Chapter 11 - What next?

The classical seems to have separated them from the actual feelings of what is happening. Until it stopped playing, then they felt the magnitude of what is going on. Even though Larry has all medical proof of lifeless situation, he still doubted his own professional ability.

"This happened too fast, no sign of physiological stress during the trial, where did we get it wrong?" he questioned himself as he placed his two hands on the bed Robin is lying on, while still standing, giving him a bent posture.

He kept steering at him helplessly without the effrontery to make any medical declaration. The nurse leaned backwardly on the transparent glass, with her arms crossed underneath her breast. Her reddened eyes and face is as a result of her sectional cries since Robin closed his eyes the second time.

While Molly cried helplessly and bitterly on Robin's chest, she already knew he has passed on. His body temperature is cooler than that of a fish. She felt no respiratory movements. She confirmed it even when Larry has not declared it.

Presently, she cried for two reasons. Firstly, Robin's continuous statement "You sound like I'm going to die?" she cried uncontrollably because they all planned and hoped for a quick trial "Lets prove the research is worth it and go home" Robin's utterances kept occurring in her mind like a mixtape.

Secondly, she thought of what to report to her mom. This particularly made her blame herself for not convincing Robin to tell Susan about it. She realized how foolish and selfish she has been and regretted even more.

While lying on his chest, she wished she can turn back the tick-tock hands of time, but three weeks is such a huge time with numerous activities to be reversed. "This is meant to be a trial" she regretted in tears, hitting his elbow simultaneously.

As a daughter, she already knows what her mother is capable of especially when disappointed or betrayed, not to talk of when Robin's state right now is a consequence she has to bear. Molly remembered how she tried so hard to reconcile with them but instead they formed their own team against her. She already knows Susan's decision concerning Robin's case will be brutal. This made her blame herself and cry the more.

As she cried unceasingly, the veterinary doctor and the anesthetist stood stranded, looking gloomy in response to the situation on ground. As Douglas couldn't wait outside any longer he dashed into the theater to clear his confusion.

"Doctor, what's going on?" He asked in confusion.

Then Larry stood erect and removed his glasses "I'm sorry we lost him, we tried all we could to revive him but it didn't yield any result. All body physiological states were under check, where the trial went wrong…" Larry was explaining

"Shit" Douglas said regrettably, as he bent his face and placed his two hands on his waist. He didn't care to hear all that Larry had to say to complete his sentence, he already comprehended Larry doesn't know how it went wrong before he could finish his sentence.

"I'm sorry" Larry concluded.

Douglas looked up to Robin and recalled his last conversation with him in his office, three weeks ago. He blamed himself too as he stepped out of the theater weakly and slowly. As human, if it is possible to cry, he will comfortably do it. He got to the transparent glass and looked up to Robin again, shook his head and turned away. He couldn't believe it. One can conclude he is not feeling the situation, but deep down his being, he is pained.

He cursed the trait of love for animals which Molly inherited from Donald. He regretted this cloning research that took his friend's and Robin's life. He felt less of a father he is supposed to be.

As he ruminated over all this, he also thought of how to face Susan. This is a woman he has seen in a traumatized state before time. For the fact that he made he heal of her emotional trauma, weakened him to face her this time.

He remembered vividly of how she came begging to know what her children were up to. But he denied having knowledge of it. Robin's death made him regret not telling her.  He kept wandering in blames and regrets when the anesthetist spoke up

"Doctor Larry, I think we are waiting for too long"

"Yeah, we should call an ambulance to take him to the morgue" the veterinary doctor affirmed

"Yeah, do that right away" Larry said to the anesthetist as the nurse began parking her medical bag.

"I will order for the commencement of an autopsy when he gets to the hospital" Larry added as he turned to Molly.

"Molly" he called tapping her shoulder as he called "You have to pull yourself together, this isn't your fault" he said as she cried harder "You have to let go" he advised

"No" she asserted raising her reddened face with cheeks full of paths of tears

"You have to my dear, get off him and let's do the needful please" Larry pleaded.

After some minutes, of begging, she slowly kissed his forehead and stood up from the bed. Larry covered him with the theater cloth as tears rushed down her cheeks heavily.

"Yeah, Mamieu-Cara, residence 6b" the anesthetist directed over the phone.

Molly slowly walked out of the theater in tears. Douglas's unrest prior to the trial came to her mind as she saw him. She is so ashamed to face Douglas, so she didn't border to go close to him. Surprisingly, he held her shoulder and she turned. She couldn't still hold back her tears as she bent her face. Douglas lacked the right words and what actually to say. All he could do was offer her a napkin to wipe her tears and said "Its ok, Molly" she quickly hugged him tightly.

"Its all my fault" she uttered to Douglas's right ear.

"No, it's not my dear" he replied pulling her out immediately

"You have no hand in this trial's outcome" he added holding her elbows and looked straight into her eyes "All we should think of is how to relay this to Susan" he concluded

"That's my greatest fear right now" she said crying again

"It's ok" Douglas replied hugging her again

"I can't believe Robin is dead" she murmured in tears as they carried his corpse out of the theater.

"Pull yourself together my dear" Douglas said to console her.

Larry is the last to step out of the theater. Then, he walked up to them

"I'm deeply sorry for your loss" he sympathized "We did all we can" he added "I will place a call for the autopsy immediately, which will be out in twenty-four hours" he concluded as they nodded in affirmation

"Pull yourself together Molly" he said holding her shoulder "Take care" he said

"Yeah, thank you" Douglas replied as he left.
