Beep beep beep beep, the alarm clock went off. Rivin stirred in his sleep then cracked one eye.
"Ugh... It's morning already?" He thought sleepily.
He slapped at the clock, turning it off. Rivin attempted to open both eyes, but the bright morning sun was too harsh on his eyes which hadn't adjusted to the daylight yet. He quickly shut them again.
"Screw it, im going back to sleep."
He sighed and rolled over, wiggling down into the nice, warm covers. He had just started to doze off when suddenly, the covers were pulled back and the frigid air enveloped his muscular body.
"Ugh... No... Bad.. cold..." He moaned, flailing his beefy arms around, blindly searching for the covers.
"Come on, Rivin, wake up! It's our birthday! We're finally eighteen!" Aki shrieked joyfully. She pulled the covers completely off the bed, then proceeded to yank the curtains open.
"Wah... I don't wanna!" Rivin wailed.
"Tough shit," Aki replied, "get your ass out of that bed right now!"
Aki isn't the bossy type, so when she gives a command your better off if you listen. Rivin groaned, then rolled off the bed and hit the floor with a thump.
"There...happy now?" He grumbled.
"Perfectly!" She replied happily.
Rivin couldn't help but smile. He couldn't remember a time when Aki wasn't smiling. She was naturally a happy person.
All of the sudden, Rivin's phone rang. He scrambled to get it before it stopped ringing. He picked it up and glanced at the called ID. It was Catriona, Rivin's childhood best friend and crush. He really loved her but never had the balls to confess to her, but it wouldn't really do any good, but we'll get into that later.
"Yo, Cat!"
"Happy Birthday!" Chimed a soft voice with a beautiful Spanish accent.
Later
"Can you believe we're finally eighteen?" Rivin exclaimed.
"I know," Aki replied. " It seems surreal."
"SHIT!" Rivin shouted, checking his watch. " WE'RE LATE FOR THE CEREMONY!"
They ran in opposite directions to get ready. They arrived at the ceremony with no time to spare, completely out of breath.
Suddenly, a tiny woman appeared almost out of nowhere and squeaked, "Hurry up you two, the ceremony's about to start!"
The twins took off in a dead spring towards the large stage, where they would receive their pendants.
Twenty minutes later
The twins walked off the stage with heart shaped pendants around their necks. They were ecstatic. They were finally eighteen and finally had their pendants. The twins threw a huge party once they got home and invited every eighteen year old they knew, in hopes that their 'soulmate' would be there. Some people get lucky and their 'soulmate' is someone they already know. The even luckier people are already in love with the person that turns out to be their 'soulmate'. But not everyone gets that lucky, now do they?
These pendants were made by the government, and special designed for each person. Every person in Lavatera receives one on their eighteenth birthday. When the wearer of the pendant is close to the person that the government decided was their 'soulmate', the pendants of both parties begins to glow. Most people are happy when this happens because they end up falling in love with that person.
One hour later
The party is in full swing and neither twin has found their 'soulmate' yet.
Rivin was waiting for Catriona to show up. Aki, on the other hand, was in another room and everyone with a pendant was lining up, in hopes that she is their 'soulmate'.
Just then, the front door opened and Catriona walked in. Rivin jumped up and ran over to her and wrapped his arms around her. He pulled back and the both glanced at their pendants. Rivin's wasn't glowing. He glanced at Catriona's. It wasn't glowing neither. Visibly hurt, Rivin released Catriona and stared at the floor. How could this happen? He was sure she was going to be his 'soulmate'. He loved her. Catriona could see the hurt and disappointment on Rivin's face. Truth be told, she felt the same way he did. She loved him with all her heart. It took everything inside her to refrain from crying right then and there.
Suddenly, everyone started clapping. Rivin and Catriona turned to see what was going on, they wished they hadn't. They saw two people standing in the middle of the living room in a tight embrace, their lips interlocked. When they pulled back, their pendants were glowing brightly. The happy couple turned and hurried out the front door, hand in hand.
Rivin turned back towards Catriona. The second he saw her face, which was now covered with tears, she turned and ran out the door. Rivin couldn't take it anymore. He, too, turned and ran. He fled upstairs to his room, he slammed the door. He jumped into his bed, and finally, the tears came. Streaming down his face in salty little lines. Soon, his entire face was numb, but he didn't care. He ended up crying himself to sleep. He was unaware that just a couple miles away, Catriona was asleep in her bed, the tears still wet on her face.
Two years later
The twins were out on a walk when suddenly, Aki screamed causing Rivin to jump.
"WHAT'S WRONG!?!"
"MY PENDANT!!"
Rivin looked at her pendant, and sure enough, it was glowing. She looked around, and across the street was someone who's pendant was also glowing. They started running towards each other. But as soon as they saw the other person's face, the both stopped short. They knew each other. This guy made Aki's life a living hell all throughout school.
There was no way that Dante Soien was Aki's soulmate. It wasn't possible, was it?
Rivin was so pissed. He walked in between them and shouted, "Oh, hell nah!" He turned towards Dante. "You might as well leave right now. You ain't touching my sister, I dont give two shits what you say!"
Dante stared at him for a second and rolled his eyes. He pivoted on his heel and strutted off.
Aki grabbed her pendant and tore it from her neck. She glared at it, then threw it to the ground. It cracked on impact but that wasn't good enough. She stomped on it until it stopped glowing all together, a dull heart.
Dante was walking down the street, when his pendant went dull.
"What the hell did she do?!?"
He turned and ran back down the street. He couldn't believe what he saw. Aki and her brother was nowhere in sight but her pendant sure was. Right where she left it, shattered. He knew exactly what to do. He picked up the pendant and hurried off. A little more than a hour later, Dante walked out of a government building with a twisted smirk on his face. He knew exactly what happened to someone who defied the government, and the was what was going to happen to his so-called 'soulmate'.
