A slight breeze blowing in my face wakes me up. I open one eye just to check the time on my alarm clock, 6:42 a.m. Well looks like since I have to get up in 18 minuets anyways I should probably crawl out of bed and start my day. Today is my first day of college and I couldn't be anymore nervous. It's also the first year that my mom and dad won't be here to wave me off.
Over the summer my family and I took a trip to the beach, sadly on our way home a drunk driver his us head on. The doctor said it was a miracle that I survived. Although at the time I didn't feel like living, I should have died with them. Sadly I didn't; now I'm left here in life all alone, I have no friends or any other relatives that I know about. My parents had me in their will, so when they died they're house was left to me. Without that I doubt that I would have been able to survive, I merely have a part time job at a local diner close to our home. I definitely couldn't afford all of the bills it takes to rent.
I grab two towels and my wash cloth and head towards the bathroom. The scent of my lavender body wash and shampoo calms me and eases my nerves. After my shower I grab my lavender body lotion and smother myself in it. I settle on black ripped jeans, a white sweater, and my brown ankle boots. After I'm dressed I throw my hair up in a neat but slightly messy bun, to add some effects I pull some strands of my hair out to frame my face. I insert my black tongue ring and now I feel complete.
I head downstairs and grab my black backpack from the table then make my way out the door. After I lock the door I throw my ear buds in and set my playlist to shuffle. After walking what seems like forever and half a playlist later I finally arrive.
"Westbrook Medical School." I read the sign out loud in front of the massive building.
"It's a really nice school ya know." I jump startled to hear someone near me. I turn around to see the most beautiful girl I've ever seen, she's tall...way taller than me. She has waist long wavy brown hair with natural blonde highlights. Her high prominent cheek bones only add to her perfectly sculpted face, she has a cute pointed nose. Her dark green eyes...I feel like they can see right through me.
"You must be new here, I'm Brinley; but most people just call me Brin." She holds her hand out for me to shake. I immediately take her hand in mine. For a split second I swear her eyes turn completely white. Shocked from what I swear I see, I let go of her hand and take a step back. Clearing my throat...
"Hi, and yeah I am new here. It's my first day of my first year. I'm Selene by the way."
"That's a beautiful name, it suits you really well." I feel my cheeks heat up from her compliment.
"Thank you, you also have a pretty name." I internally face palm myself. This is why I don't have any friends. Brin just laughs at me.
"I can tell we're going to be good friends." She says through her laughs.
"Well you would be my first." I half chuckle at my statement. As if she just won the lottery her face lit up.
"Well I would be honored to be your very first friend, and as the good friend I am I shall walk you to your first class."
"Okay sounds good to me." We stand there for a minuet or so in silence until Brin busts out laughing again.
"Well if you want me to walk you to your first class I have to know what it is first."
"Oh yeah, Anatomy." I reply to her slightly embarrassed.
"That's not too far and my class is right around the corner, I can pick you up after and we can have lunch together." Together we walk to my first class.
"So how old are you Selene?"
"I'm 17."
"And you're in college?"
"Well I skipped a grade or two."
"Oh okay, makes sense. So pointing out the obvious...sounds like you're pretty smart."
"Yeah I guess you could say that."
"How long have you lived in Westbrook?" I've never heard someone so eager to learn about me before.
"A couple of years, my parents bought a house not too far from here."
"Well they must be really proud of you."
"Yeah..."
"Okay well we're here." She turns around and puts her hands on my shoulders. "I will be back to get you right after class...so don't go anywhere. We're having lunch together."
"Okay sounds good to me." Brin waves me goodbye before walking away to her class. Well my first day so far isn't bad, but let's not jinx it.
I walk in and take a seat at one of the empty chairs. I couldn't help but notice everyone is staring at me, not in a bad way. Almost out of curiosity. I guess that's what happens when you're the new girl. Not too long after I take my seat the professor walks in and class officially starts.
An hour and a half later class ended, and let me tell you that it felt way longer than that. As I exited the class I stood outside the door waiting for Brin. About five minuets later I see Brin walking up to me with a smile that could light the world up.
"How was your first class?" She asked me too enthusiastically.
"Way too long in my opinion, but other than that it was okay. So where are we going for lunch?"
"Well we're gonna meet up with some of my friends at a pizza shop around the corner, come on lets go!" With that she grabbed my hand and forcefully pulled me out of the school with her.
Once we entered the pizza shop a group of two insanely hot men and a girl waved us over. Brin started pulling me along with her but anxiety got the best of me and I kind of pulled back.
"What's wrong Selene?" Brin asked me with concern written all over her face.
"What if your friends don't like me?"
"They will love you! Don't worry about it I swear." She replied to me as she pulled me towards the table once again.
"Okay guys, this is Selene. Selene this is my ma- I mean boyfriend Ash, his best friend Collin, and his girlfriend Emma." Brin introduced us all. I reached my hand out to shake their hands, Ash was extremely handsome with short black hair and brown eyes. I then shook hands with Collin who was also extremely good looking but with blonde hair and blue eyes. Finally I shook hands with Emma, she had fiery red hair and bright blue eyes just like her boyfriend.
"Hi I'm Selene, it's nice to meet you guys." I spoke softly suddenly feeling shy.
"It's nice to meet you too, Brin don't have too many friends so this is very exciting for us." Ash was the first one to speak earning him a punch in the arm from Brin.
"Well I don't know about you guys but I'm starving, so can you take your seats now so we can order. I'm literally dying for some meat lovers pizza." Collin said while slapping his stomach.
"Yeah yeah, he acts like he's starving when in reality we were just at a donut shop." Emma giggled out.
Brin and I took our seats and everyone finally ordered their food and was having polite conversation.
"So Selene." Emma started, "This is your first year of college right?" I just nodded my head in response. "How old are you?"
"I'm 17, but I turn 18 in three days."
Everyone besides Brin looked at me as if I have grown three heads.
"I may have skipped a grade or two." I added.
"So where do you guys live?" I decided to switch the topic off of me.
"We live about an hour away in a private community." Brin answered for me while the rest just nodded in agreement. "Honestly if you would like this weekend, you can come over and we can study together." Brin asked very enthusiastically. As soon as the words left her mouth all of her friends mouths hung open as they looked at her. Almost shocked that she would even invite me over. I didn't want to be mean to her so…"Yeah I would love to."
"Okay great, we have to get going but I'll pick you up Friday around noon in the same place we first met. Okay?"
"Yeah that sounds good to me, I guess I will see you then." I replied back second guessing my decision.
"Well it was nice meeting you Selene, we'll be seeing you this weekend then I take it?" Emma spoke to me as she and Collin stood up to leave. Let me tell you…when I thought Brin was tall the rest are more like giants compared to me.
"Yeah definitely." I nodded back to her.
"Bye!" They all said at once while I just waved. Okay not a bad first day, I mean I made a couple of new friends so what's the worst that can happen this year.
I quickly finished my iced tea and stood up to head back home, I don't have another class until Wednesday so I may as well go for a hike. I popped my earbuds back in and started back home.
Once I was home I stripped myself from my school clothes and put on proper attire for a hike, a black tank top with a black jacket over top and leggings with my black Nikes. Once I was satisfied I grabbed my car keys and headed out the door.
I rarely drive but considering the hiking spot is about an hour away I definitely can't walk to it, my mom and I used to go here all the time for nature walks. My mother was obsessed with bird watching. Throwing on my Bluetooth I jammed out to loud music while I made my drive.
For some odd reason I'm feeling anxious and excited about this, probably for the simple fact I haven't been here since my mom died. Pulling off at my spot I grab my pocket knife for protection and backpack full of granola bars and water bottles. I then set out for my hike.
