Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Erin's POV

I watched as the other kids walked in ;some with their parents, some without their parents. They looked really excited unlike me.

They held their parents' hands as they walked with big smiles on their faces. Watching them like that sent a pang to my heart. Even though my parents never really showed me any affection, I still loved them and now they were dead.

Since summer break was over and today was the second day of school ,some parents chose to drop off their kids who weren't in school the day before and to meet their new class teachers for the year.

Too bad Aunt Delia couldn't walk me to my class. I didn't expect her to and I wasn't surprised when she dropped me off at the entrance and asked me to find my way. It wasn't that hard since I spotted the principal's office the moment I stepped in the hallway and got my schedule and school map

From my seat at the back, I fiddled with my fingers occasionally looking up to watch the other kids troop in. Just then I saw the most beautiful boy my ten year old self had ever seen ,walk in with his parents by his side. His raven hair was messy and he had the most beautiful and lightest blue eyes I'd ever seen and they had a mischievous and playful glint in them. For some reason I felt my cheeks and the tips of my ears burning. I looked away quickly; not before I saw him smile brightly as his parents kiss the side of his head goodbye.

"welcome my lovely students " A woman with auburn hair pulled into a sophisticated bun greeted " i hope you had a wonderful summer. We have a new student joining us, let's introduce ourselves to her. Starting from you Evan " A boy with sandy blond hair stood up.

It was really hard to pay attention to all the names and I wasn't making any effort to pay attention until it got to the boy from earlier.

He introduced himself as Maddox Lykaios and that he liked football and basketball. My two favourites.

Too bad there was no chance of us being friends. Nobody ever really liked me enough to be close to me.

Finally it was my turn to introduce myself . I got up shyly and pushed my fringed, short brown hair off my forehead

"Um... I'm Erin Da Silva and I like basketball"

I hated my first name Raine, because of HIM and I stopped using it after Ma and Pa died.

From the corner of my eye I saw Nicole, the blonde who sat beside Maddox glaring at me while he smiled at me. I ignored her ; it wasn't a crime to like basketball too and gave Maddox a little smile of my own.

"Well Erin I officially welcome you to Lancaster, I'm Miss Williams and I'm going to be your fifth grade teacher. Feel at home ". I nodded at her.

At lunch break, I sat down on one if the benches outside and stared at the students eating their lunches. Lancaster was a really big school with many students.

Aunt Delia didn't bother to prepare any for me and since she was in a hurry to get me out of her hair and I forgot to take lunch money from the savings I had. She was really bad at being a guardian. My stomach growled in hunger as Mason, a brown haired boy from my class bit into his sandwich. I thought by sitting outside the cafeteria, I would be able to control my hunger since I thought people won't be eating outside the cafeteria to tempt me but boy was I wrong. It seemed lots of people enjoyed eating their lunches outside.

I had never been so hungry in that moment.

" Hey", I heard someone say from beside me. I turned to find Maddox standing beside me with a smile on his cute face and his hands behind his back. However I didn't dwell on that much since my mind was occupied with the thoughts of why he was standing here ,beside me, talking to me. Me , girl who was practically a loner and probably considered weird even though this was my first day here.

"Hey", I replied. He held out a bottle of water and a turkey wrap to me. My stomach growled even more but I remained unmoving. Staring at his face and the offered food in question. Why was he offering me his lunch. I know that I had nothing to eat that much was obvious but why was he offering his to me ?

"C'mon ", he urged, " I don't bite". I held out my hand to take it when I paused mid air. A sudden thought crossed my mind; if he was giving me his lunch, then what would he eat ?

As if he was reading my mind he provided another turkey wrap from behind him.

"My mum always prepares extra for me and my friends I guess today is your lucky day because those two idiots are not here " I laughed at that. I was almost tempted to ask who his friends were ,but I stopped myself. I took the turkey wrap with a muttered thanks and immediately bit into it. I sighed happily at how delicious it tasted.

Beside me Maddox also bit into his sandwich.

We ate in silence. Not the awkward kind but the comfortable kind.

After eating and getting rid if the trash, we still had a few minutes left before we went for the next lesson.

Maddox and I got into a conversation. We talked about the basketball and football games we thought were epic and the ones which were not. Even though I was a huge fan of basketball and football, I didn't really play but Maddox did.

Somewhere along the line , Maddox raised his hand and brought it down on my head. Now I don't know what happened but the next moment, I found myself and Maddox on the ground with me straddling him ,holding his collar tightly and telling him not to touch my hair. The teachers who were around lifted me off him. The logical part of me which had almost vanished at this moment felt bad for treating the first person who showed kindness this way but I just couldn't help it. Even though Aunt Delia couldn't be bothered with whatever happened to me, both of us had a common enemy and we had taken a lot of precautionary measures to protect ourselves. My hair was one of them. That's why I freaked out .

His parents and Aunt Delia were called. I was surprised that she even made it. Even though I had already explained that it was all my fault, the principal insisted on bringing the grown ups here.

I had my head down while we waited for them to get here . I was just to embarrassed to look at Maddox

Turns out he was just trying to pick out a leaf that had gotten stuck in my hair. I had just overreacted for no reason at all

I walked briskly trying to find the messy mop of hair I had become familiar with . It had been a couple of days since that incident. That day when I got home, Aunt Delia scolded me and refused to give me dinner. She told me to apologize to Maddox and not to mess with the rich kids at school. Not that I wasn't planning to apologize because I was. I tried so many times to approach him the days after, but I always chickened out. But today I was going to. School had ended a few minutes ago and I had to be fast if I wanted to catch up with him . I finally spotted him at the end of the hallway putting his books in his locker. I didn't the two boys who I found out were his friends; the ones he mentioned the day he offered me his lunch.

"Hey " I said from behind him . He turned.

Okay Erin you can do this.

I held out the little box to him.

On my way to school today , I passed by a cute cupcake shop that was a few blocks away from my house and bought a little peace offering. I wasn't sure if he was going to accept it but I had to try at least

"I'm really sorry for the way I behaved the other day. Forgive me ?"

He stared at me a little more and finally took the package from me. He smiled at the box.

"It's really no problem and I forgave you the minute it happened."

" Oh Thank God"

"Yeah and thanks for this cupcake" he said

" So...uh.. friends ?" I offered.

"Friends"
