officer

I've never put much stock into miracles. But after the last two days, I think I've become a believer. The day itself had started off badly. With the recurring nightmare. Of her. Every time she was doomed. Every time I failed to save her from her fate. I woke up in a sweat and immediately showered and put on my lab clothes. As usual, I grabbed my coffee walked by Westley and Penelope and after saying a few words with them, I headed into my lab. I took a long swig of my coffee before heading to my computers. As I walked by the middle of my experimental potions I noticed something amiss and realized someone had dismantled the wall that held my experimental torpedoes, I walked towards them, and felt a sudden change in the air. I moved slightly and narrowly missed the shuriken that flew way too close to my ear. I watched it vibrate in the wall it was now embedded in before I ducked and rolled under the table and came up the other side a bo staff held in each hand, I blocked another shuriken and suddenly I was locked in combat with a masked figure. I blocked each attack trying to move to the silent alarm. But whoever this fighter was, they were good. I made a turn suddenly throwing my leg out as I did, the move did make them stumble slightly. Giving me time to shove them away from me so I could throw myself back to press the silent alarm. When I looked back I realized that the person who I had been fighting was in fact a girl with brunette curls, she pushed back her curls straightening as she did so. And I realized that the girl with the agility of a Japanese samurai was in fact the girl of my dreams.

"Lena?" I said my eyes wide. Lena raised her hands as a horde of militia ran inside shoving her to her knees and pointing guns at the girl that was once my girlfriend. She smirked, as Westley pushed his way through the crowd, the slightly dropped his gun when he recognized her.

"Selene?"

Westley

This day was supposed to be an easy day of work. I wasn't even on shift today. I could've been home watching TV and napping. Possibly both at the same time. Not in an interrogation room that has rarely been used because of the fact we worked at a military lab!!! I couldn't exactly believe who I was seeing. Selene was supposed to be dead. She had been shot. I'd assumed like everyone else that she was dead. Apparently not. Like everyone else I'd assumed that they had dumped her body somewhere above the remains of the University. Now she's sitting in front of me with a superior look on her face not telling me anything.

"Selene. You are supposed to be dead. Can you explain to me, how you are sitting here in front of me even if you don't want to tell me how you suddenly appear to have the reflexes of a Japanese Samurai according to James, and seems to be after his experimental torpedoes?" Selene blinked at me, looking up at where I stood above her. "Maybe James just sucks at hand-to-hand combat," Selene said. "And maybe when you saw him it made you pause. Just a bit." I said.

"Like you did?" Selene asked looking at me darkly as she did. I flinched at her words. I'd been a soldier for over ten years but seeing my friend who I had thought I would never again see, did in fact make me pause. I wasn't used to showing weakness and I especially didn't like being called out on being weak. "Selene, I don't think you realize the precarious situation you find yourself in," I said rolling up my sleeves. "And I don't think you realize that the Crimson Faction always has a backup plan," Selene said her eyes narrowing at me. I felt a sudden tremor at her words and I glanced up and watched warily as the ceiling lamp shook, and the walls started to crack over some unseen force. I looked back at Selene who smiled at me raising her tied hands in the air and snapping her cuffs in half, freeing herself. She jumped out of her chair and kicked out at me surprising me both with her speed and strength. I fell forwards receiving an elbow in the chest as I fell on my back. Selene leaped down grabbing my other cuffs and cuffing me to the bottom leg of the chair.

"Goddammit, Lena!" I said as she jumped up waving the keys at me, before unloading all the bullets from my gun except for the last three with a smirk. "I got things to do." She said blowing a kiss my way as she ran out. I scowled hitting the comms button on my jacket. "Someone tell me what the hell just happened!"

I jolted out of my seat as I heard and felt the tremor of the bomb. "You've got to be kidding me," I said. I moved away from my table and immediately fell to the floor as a second wave larger than the first hit. I covered my ears as the world around me spun. Most likely the second wave had been a magnetic wave disruptor. The world spun and I could barely hear what was going on around me. I blinked rapidly and as soon as I was able to focus on something I realized that there were people in my lab. One of them a man, pulled off his mask. "You look familiar." He said frowning. I looked up at him and realized with horrible clarity that he was the face that haunted my dreams every night. The one that had taken Lena away from me. "We got the device. Let's go." One of the other masked figures said.

"Well there's no need for you, now is there?" the man said with a smirk pointing a gun at me. I looked down the barrel of the gun and wondered if it was the same Glock that had taken Lena away from me.

"Elliot no!" Lena said. I turned slightly surprised to see her appear in the doorway. My heart still stuttering in my chest as I looked at the girl I still loved. "Go to the plane, I'll be there in a second. There's one more thing we need from this scientist before we go." She said. Elliot scowled but he and the others exited the lab. I watched as Lena turned to my lab opening drawers. "You brought this upon yourself you know." She said calmly, as she pulled out a syringe.

I flinched. "If I had known torpedoes was all it took to flush out the resistance I would've made them sooner." I spat out. Lena looked at me darkly. Before she kicked me in the side, taking a knee beside me and pressing down on my chest as she did. "The torpedoes have nothing to do with the resistance." She said anger lacing her tone. She stabbed me in the neck with the syringe and she wasn't gentle about it. Then she pulled my hand and put it through a square-like machine the size of a hand.

"You should've made this easier." She said before she punched me across the face and the world turned black.

Director Richard Kane

It was days like this I hated working both sides. The experiments were supposed to follow orders their assignments given to them based on the needs of the resistance. In this case, they had gone rogue or at the very least this had come personally from the Scientist. That fool would ruin all my carefully laid-out plans. He would need to be dealt with. As would his experiments. All of them. And thankfully, due to some genius involvement, I had a way to destroy them from the inside. But I would have to be careful.

After the base had been attacked, a bloody hole in my prized state-of-the-art lab and the halls in the wreckage, General Tanaka and I surveyed the tapes. Ren Tanaka had always been one of my calmer generals. I had been completely unprepared for her fury. Apparently she a score to settle with the former headmaster's daughter Selene. Something to do with Selene murdering her brother ruthlessly in an alleyway. Apparently, Selene had done so much damage to the body that there hadn't been a lot left to cremate.

Selene Drake had been one of the first experiments. And I had known for an extremely long time that she would have to die. She was too headstrong and far too charismatic to be allowed to live. General Tanaka might just yet get her vengeance against her brother. Although she wasn't the only one affected by her sudden reappearance. If I could've saved James from the heartache of being reunited with this Selene with all her anger and murderous rage I would have. The poor boy had been through enough the first time he lost her. I don't know how he would survive a second time.

I had always had science to back me when I felt lost. But now I feel torn. Between Science with all its wonder and life but also its rebirth. What do I do now with the knowledge that everything I had ever thought was a lie? Lena had never died. We had stopped looking for her because we assumed she would never have survived a gunshot. How could we be so stupid? "You need to forget that it is Lena that has stolen the torpedoes so that you remember that she is now our enemy," Wesley said darkly. I scowled. I understood his reasoning of course. Lena was now the enemy. She had broken into our base and left it in shambles. Stolen classified weapons. She would have to be stopped. But before all of that, I needed to see her again. Talk to her. There had to be some reason for all of this. If we could just speak…

Director Kane

Preparations were being made. They had brought in a specialist from the FBI who was looking to capture Lena. Surprisingly Detective Drake had actually been able to locate where the Resistance had their home base. Not surprising was the sudden helpfulness of James O'Neill. He clearly wanted to see Lena again. I allowed it. The sooner we got rid of the Doctor the better it would be before he is able to figure out things he should leave the hell alone.

Selene

I clenched my hands in my sheets as I woke up to the sound of blaring alarms. We were under attack once again. I sat up slightly and realized immediately that I wasn't alone. I leaned back against my pillow and grabbed a silver blade no bigger than a pen and let it fly. The dagger vibrated as it sunk deep into the wood inches away from the intruder's head. My eyes widened as I saw James. Once again. "You have something that belongs to me." He said while pointing a crossbow at my head. "Don't make me shoot you," James said. I narrowed my eyes at him. "Do you really think you can just barge into my domain without consequences?" I asked darkly. "You mean as you did?" James asked raising an eyebrow. I scowled. "Good point," I said standing up on top of my mattress. I watched as James flushed at my half-nakedness, and internally rolled my eyes. Boys. I stepped off the bed and slid on my long overcoat with the fur collar.

"What are you going to do now?" I said looking at James glancing around and walking over to my knee-high boots. I slid into them pulling the laces tight. I put my hand in my pocket pulling out my silver Glock. "It's only fair," I said raising a single eyebrow. James rolled his eyes. But he did put the crossbow back in the holder in his back. "Lena if you wanted me to be dead you'd have let your murderer shoot me a week ago." He said. I flinched. "You recognized him," I asked quietly.

"Of course I did. His face has haunted me for years." He said.

"How sweet." A new voice said. I twitched taking a shot at the new intruder. It hit Director Kane in the arm barely making him flinch. He smirked, looking at me cruelly. "I'm going to enjoy this." He said shooting something at me. I pulled out the needle falling to my knees at the unpleasant sensation.

I grabbed my chest as Kane smiled. "Now become the monster, you were meant to be." He said.

"Lena!" James said looking alarmed. He turned furiously to Director Kane. "You're with them. That's the only way you could've had one of those serums." James said. "Too bad. Now, you're going to have to die too." Director Kane said pulling out a Glock of his own. Before he could do anything however he was knocked on the head with the butt of a rifle. "Thought I heard a noise," Wesley said frowning when he realized who he had knocked out. "Kane shot her with something," James said. Approaching me, "I need to help her."

"No!" I said. I could feel something spreading through my veins like fire. I got up shakily and pushed my hands out, a gust of force pushed the boys out of my room. "GET OUT," I said screaming, putting my hands on my head as I fell to the floor in excruciating pain. My nails dug into the seams of the wood that was underneath me, splintering it. I lifted my head and screamed. And then there was blackness.

August 5, 2052

Emily

I covered my ears as I heard Selene's tortured scream. "Aimee!" I screamed as the screams dissipated. I opened my eyes to see Aimee's pale face. "I heard it too. We have to find her." She said. Around us, our home was falling apart, as militia and resistance fighters converged and fought. Aimee and I ran through the carnage only fighting when we needed to make a path. As we turned the corner we crashed into two militia officers fleeing. "You!" Aimee exclaimed as she looked at one of the guys. I frowned realizing who I was looking at. "You're the Scientist."

"The one you stole from, you mean." The other officer said darkly. "That doesn't matter, my name is James. And Selene is in danger." The Scientist, James said. "Selene was injected with something. You have to go help her." James said passionately.

"Where is she?" Aimee said. Both boys pointed behind them and we turned the corner, to Selene's bedroom. I glanced inside and saw General Kane in a crumple on the floor. "What is Kane doing here?" Aimee asked. "He's the one who injected her," James said from behind us.

"What?!" I said with my eyes wide. "But General Kane is with the Resistance!" I said.

"Excuse me? He's the Director of our operations. What do you mean he's in the resistance?" the other man said. Aimee stared at the soldier with dark eyes before she grabbed Kane by his collar and lifted him up and shoved him roughly against the wall making him wake up with a start. "What the hell did you do, Kane?" Aimee asked her voice dark. I watched as Kane's eyes darkened his eyes glancing once to me, and then to the boys that stood silently watching. And then he started laughing. Aimee tightened her grip on the so-called Director, her voice changing. "I compel you to answer me! What did you do?" Aimee said her words precise and deadly. I knew if I had been looking into her eyes the way Kane was they would be swirls of silver surrounding the pupil demanding Kane to listen and to speak my truth. "I did what I had to do. The time of the experiments of the Scientist is over. Did you really think you would all be safe forever? All of you, everything you've ever done has planted the seeds of your own destruction. All of you have been so loyal to a man who claimed to have created you but the serum he used was never his." Kane spat and then immediately paled as he realized that he let spill.

"What do you mean?" I asked. "If the serum didn't belong to the Scientist, where did it come from?" James asked from behind me. "I will never tell you that. You will have to kill me. There is absolutely no way I will tell you." Kane said continuing a diatribe all our experiments had heard before. I turned to look for Lena's arrows. I pulled her silver arrow with the truth serum tip and stabbed Kane in the neck, startling Aimee enough that she dropped him and he fell on the floor gasping and clutching at his neck. "Now are you ready to speak?" I asked, Aimee stood beside me and James stood on my right. The other soldier stood with his arms crossed staring down at Kane on Aimee's other side. "You, experiments are all abominations." Kane spat out. "The serum was never a serum. You've all allowed yourselves to be tainted with the blood of other creatures." Kane said. "What other creatures?" James asked.

"Creatures of another planet. We've been under invasion for an extremely long time."

"Wait. I'm coming with you." I turned surprised to see one of the soldiers running towards me. "Why?" I thought you'd be more concerned with capturing the Scientist." I said narrowing my eyes at him. "My only concern is with Lena. She's the only reason I came on this mission. I'm a Scientist that created torpedoes. Or more importantly, the serum that can apparently counteract the serum that has apparently been alien blood this whole time." I said my eyes widening. Because in all actuality that is what had actually happened. James' eyebrows raised up. "I guess that is what happened." He hedged.

"My name's Emily by the way," I said taking a turn into another hallway. There was carnage everywhere. I was unsure whether the carnage had been caused by people fighting or purely by Lena's blood rampage. "Lena's been like this before," I said putting my palm to the hand scanner that led to our lab. "Like what? She's been stuck with a needle before?" James asked.

"No…" I hesitated realizing that she had been stuck with needles before. We all had. "Yes, she's been stuck with a needle before but that's not what I meant," I said taking a breath as I pulled open a drawer looking for a small rectangular machine. "She's been consumed by rage before. It's a side effect of the serum." I said.

"How can you be sure?" James asked. "The first time it happened to Lena it was the night we met," I said, typing on the computer and pulling out the camera system. "When Lena saved me from a rapist," I said glancing at James. "He'd already attacked me when she got there, and I think seeing me, seeing the blood and what the man had been doing to me had filled her with so much rage, that the alien blood must've taken over," I said crossing my arms.

James frowned. "There's so much we could learn from actually having an alien to study from. But we don't even know where they are." James said. "Or even if they are still alive. Lena was the first test subject. And I've noticed the gifts vary from person to person." I said as I looked through the drawers as I tried to locate the gadget I knew could help us locate Lena. I made a small noise of triumph as I found the instrument. I pressed a button and smiled when a tiny compartment burst forth. I opened the needle and put a drop of the substance inside of it.

"What are you doing?" James asked frowning. "I thought we were looking for Lena?" he asked. "We are. Every serum ever created has a homing signal. So all I have to do is take the remaining drops off this syringe and we'll be able to locate where she is in the building." I said as I slid the syringe into the square machine and slid it into the main computer. A few more clicks and the blueprint of the building lit up in neon green. A purple blinking dot was pulsing in the middle of the screen. "Is that her?" James asked. "Yeah, it is," I said my eyes narrowing. "So where is that?" James asked. "Exactly where I hoped she wouldn't be," I said with a sigh. "And where is that?" James asked. I moved to grab a bo staff off the cabinet. "The Main foyer where most of the fighting is taking place."

August 5, 2052

Aimee

I hated this. For all intents and purposes, this place had been my home. A safe haven. And now it was being destroyed. "What is all of this?" Westley the soldier who had followed me asked. "Emily set this up. I am taking any information about the experience and the serum." I said. "We have a transport. Once Emily and James find Lena we can get out of here." Westley said. "Kane is still your director."

"I've always disliked him. I know someone who will help us. He'll know what to do." Westley said. "Out of curiosity is this person more likely to try and kill the experiments like Kane apparently was trying to?" I asked looking at Westley carefully. He frowned then shrugged. "Unclear. Guess we'll find out together." Westley said grabbing the USB and walking out of the computer room. "The Helicopter is this way." He said. I narrowed my eyes. Ever since I'd been kidnapped and changed to suit the needs of the resistance I had been told the Military was the enemy. And now I was putting my life in the hands of that very enemy? Apparently, I was, I thought with a sigh, as I followed Westley. "Where did you park the Helicopter? The roof?" I asked as I caught up to him. "That's too obvious. Plus, we were worried about roof snipers." Westley said. I stifled a smile and followed him around the corner into chaos. The main foyer was full of both military and resistance fighters all fighting each other.

"Not everyone in the Resistance is like the Scientist. Some are like me. They were taken from their homes and forced into a war they were never a part of." I said. Westley nodded. "I'm going to make sure that the resistance fighters are taken to custody not killed. See if you can't find Emily, James, and Lena. Meet me out in the front lawn." Westley said before he disappeared into the raging sea of fighters. I wondered if I could trust him. Kane had been on our side but apparently on his as well. I'd put my trust in the people who had stolen me from my home, my family because I had no other choice. Who would I choose to trust now?

I took a deep breath and threw myself into the fight, I grabbed a long crossbow off of one of the resistance fighters and shot a bunch in succession throwing my hand up I closed my eyes and used my powers to make the arrows put their targets to sleep. I turned to the resistance fighters. "We have been betrayed," I said looking at the fighters. I recognized Cody and Dylan, twins in our military division. "Kane betrayed us. He has been working with the military this whole time. He attacked Lena. She's under some serum that's making her crazy." I said looking at Dylan and Cody. "Spread the word. We are currently fighting a battle for a man who betrayed his people." I said. I turned away from them trusting Cody and Dylan to save as many resistance fighters as they could.

I made my way through the fighting and finally came across Lena who was, unfortunately, fighting Elliot, of all people. "Great. Two psychopaths for the price of one." I said with a sigh. I doubled back and kicked at one of the militias disarming him with no trouble at all. I grabbed his gun and thankfully he also had on him a rapier sword.

I turned back to Elliot and Lena, I shot them both in their lower knee. Elliot went down cursing but Lena turned and stared at me with righteous fury. I slid the gun in my pocket, and put the sword up in a blocking move, just in time to block the Taser cane Lena had been using against Elliot. We parried blow for blow Lena's smile was cruel and hateful as she fought. I led her up the stairs to the balcony that overlooked the side lawn.

Outside on the balcony, it was quiet and peaceful. You could almost imagine that we weren't waging war. I led her up to the very top rail of the balcony and I fought until she backed away slightly before I jumped and climbed to the roof. I heard Lena make a snarl behind me and then I heard a scuffle as she followed me to the slanted roof.

Not waiting for her to get her balance, I kicked out at her making her drop the Taser cane. I slid the rapier behind me hooking it through one of my belt loops and punched her in the face startling her. I grabbed her arm and swung her making her fall face-first into the roof. I followed her down one leg against both of her sides turning her around and kneeing her hard in her side. She grunted and glared hatefully at me as I grabbed her head and shoved her head forcefully on the roof. "Lena?" I heard a voice shout from below.

"Up here," I said. There was a pause and I heard the person make a scuffling sound before Emily's head popped out of the edge of the roof. "Aimee?" Emily said her eyes narrowed. "Found her," I said smiling cheekily at Emily who rolled her eyes in response. "Stay there and help me lift her down," I said getting up and lifting Lena by her armpits. I carried her over to Emily who grabbed her lower back and gently leaned down taking Lena with her. I followed behind noticing that Emily had company as I did.

"Who are you, again?" I asked the boy who was one of the military soldiers that I and Emily had come across when we were looking for Lena earlier. "I'm James." He said frowning slightly as he turned away brushing Lena's hair away from her face as he checked her pulse. "You were with Westley right?" I asked. "He told me to find the three of you and meet him at the front lawn. He thinks he might know someone who can help us." I said.

Emily looked at me sharply. "The Resistance?" she said doubtfully. "The Experiments. Not all of us believed in the resistance, anyways." I reminded Emily who sighed. "The Experiments? How many of you are there?" James asked his eyes narrowing. Emily and I smiled.
