Not one of the Handel's were allowed inside Cora's ward since the medical team and police got the conclusion that the Handel family would further agitate the patient, something that they could not afford.
When Cora woke up her words were:
- "Why is it so bright? Is this how the hell is supposed to look? Wait!! Am I in heaven???"
The youngest nurse smiled at her and touched her hand. Cora snapped her eyes open and started to cry:
- "That can't be. Am I alive? No... No..." crying her heart out Cora stares at the young nurse "Miss please, I beg you please let me die, please kill me, I really can't... they will end me and I just can't... I have no one.. and my baby... I'm a murderer I must die please..." Cora kept trying to sit and move her arms but the pain was unbearable and she was far to weak.
The nurse afraid that the girl would reopen her wounds pressed the emergency button to summon a doctor.
They tied Cora on the bed but that alone couldn't stop the woman from begging for death. Her cries were heart wrecking and no one could imagine on how much pain she felt.
The young nurse guessed that letting her know that her baby survived would help, yet, the woman became even more inconsolable. At last they gave her a light sedative for her to calm or else she would end up hurting herself and the child even more.
The medical team couldn't stop but think how could a family team up to bully a 6 month pregnant woman.
Theodore got to the hospital, feeling anxious without knowing why he was called. As soon as Mr. Handel saw him he delivered a punch on his left cheek, the first time he had ever laid a hand at his son.
- "You just couldn't hold your dick on your pants, could you?" Shouted Mr. Handel.
"Couldn't you wait for the child to be born? Or at least to pretend to like Cora? Just a little bit of affection, it would have killed you to try?"
Mr. Handel screams so loud that his spit was all over Theodore's face.
"Of course it wouldn't, but now look what you've done. She might be dead, our grandson might be dead and it's all your fault." Mr. Handel advances to give Theodore a kick but Mrs. Handel holds him back.
Theodore looks at his mother, her tears unstopping and it broke him apart. He couldn't understand what was happening but he knew better and didn't try to argue.
- "She attempted suicide Theodore" his mother said. "Your wife and your son almost died today Theodore" at this she starts to shake. "Do you even care Theodore? Are you even a human?"
Theodore honestly couldn't care less if the woman died or lived but the deal with his son made him burn in fury. That scheming crazy bitch tried to kill his son.
- "Is he.."
- "THEY are alive Theodore" his mother cuts in downhearted. He's not worried about Cora and she knows it. Deep within her heart she knows that she isn't either, none of them care. Her thoughts were interrupted by doctors rushing to the ward. When the door is open they all can hear the cry
- "PLEASE, PLEASE I BEG YOU I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE PLEASE LET ME DIE PLE.." and the door was shut.
Silence filled the corridor.
...
Many nurses had posted about the heart breaking story on the internet and the press tried to buzz in. The state moved a female layer for Cora, she had a 24/7 nurse and a female police officer by her side. All of them pitied the woman. The world pitied Cora.
The family was allowed to enter the ward on Cora's second day of hospitalization. When they finally came in Cora was full of smiles but when Theodore entered she had a shock. She was so scared that her monitors went all the way up and she convulsed for 3 minutes. The doctor and nurses were utterly distressed, the officer glared at the family and the layer asked them to withdraw.
Once Cora regained consciousness she met a female psychiatrist. This doctor suspects of post-traumatic stress disorder and light androphobia ( ~fear of men). That's all based on sheer observation and it's pretty recent so she won't call it a diagnosis, she's just suspecting.
The obstetrician recommended Cora to stay in the hospital for the rest of her pregnancy. She was very unstable and one will never know when an accident might take place. Cora looked the doctor in the eye and said
- "I'm sorry doctor, that won't be possible, I don't have money, nor do I have a family to help, I would really appreciate if you all could just let me go" said the smiling woman. Always with a smile, but that smile was not reaching her eyes.
Cora missed Theodore, on her nightmares she never gets to see his face and for that she misses him dearly.
On the meanwhile the Handel family was torn apart. Mr. Handel hates his son's guts, the family name on the news as the heartless family that drove a pregnant woman to suicide, he lost all his face.
Ms. Handel is depressed, the chances of her grandson surviving are minimal and Cora can't even see them without passing out, she doubts she will ever be able to hold her grandson.
Theodore has been having nightmares about his unborn son, he still hates the woman for taking away his freedom and for destroying his relationship with his parents, but now he's eager to se his baby boy.
...
A month later was when the Handel family was allowed to visit Cora again. It was her 21th birthday, so the medical team thought it might be good for her and the child. The thing is... The Handel's didn't know it was her birthday, they arrived empty handed and no congratulations were given.
Cora smiled all the time, she held no hope of them remembering her birthday. She lost her family 5 years ago but has actually been 10 years since anyone celebrated her birthday. She wasn't surprised. The nurses and doctors knew it just because they've seen her files and they wanted to celebrate, yet she pleaded with them to not alarm the Handel family. If they can't remember let them be, she didn't want them embarrassed. Theodore would hate her more if she imposed on them. She doesn't need money, she wants love, she needs it. And even if she has to throw this child away she will have it.
During the visit Theodore did not open his mouth even once. He did glare at her trying to convey his anger and failing.
Cora got depressed.
One of the nurses whispered to the psychiatrist
- "He really forgot about his pregnant wife's birthday, what an awful man" said the nurse a little to loud in the quiet ward. Everyone listened. Everyone.
They already didn't know what to say and now things got worst. Cora was crying, her lawyer was barely keeping her ground for she knew how in love the woman was. They've talked. Cora had kept the tissue Theodore once blew his nose on. She could recite all of his allergies and knew by heart his preferences. At the first week, even though she couldn't stand the sight of him, she cried his name every night. She started to draw portraits of him and she asked them "why won't you love me?" every time she thought no one was listening.
The lawyer, Daisy, was from the countryside. She was always looked down upon because of that. She was assigned to Cora exactly because she lacked clients, she was a cheap lawyer. She traveled all the way here to meet this woman and everyone around her got the same impression, she doesn't know the meaning of love and to make up for it, she created her own. She is sick. She's probably mad. Right now she only sees one person and that person couldn't care less about her.
Daisy just can't sit still knowing how pitiful this is. And for her the one in worst condition is the girl in Cora's womb. It's a girl. Her mother doesn't want her and as soon as this heartless family finds out about her gender she will be alone.
That's one of the last meetings of this broken family. I can see the joy already ! ! !
