Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 "I believe you!"

Lydia thinks that she is suppose to have everything she wants and have everything her way. I

suppose that is our fault to a certain degree. We sent her to the best schools, bought her designer

clothes. As she got older, she became more demanding.

Both of us, her mother and I grew up poor and had to worked extra hard to get a scholarship to

college. Me being part Cherokee and part black, life was very difficult for me trying to prove that I

was somebody and had a rightful place in this world. Luckily for me, my father worked as a

bartender at a country club and I met some important people who gave me financial tips.

Irene was born on a Navajo Indian Reservation, her family turned their backs on her when they

learned that she had plans to leave the Reservation. Irene's father was the chief and had made an

arranged marriage with one of the other chief's son. They were hoping to unite both pacts

together. Irene made a fool out of him when she left them in a lurch in pursuit of her dreams.

We struggled through college having to work while keeping up with our studies so we wouldn't

lose our funding. The scholarship only covered our tuition. We had to provide our own housing

and meals.

I met Irene at the school Cafeteria. I hadn't eaten in a couple of days and could no longer ignore

the hunger pangs. I only had a couple of dollars on me and needed to get something to eat. I

couldn't afford a meal so I had to settle for a side salad. Irene was working in the Cafeteria as a

cashier. She saw how much money I had and heard my stomach growling. How embarrassing!

Irene smiled at me and felt pity for me and used her discount so that I could afford a whole meal. I

fell in love at first sight! I was so grateful. I thanked her profusely and told her that "One day I am

going to be rich and you are going to be my wife." She laughed at me and said:" I believe you!"
