Chapter 45 - The Keys of Time

On the ship headed for Graiigreald, one of the crew members asked Marcus to come and see the sky. As he walked out, he gazed upon the majesty of the light, and knew Duri's sacrifice would not be in vain. His wisdom helped them escape Arstag. Now he had a job to do. It was his duty now to return to the Split. He wouldn't know what to do until he got there, but in time he believed it would be revealed to him. Within the fortnight, they landed in Lion's Point where the Order of Heroes greeted the refugees from Arstag. Marcus explained what was happening and what he needed to do. Sir Steven then interjected:

"I know of a way to get you to the Split, but you would never be allowed to return."

"If I must sacrifice my life for the people, I do so with honor."

"Honor won't do you any good in the City of the Dead," Aace added,

"How can we go to a place that doesn't exist anymore?"

"When the March returned, so did the City of the Dead. We have to go there and retrieve the Firestone and Feathered Dagger."

"That can't be a good idea."

"We need them both if we are to create the Blade of Balance."

"What is..."

Plato quickly interpreted, "Men! We do not have time for this. You must all go, now, to the City of the Dead. The March is preparing to cross the Sapphire Sea. No wind will knock them off course. You must leave now!"

The Order agreed, and Marcus, Aace, Sir Leo, and Sir Henry set off for the City of the Dead.

On their way to the City of the Dead, the expedition came across the four living creatures. They stood in respect of the magnificent creatures. And then the creatures spoke.

"We have awaited the time that the Unifier would return to us. We live to hold the Keys of Time, and now we will return to the swords we came from. Each of you will take one, and with it you will use them you will unlock the path to the Split."

The creatures then let out a bellowing roar, turning into the swords of knowledge, power, pride, and freedom. The four men each took a sword, then continued forward to the City of the Dead.

After three more days of riding and climbing up the Black Mountains, they reached the gates of the City. A dreadful silence took the expedition. Aace knew better than to believe that they were safe. They opened the gates only to be charged by the undead. Each men fought with everything they had. Marcus watched the legendary heroes fight and realized how much better they were than him. As they fought through the hoards of Undead, Aace lead the way into the chamber that housed the Feathered Dagger and Firestone. After beating back the hoard, the men got into the chamber were the Feathered Dagger and Firestone were.

"So what do we do know?" Asked Marcus.

Sir Henry then added, "According to Plato, we need to combine the Dagger and Firestone together, then use the four swords to unlock the path to the Split."

"And how do we do that?"

"I will. I am the Unifier, it's my destiny."

The men agreed and Aace grabbed the Dagger and Firestone, forcing them into each other, a flowing light emanating from it. After the light subsided, a longsword of pure light remained. The men the grabbed their swords and plunged them into the light. The swords were absorbed by the Blade of Balance, then a bright wave of light blinded them.

When they could see again, they were between the March of Chaos and Michael. Marcus then realized what he had to do. Just before Michael enacted the Split, Marcus took the Blade of Balance and thrusted it into his heart. The men let out a cry, but the sound of their voices was drowned out by the piercing sound coming from Marcus. With a nod, Marcus sent the three men back to the City of the Dead, then passed, a wave of light sweeping over the land.

While in the ship, Cromwell felt something, something he had never felt before: mortality. The March of Chaos was dying, but so was the March of Peace.

As reports came in of Marcus's death and the approaching March of Chaos, the Order of Heroes decided to fight them at sea before they made it to Lion's Point. Isaac and Sir John gathered as many builders they could find to prepare the ships for battle. After one week of preparation, the March of Chaos was a day's sail away. Having just finished the ships, the Order of Heroes set sail towards the March of Chaos.

As the two armies met on the Sapphire Sea, they immediately began to battle. The Order's cannons ripped through the transport ships the March of Chaos was using. After sixteen ships sank, Mortimer sent forth a wave of black fire that burned twenty-two of the Order's ship, including the flagship. Titus and Isaac were thrown from the ship having to be rescued by Lord John and Sir Peter. As Mortimer prepared another wave of black fire, Sir Christopher saw the thousands of barrels of the liquid fire. Taking flight on Athenix, he set his sights on the ships. With a roar, Athenix bellowed out a stream of fire, igniting the liquid fire, destroying half of the ships left. The firestorm that took out the ships killed Lord Jor, King Byrion, and Cromwell. Before Sir Christopher could get back, Hannibal threw a large claymore into Sir Christopher's chest. As he fell from Athenix, Hannibal threw another claymore, hitting Athenix in the heart. The Order then quickly turned around before the March of Chaos struck again.

When the Order made it back to Lion's Point, the expedition arrived soon after. Aace held in his hands the Blade of Balance, but was no longer illuminated. The Order called for the people to gather to tell them the current situation. As they spoke, the blade began to glow and point to a young man in the crowd. Aace asked the young man what his name was.

"My name is Aniakir. I came to Graiigreald from Arstag, the city of Helorion."

"Are you trained in the ways of the sword?"

"I was being trained before we had to flee Arstag. I know the basics."

"Then you will train with us. If the Blade of Balance is inclined to you, then you must be important."

The young Aniakir then joined the Order of Heroes, leaving with Sir Bartholomew, Lady Athena, and King Bonaparte to train. They left for Grand Capital just a week before the March of Chaos was spotted near Lion's Point.
