Chapter 4 - FAMILY (Part 2)

~NILMANI P.O.V~

THE NEXT DAY (7:45am)

I think I've enough time, classes won't start in about the next two hours. I know it was a bit too early for me to be walking around the science section of the campus but I got a text from Mr. Cheng, another science professor stating he will be covering for Mrs. Collins just for today, she has this meeting with the ministry of education.

I huffed once reaching her office, knocking not once but twice then after a while I knocked another time. In about two minutes the door to her office opened. She was pleasantly dressed well for once in a grey suit and all. Her hair was in her signature ponytail. "The reports," I handed them over to her. She smiled, placing them in the drawers, going back to what she was doing.

"The answer is no, I admire your hard work here but you're slacking off gets on my nerves." Fair enough.

"I'll take that as a compliment," I placed both hands in my pockets. I'll have to admit she's one of the few adults that can handle my stubbornness and crappy and unapproachable behavior. Kind of reminds me of Jessi.

"Good luck with the meeting," I said before leaving. "Don't get into any more fights with the freshmen," She scolded while I closed the door behind me. That's a promise I won't keep, these new freshmen are acting all high and mighty just for attention and that's what I've given them. The attention they deserve is not needed.

*Phone Ringing*

I stop in my tracks to check on whose calling. "Nila," I answered the call while walking towards my car which was parked in the parking lot to get my stuff.

"Can you please do mom this one favor Nilmani," She begs with her softly pleading tone. Jessi put her up to this, of course, she would drag Nila into this knowing I can't say no. I unlocked the car door grabbing my bag and laptop.

"Why? You don't even know the guy."

"No, but, I wasn't born the day you met him and mom showed me the letters you usually write so my curiosity grew from there," The excitement was starting to build up in her tone. Still, I have to see those letters for myself, leaning against the car trying to bring my thoughts to a halt but my curiosity also was growing.

"Ok whatever if you haven't left for school yet tell Jessi I'll give in to the favor," I sighed, glancing up and seeing that the gang wasn't too far away approaching.

"Oh finally took you long enough, mom you hear that he said yes," The brat shouts in my ear causing me to flinch a bit in surprise.

"Wait before I go, do you have a girlfriend?" I raised my eyebrow at her sudden question.

"No," I answered.

There was an awkward pause. "Then what about a boyfriend?" Holy shit I laughed, running my hands through my hair. She's gonna drive me crazy with her sudden question about my personal life. "Nila the answer is no," She then mumbled something before hanging up.

"Who was that?" Ally asked, stopping in front of me with a sleepy Reggie at the back and Elly who was holding what looked to be Starbucks while texting on her phone.

"My sister, she has this weird behavior about her, where she reads comics/books about something called boys love or BL then begins questioning me if I have a girlfriend then switch it to boyfriend." I let them know what was going on, grabbing a donut from Elly who was amused with my response.

If I said I had a girlfriend she won't talk to me for weeks like the last time. Couldn't bear to let my sister not talk to me just because I might have a girlfriend.

Still, the thought of her not speaking to me simply of having a girlfriend is crazy and stupid. I need to speak to her about this when I'm not busy.

****************************

I sometimes forget how much Mr. Rule's mouth won't shut up when he's lecturing. The guy's just talking and talking not even stopping to take a breath, damn why doesn't he quit his job and become a rapper instead?

"Nilmani tells me five types of doctors," I snap my head at him, really wondering if it's me he's asking that simple question too. He nods, crossing his legs and waiting.

"Cardiologist, Gastroenterologist, Ophthalmologist, Anesthesiologist, and lastly Plastic Surgeons." I yawned while most people were writing down what I said. Leaning back in my seat I rolled my eyes as he gave me a stern look.

"What? You asked for five types, you get five types," I shrugged.

"I was talking about the types we discussed."

"Well I'm a guy of high expectations so my answers are gonna be high," I explained. A few chuckles were heard here and there before he cleared his throat. "Your one sly fox," Miley, the silent type who people never noticed in class, whispered from behind me.

"Get back to work, this isn't the place for mockery." Mr. Rule demanded.

After spending around four hours in classes, I rushed out of the building jumped in my car, and headed for home. I shoot a text to the guys informing them not to wait up for me. I drove out of the campus showing security my ID then I was on my way.

The traffic wasn't so bad considering what time it is, driving past Nila high school it was already over seeing as kids were hanging around or going home. She must be home by now.

Driving through the neighborhood a sense of familiarity started to find its way back through my memories. I used to sneak out of the house all the time at dark with a couple of gangsters back in the day. I think I was around the age of thirteen at the time. As a teen, they would teach me how to fight even how to handle myself in the streets. To me, they were good people, kind of crazy but still they consider everyone as a family even me who wasn't a part of the gang.

They are the ones that have given me this bad-boy image.

"Nilmani!" Nila jumped on me at the same time I walked through the door. "It's been years," She buried her face into my shirt.

"It's not like I died and came back, sis. By the way where's Julie?" She chuckled at my comment. Julie is the helper around the house, come to think of it not much has changed here except for its size.

"She's at the back watering the garden," Nila dragged me around skipping along the way feeling all hyper. "Has this place gotten bigger?" I asked not to recognize most parts of the house.

"Yep mom added a few rooms and a huge library," We got to the garden to see Julie handling the flowers, she's been working here since the divorce helping me to cope with it and all.

I stood there watching her for a few seconds before clearing my throat.

"Mani it's been so long," She gasped rushing over to crush me in one of her bear hugs. "Good to be back," I told her, struggling to breathe.

We talked for an hour then as the clock struck 4 pm, I went to take a quick shower so I could be at the airport when the guest arrived.

After a few mins, I got downstairs to see Nila laying on the couch scrolling through Netflix, and Julie was in the kitchen cooking dinner. I make myself present by knocking on the table.

"So I'm heading out, I might be back before Jessi gets here which is 9:30 pm or later depending on the traffic."

"Hurry and get back so I can see the guest," Nila shouts from the living room. Going to my car I saw a text from Jessi saying that Micah will be surrounded by guards so I should approach calmly.

I scoffed, she said as if he's the president's son or something.
